Richard Floyd Sr.
LAKE WALES, FLA. - Richard M. Floyd Sr., 101, 512 11th St. South, died Saturday, May 31, 1997, in Grove Center Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for three years.
Born Dec. 20, 1895, in Brunswick County, Va., he was a son of Robert Samuel Floyd and Lucy Rebecca Shell Floyd.
He was married
to Lucille Edwards Floyd, who died Oct. 29, 1954. In 1955, he was married
to Johnsie Edwards Wynn, who died July 29, 1985.
For over 80 years, he was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church, where he had served as secretary of the Sunday school and on the administrative board until moving to Roanoke, Va.
While living in Danville, Va., he was in the grocery business and later worked for Wilson & Co. until 1943. In 1944, he was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the meat grading service. He continued this job until his retirement in 1964, when he moved to Nalcrest in Lake Wales.
During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps with a contingent of men from Danville.
Survivors include two sons, Richard M. Floyd Jr. and Robert K. Floyd, both of Danville; a stepdaughter, Johnsie Wynn Banks of Las Vegas; a sister, Ola Floyd Duke of Murfreesboro, N.C.; a brother, George Floyd of Emporia, Va.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sons, Richard M. Floyd Jr., 166 Naples St., Danville, and Robert K. Floyd, 255 Rambler Drive, Danville.

Winnie Graves
BALTIMORE - Winnie Deshazo Hatchett Graves, formerly of Yanceyville, N.C., died Saturday, May 31, 1997.
Born April 15, 1908, in Person County, N.C., she was a daughter of Charles Frank Deshazo and Melvinia Standfield Deshazo.
She was a member of Pearson Chapel AME Church.
Prior to her retirement, she was a school teacher in the Caswell County School System.
Survivors include a son, Melvin Hatchett of Baltimore; a brother, Willie Deshazo of Baltimore; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Pearson Chapel AME Church by the Rev. George Turner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed 2-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville.
Alice Hamm
Alice Juanita Hamm, 70, 883 Lee St., died Friday, May 30, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was a daughter of Charlie Beck and Annie Adams.
She was married
to Julius Hamm Sr., who predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Southern Processing Inc.
She was also a member of New Mine Creek Progressive Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Carter of Blairs and Vera Davis of Danville; three sons, Julius Hamm Jr. of Atlanta, and Tommie Hamm and George Hamm, both of Danville; a brother, Edward Beck of Jesup, Md.; three sisters, Lassie Fitzgerald and Annie Deshazor, both of Danville, and Louise Beck of Blairs; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from New Mine Creek Progressive Primitive Baptist Church. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Robert Royal
Robert Frazier Royal, 304 Randolph St., died Tuesday, June 3, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 4, 1921, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was a son of Omer E. Royal and Lillian Burgess Royal.
He was married
to Barbara Alice Royal, who survives.
He had lived in Danville since 1994 and was a former resident of New York and Oradell, N.J.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
From 1947 until 1954, he was a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was chief executive officer of Royal-Schutt International (an international industrial securities consulting firm) from 1972 until 1991.
He then owned and operated Robert F. Royal and Associates Inc. until 1994. He was also co-author of The Gentle Art of Interviewing and Interrogation.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hackensack, N.J.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, the Rev. Robert C. Royal of Callands; a daughter, Carol Ann Royal of New Milford, N.J.; a brother, Richard C. Royal of Auburn Hills, Mich.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Liberty Baptist Church in Callands by the Rev. Linwood Daniel. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where full military honors will be given by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Liberty Baptist Church, and other times at the residence of his son, 296 Late Road, Callands.

Dorothy Sparks
Dorothy Lewis Sparks, 68, 154 Dunmore Ave., died Tuesday, June 3, 1997, in her daughter's residence, 9200 Chatham Grove Lane, Richmond.
Born Dec. 5, 1928, in Danville, she was a daughter of William E. Lewis Sr. and Margaret Butts Lewis.
She was married
to Odell Thomas Sparks Sr., who predeceased her.
She spent her entire life in Danville, where she worked at Disston Inc. until her retirement.
She attended Riverview Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Sparks Butler of Richmond; two sons, Odell Thomas Sparks and Emmett H. "Chuck" Sparks, both of Danville; a brother, Emmett Lewis of Danville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Donald Eugene Sparks.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Riverview Baptist Church by the Rev. Duane Blevins. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

David Wilkerson
David Richard Wilkerson, age 74, of 33 Elizabeth St., died Wednesday afternoon, June 4, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center, following a decline in health since 1968.
Born May 1, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, Mr. Wilkerson was a son of the late James Walter Wilkerson and Alice Newton Wilkerson.
Mr. Wilkerson was predeceased by his wife, Frances Keaton Wilkerson; an infant daughter; his stepmother, Mary Wilkerson; and three brothers, Harry Wilkerson, Elam Wilkerson and Willie Lee Wilkerson.
Mr. Wilkerson spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked as a well driller for Jesse Mobley Well Drilling for 15 years, retiring on disability at the age of 55.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, James Ray Wilkerson and daughter-in-law, Sandra Yeatts Wilkerson, both of Dry Fork; two brothers, William Wallace "Bill" Wilkerson and Thomas "Tom" Wilkerson, both of Danville; two stepsisters, Christine Hammock and Sarah Dix, both of Danville; and two stepbrothers, Sonny Moore and Cecil Wilkerson, both of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Lester Gayton. Interment
will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Eddie Bethel Sr.
Eddie Alexander Bethel Sr., 50, 666 Lee St., died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997, in his residence.
Born Sept. 16, 1946, in Danville, he was a son of Lucille Fuller and Thurman Bethel.
He was married
to Annie C. Bethel.
He spent most of his life in Danville. He was employed by Perkins Fountain prior to becoming ill.
Survivors include two sons, Anthony Warner and Eddie Bethel Jr., both of Danville; two daughters, Helena Bethel and Narlene Johnson, both of Danville; two brothers, Herman Bethel of Danville and Sherman Bethel of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Geraldine Spinner of Danville and Thelma Bell of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

The funeral for Ruben Bernard "R.B." Carter, 63, 433 Lansbury Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Mount Olivet United Methodist Church by the Rev. Wayne Crews and the Rev. Henry Taylor. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325.
He died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following a one-week stay in the hospital.
Born Nov. 6, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Frank Carter and Gillie Bernard Carter.
On July 12, 1957, he was married
to Bessie Abbott Carter, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Danville. Prior to his retirement in 1983, he was employed by Dan River Mills in the carpenter shop.
He was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, where he had served as past administrative board chairman, a former choir member, and was member of the Friendship Sunday school class.
He formerly served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of American Legion Post No. 325.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sisters, Mary Carter Haley of Danville, Ann Carter Derby of Atlantic, and Joyce Carter Melvin of Newport News.
He was predeceased by a brother, William F. "Bill" Carter.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a sister, 3457 Franklin Turnpike.

Vona Henderson
A graveside service for Vona Elizabeth Henderson, 80, formerly of 52 Schoolfield Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Floral Hills Memory Garden by the Rev. J. Richard Markham.
She died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997, at 314 Edgewood Drive.
Born Jan. 15, 1917, in Danville, she was a daughter of Addison B. Henderson and Ola Goble Henderson.
She spent her entire life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Mills for 40 years in the spinning room. She retired at age 62.
She was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church, Dan River Retired Workers Club, Wayanette Council No. 22, and the Schoolfield Rebecca Lodge No. 38.
Survivors include a daughter, Diana Henderson Raines of Danville; a son, Eugene Henderson of Danville; three brothers, Clyde Henderson and Earl N. Henderson, both of Danville, and Donald Wayne Henderson of Martinsville; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 22 Selma Avenue.
