J. Landreth Shotwell
LONG ISLAND - James Landreth Shotwell, 80, of 1704 Wyatts Road, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 1997, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Dec. 25, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Jim Clay Shotwell and Addie Waller Shotwell.
He was a retired farmer and worked with tobacco warehouses for more than 45 years.
He was a member of Straightstone Baptist Church, and a member of Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Hutcherson Shotwell of the residence; two sons, James Phillip Shotwell and John Clay Shotwell both of Long Island; one brother, Rob Shotwell of Long Island; two sisters, Agathy Reynolds of Hurt, and Ruth Stemock of Los Angeles; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Straightstone Baptist Church by the Rev. Elton McDowell. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Elmo Haskins
CHATHAM - Millard Elmo Haskins, 74, 7253 Strawberry Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, in the Stratford House, following nine years of declining health.
Born July 15, 1922, in Climax, he was a son of Millard Haskins and Ellen Hammock Haskins.
He was married
to Elice Frances Davis Haskins, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Whitmell and was a retired farmer and carpenter. He had been a resident of the Stratford House since Dec. 5.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include a son, John A. Haskins of Chatham; a daughter, Phyllis H. Adkins of Chatham; three brothers, Raymond Haskins of Danville, Clinton Haskins of Chatham and Garnett Haskins of Cascade; four sisters, Thelma H. Davis and Mary Alice H. Phelps, both of Danville, Lillian H. Oakes of Blairs and Vera H. Oakes of Yanceyville, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Oakes Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Carty. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 12797 Franklin Turnpike, Chatham.

Mildred Hudson
ALTON - Mildred Perkins Hudson, 72, Route 2, Box 264, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, in Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, N.C.
Born July 22, 1924, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of William Thomas Perkins and Mary P. Perkins.
She was married
to William Frank Hudson Jr., who predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a part-time post mistress by the Milton Post Office. She was also a member of Ephesus Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Anita H. Williams of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister, Lucille Barker of Danville; a brother, Maynard Perkins of New Mexico; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Ephesus Baptist Church by the Rev. Leonard Watlington. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home of South Boston.
Oscar Owen
GRETNA - Oscar Ray Owen, 68, 5408 Grassland Drive, Sandy Level, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born April 14, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charlie Owen and Mary Watson Owen.
He was a retired farmer.
He is survived by a son, Oscar Aaron Owen of Graham, N.C.; a daughter, Gloria Owen Haley of Chatham; two sisters, Louise Doss of Sandy Level and Toy Doss of Hurt; his former wife, Christine Swain of Pittsville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. today in the Watson Family cemetery by the Rev. Joe Gravley.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 10241 Callands Road, Chatham.

H. Steve Richardson
H. Steve Richardson, 44, 1707 North Main St., died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, in his residence.
Born Aug. 20, 1952, in Danville, he was a son of Berkley Lee Richardson and Louise Wallace Richardson, who survive.
He attended Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. He was employed by Dibrell Brothers for 16 years. He also coached the Danville Little League.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include two sons, H. Steve Richardson Jr. and Brian Lee Richardson, both of the residence; and two brothers, Berkley Richardson Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Billy Richardson of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lee D. Ellison and the Rev. Steve Carlton. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Chester Gregory Sr.
HURT - Chester Clay Gregory Sr., 68, 633 Clover Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 14, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Harry and Gladys Simpson Gregory.
He was of the Baptist faith. Prior to his illness, he was employed by John Robertson Lumber Co.
Survivors include two sons, Chester Gregory Jr. of Altavista and Donald Gregory of Hurt; three daughters, Patricia G. Myers of Gretna, Pamela Gregory of Altavista and Tammy Gregory of Hurt; a sister, Lillie Gregory Hill of Ashville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia G. Coles.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Gretna by Elder W.D. Peerman. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Baptist Church cemetery.
The body may be viewed 3-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Myrtle Reid
Myrtle Lee Reid, 67, 875 Green St., died Monday, Feb. 24, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 25, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Floyd Davis and Anna Low Davis.
She was married
to Major Reid, who survives.
She was educated in the Pittsylvania County School system and was employed by Dan River Inc. for many years.
She was a member of St. Paul's AME Church, where she served on the usher board, C.S. Calender Club, Women's Auxiliary, Lay Organization, and Missionary Society. She also served as a seward.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Sara R. Price, Sharon Stone, Myrtle Elizabeth Reid and Yvonne Reid, all of Danville; two sons, Charlie J. Reid and Major Willie Reid, both of Danville; two sisters, Pollie Murrill of Ringgold and Dora White of Danville; a brother, Wilbert Davis of Danville; 23 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from St. Paul's AME Church by the Rev. Thomas Weatherford. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Paul Wells
Paul M. Wells, 69, 1624 Blair Loop Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 17, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William A. Wells Sr. and Mae Bud Wilson Wells.
He was married
to Wilma Daniel Wells, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Navy for 12 years, working with the Atlantic Reserve Fleet on the following ships: USS Fulton, USS Howard W. Gilmore, and USS Forrestal.
He had lived on Blair Loop Road his entire life. He was a graduate of Brosville High School.
He was employed by First Virginia Bank South for many years and later worked for Charter Federal Savings & Loan. He then started his own business, Wells Auto Recovery, where he was owner and operator until he became disabled in 1996.
He was also a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church on North Main Street and a member of Elks Lodge No. 227.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sisters, Belva Wells Elliott of Dry Fork, Glena Wells Stephens and Garnett Wells Pompeo, both of Danville, and Lila Wells McKee of Whiteville, N.C.; and two brothers, Wilson J. Wells and William A. Wells Jr., both of Danville.
He was predeceased by a brother, William Stokes Wells, who died in 1942.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Joe M. Beck. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

C.W. Daniel
C.W. "Pete" Daniel, 75, 5781 Mount Cross Road, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.
Born Dec. 5, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charlie Harvey Daniel and Lizzie Goard Daniel.
On Feb. 11, 1948, he was married
to Doris Davis Daniel, who survives.
He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church. He was also a member of VFW Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647.
He was employed by Dan River Inc. in the maintenance department for 42 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Key Daniel Eastwood of the residence; three sisters, Irma Goardand Edith Daniel, both of Dry Fork, and Wilma Wells of Danville; and four brothers, Thomas R. Daniel and Willard Daniel, both of Dry Fork, Clarence R. Daniel of Durham, N.C., and Harvey R. Daniel of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Roger Collins. Interment
