Dr. William Watkins
SOUTH BOSTON - Dr. William R. Watkins, 87, of 1010 Marshall Ave., died Saturday, March 1, 1997, at his home.
Born Aug. 29, 1909, in Halifax County, he was the son of Tucker Carrington Watkins Jr. and Louise Barksdale Watkins.
He was married
to Ruth Porter Watkins.
He attended schools in Halifax County and at St. Christopher's School in Richmond. He was graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1931 and the University of Virginia Medical School in 1935.
He began his medical practice in South Boston in 1938. He served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945, primarily in India.
He was founder of the South Boston Clinic, now Medical and Surgical Associates; president of the South Boston Hospital; president of U.S. Oil Co. of South Boston, president of the Forest View Corp.; deacon and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in South Boston; member of the board of directors of South Boston-Halifax County Community Hospital; president of the Halifax County Red Cross chapter; charter president of the South Boston Junior Chamber of Commerce; chairman of the Halifax County Industrial Commission; president of the Halifax County Chamber of Commerce; president of the South Boston Rotary Club; director of the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Board of Visitors at VMI, and a member of the Highway Commission for Virginia.
Survivors include two daughters, Louise Watkins Moore of Halifax and Porter Watkins Thrift of South Boston; one son, Tucker Carrington Watkins IV of Clover; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, William R. Watkins Jr.
A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee. Burial will take place in Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends at his home.

James Webb
James Samuel Webb, 53, of Danville, died Saturday morning, March 1, 1997, at his home.
Born July 11, 1953, in Eden, N.C., he was the son of Frank N. Webb and Sallie Patterson Webb.
He graduated high school in Eden and received a diploma in nursing from Danville Community College. He was a licensed practical nurse in North Carolina and Virginia. He retired in March 1996 from Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, where he was employed as a department head for environmental services.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1969. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6143.
He married
Donna H. Webb on May 10, 1979.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Adam Z. Webb of the residence; five sisters, Joan W. Evans and Janie W. Rierson, both of Eden, Revonda W. Jenkins of Ridgeway, Mary W. Fox of Danville and Patricia W. Walker of Stoneville, N.C.; and three brothers, William Webb of Denver, N.C., the Rev. Charles Webb of Westfield, N.C., and Daniel Webb of Stoneville;
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Monday from Sacred Heart Catholic Church by the Rev. Father David McGuire. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home. From 6:30 to 7 p.m., an evening prayer and Rosary service will beheld.
Daniel D. Wilson Sr.
Daniel Derl Wilson Sr., 62, of 1409 West Fork Road, Cascade, died Saturday morning, March 1, 1997, in the Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health since April 1996.
Born Nov. 17, 1934, in the West Fork community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Daniel Wilson and Elsie McDaniel Wilson.
He worked in Dan River Mills for 27 years and was a supervisor in the dye house for a number of years. He later worked in the cutting department of Tultex in Martinsville for 16 years until his health failed.
Survivors include his wife, Oneeta Hensley Wilson of the home; his stepmother, Ora Frances Bray Wilson of Danville; two sons, Daniel "Danny" Wilson Jr. of Cascade and Steve Carl Wilson of the residence; four daughters, Donna W. Hawker of Cascade, Sandra W. Hogan of the Vandola community, and Joyce W. Hammock and Kathy W. Poteat, both of Danville; three brothers, Bethel Wilson and Charles "Joe" Wilson, both of Danville, and Kenneth "Wayne" Wilson of Axton; one sister, Linda Thornton of Cascade; and five grandchildren.
He also had one deceased grandson.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Richard McDowell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and other times at the residence.
Hester Albert
Hester Young Albert, 80, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following seven years of declining health.
Born May 30, 1916, in Cataning, W.Va., she was a daughter of Samuel Lewis Young and Alice Barnes Young.
She was married
to Allen Franklin Albert, who died in 1975.
She was retired from Raylass Department Store. She was also a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness. She had been a resident of the nursing home for the past four years.
She is survived by a son, Richard Albert of Danville; a daughter, Gaynelle Crowder of Danville; a sister, Georgia Loar of Radford; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Townes Memorial Chapel by Elder James R. Lentz. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 160 Linden Drive, Danville.
Roberta "Bobbi" Hardy
CHESTERFIELD - Roberta "Bobbi" Hardy, died Monday, March 3, 1997, in Chesterfield.
She was married
to Arthur M. Hardy, formerly of Danville.

Lizzie Powell
The funeral for Lizzie Powell, 103, formerly of 24 Howeland Circle, will be conducted 11 a.m. today from West Main Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Richard Vinson and the Rev. Dr. Howard Lee. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
She died Monday, March 3, 1997, in Carmel Hills of Charlotte, N.C.
Born Oct. 20, 1893, in Callands, she was a daughter of William Edward Wyatt and Anna Hankins Wyatt.
She was married
to J. Lester Powell, who predeceased her.
She was a charter member of West Main Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, Ken Powell of Charlotte; two sisters, Nell White of Newport News and Hazel Sichi of San Antonio, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

George Ray Sr.
George Warner Ray Sr., 72, 48 Oak Ridge Ave., died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, in his residence, following 10 years of declining health.
Born Sept. 26, 1924, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of George Washington Ray and Annie Hubbard Ray.
He was married
to Thelma Phelps Ray, who survives.
He had lived in Danville for the past 50 years. Prior to his retirement in 1983, he was employed by Dan River Mills in the card room for 40 years.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of American Legion Post No. 0141 in Richmond.
He was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Brenda Ray of Danville; a son, George W. Ray Jr. of Danville; two brothers, Joe Ray of North Carolina and Lawrence Ray of Yanceyville, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Harry Wilson
Harry Lee Wilson, 73, 124 Sherwood Drive, died Monday, March 3, 1997, in his residence.
Born Nov. 24, 1923, he was a son of Floyd Wilson and Sally Atkinson Wilson.
He was married
to Beulah M. Wilson.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Continental Can Co. in Baltimore as an inspector for 33 years. He was also a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Sandra Henry of Danville; two brothers, the Rev. Eldridge Wilson and Henry Wilson, both of Danville; three sisters, Frances Baswell, Aleise Atkinson and Mildred Ferguson, all of Danville; and two step grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Daryl Joyce.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.
Charlie Phillips Sr.
Charlie Lee Phillips Sr., 74, of Clarksville died March 5, 1997 in Brownsville, Tex.
Born March 31, 1922 in South Boston, he was a son of Tom and Clementine Phillips.
He was retired from Sears & Roebuck Co.
He was married
to Freda Phillips, who predeceased him.
Survivors include a son, Charles Lee Phillips Jr. of South Boston; a daughter, Frances P. Snead of Danville; 4 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Peggy Barker
AXTON - Peggy Jefferson Barker, 64, 1270 Axton Road, died Wednesday, March 5, 1997, in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
Born May 27, 1933, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Claude Jefferson and Margaret Davis Jefferson.
She was married
to Tommy J. Barker, who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She was also district and state director of the Business Professional Women's Club.
In addition to her husband of Axton, she is survived by a daughter, Sharon Kay Barker of Axton.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home in Martinsville by Dr. Dwight Christenburg Jr. A private burial will be held at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday one hour prior to the service.
