Leola Barksdale
Leola Ferguson Barksdale, 87, 212 Vance St., died Monday, March 3, 1997, in her residence.
Born Oct. 9, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Nathaniel Ferguson and Belle Conway Ferguson.
She was married
to Phillip Barksdale, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where she served on the deaconess board, in the Missionary Society, and as a choir member. She was also a member of the Baptist General Convention and the Pastor Aide Club.
She is survived by a son, Ezell Barksdale of Philadelphia; a sister, Katherine F. Brown of Danville; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Johnson. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Charlie Eanes
Charlie H. Eanes, 79, 797 Stony Mill Road, died Thursday, March 6, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.
Born March 10, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Martin Lee Eanes and Annie Gauldin Eanes.
On Dec. 25, 1940, he was married
to Lottie Barbour Eanes, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith and spent most of his life in Pittsylvania County. Prior to his retirement at age 62, he was employed by the Electric Department for the City of Danville for 34 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include seven daughters, Marie Eanes Eaton, Charlene Barksdale and Rita Jones, all of Danville, Wanda Gibson of Providence, N.C., Dianne Adkerson of Dry Fork, Sally Seay of Ringgold, and Gloria Eanes of Sutherlin; four sons, James Eanes, Danny Eanes, Earl Eanes and Rayvon Eanes, all of Danville; a sister, Carrie Haley of Java; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Valerie Mae Eanes.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Sharon Baptist Church by the Rev. Allen Holder and the Rev. Kenneth McFarling.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Sharon Baptist Church, and other times at the residence.

Mabel Fitts
Mabel Parsons Moorefield Fitts, 76, 1535 Myrtle Ave., died unexpectedly Thursday, March 6, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 25, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James H. Parsons and Frances Emerson Parsons. Her stepfather was Charlie L. Jones.
She was first married
to Carl W. Moorefield, who predeceased her. She was later married
to James D. Fitts, who is also deceased.
Her entire life had been spent in the Danville area, where she first worked in Dan River Mills. She later received her training as an LPN from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She also worked as a nurse for Dr. Greenburg until retiring in 1982.
She was an active member of the Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church, where she was a member of the Chapel Bible Class, Missionary Circle No. 9, and was a past member of the adult choir. She was also an active member of the retired club of the hospital.
Survivors include a son, Garland L. Moorefield of Durham, N.C.; a brother, James H. Parsons Jr. of Columbus, Ga.; two grandsons, Brian L. Moorefield and Kevin R. Moorefield, both of Durham; and a granddaughter, Sharon A. Moorefield of Durham.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Fred Vicks and the Rev. R. Eugene Talley. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Charlie Phillips Sr.
SOUTH BOSTON - Charlie Lee Phillips Sr., 75, 1415 Berry Hill Road, died Wednesday, March 5, 1997, in Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
Born March 31, 1921, in Halifax County, he was a son of Tom Phillips and Clementine Horton Phillips.
He was married
to Frieda Simmons Phillips, who predeceased him.
During World War II, he served in the Army. He was a member of the Eastern Star, Faulkner Memorial Lodge No. 91 AF & AM, Woodmen of the World Camp 106, V.F.W. Post 8243, and the Old Dominion CB Club.
He was a member of Second Baptist Church.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Sears as a service technician.
He is survived by a son, Charles Lee Phillips Jr. of South Boston; a daughter, Frances P. Snead of Danville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Brooks Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston by the Rev. Charles Wickham and the Rev. John Young. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his son, 1415 Berry Hill Road, SouthBoston.
James Robertson
James Burnell Robertson, 72, 271 April Lane, died Thursday, March 6, 1997, in his residence, following two years of declining health.
Born Sept. 8, 1924, in Danville, he was a son of James Floyd Robertson and Cornelia Ellen Scearce Robertson.
He was of the Baptist faith and had spent his life in Danville. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Mills Inc. as a doffer.
He is survived by two daughters, Cynthia R. Elliott of Danville and Phyllis R. Chaney of Roanoke; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Leemont cemetery by the Rev. Daryl S. Joyce.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Paul Shelton
COLLINSVILLE - Paul F. Shelton, 85, 200 Alma Blvd., died Wednesday, March 5, 1997, in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville.
Born June 28, 1912, in Winston-Salem, N.C., he was a son of Willie Jeff Shelton and Pearlie Rhodes Shelton.
He was married
to Rilla Lawless Shelton, who survives.
During World War II, he worked for Standard Garment Co. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Tultex.
He was a charter member of Stone Memorial Christian Church, where he served on the administrative board.
He was also a member of Woodmen of the World and the Knight of the Pythias.
In addition to his wife of Collinsville, survivors include a daughter, Patsy Swafford of Petersburg; a son, Billy G. Shelton of Danville; two brothers, George Shelton of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and James R. Shelton of Alexandria; a sister, Violet Wilson of Martinsville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Stone Memorial Christian Church by the Rev. Lawrence Harris. Burial will be in the Joyce family cemetery.

William Thompson
MARTINSVILLE - William Henry Thompson, 71, P.O. Box 669, died Monday, March 3, 1997, in Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 2, 1926, in Chatham, he was a son of Dave Thompson and Easter Jennings Thompson.
He was married
to Mamie Clark Thompson, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Silver Spring, Md., survivors include a daughter, Tammy Johnson of North Potomac, Md.; two sisters, Polly Gatewood of Danville and Jennie Mae Lipford of Reidsville, N.C.; two brothers, Robert Thompsonof Washington, D.C., and Randy Thompson of Java; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel in Danville by Elder Jack White. Burial will be in the Thompson Family cemetery in Chatham.

Walter Yates
Walter D. Yates, 86, 316 Randolph St., died Thursday, March 6, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born June 1, 1910, in Morganton, N.C., he was a son of Walter D. Yates and Ilah Berry Yates.
He was first married
to Vernelle Brooks Yates, who died April 25, 1982. On Jan. 1, 1983, he was married
to Ollie Henderson Yates, who survives.
He had lived in Danville since he was 18 months old.
He was associated with J.M. Church Grocery until he became co-owner of Yates Food Store on Watson Street. Prior to his retirement in 1973, he was employed by Swanson Motors Inc.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a former member of Main Street and Mount Vernon United Methodist churches.
He was also a member of the Danville Jaycees and the Exchange Club.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Walter D. Yates II of Danville; a half-sister, Rosemary Braun of Morganton, N.C.; one stepson; one stepdaughter; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Paul Johnson and the Rev. John Legault. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
