Levada Allmond
Levada Burnett Allmond, 84, of Danville House, 600 Main St., Apt. 808, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, at 7:55 p.m., in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 21, 1912, in Blairs, she was a daughter of Jason Osborne Burnett and Lula Emerson Burnett.
On May 27, 1934, she was married
to Leonard Herbert Allmond, who died Dec. 10, 1986.
She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. She had worked in the No. 5 Sewing Room and No. 8 Inspection Room of Dan River Inc., the Wesley House Day Care Center and as a sales lady for Thalhimer's.
Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Rufus of Richmond; a son-in-law, Nathan Rufus of Richmond; two sisters, Hessie Hutcherson of Danville and Elizabeth Lovelace of Baltimore; a brother, Julian Burnett of Danville; four granddaughters, Tamara Robertson, K. Annette Walker and Dawn Crowder, all of Petersburg, and Natalie Simonson of Colonial Heights; two great-granddaughters; six great-grandsons; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four brothers, A.D. Burnett, James Burnett, Clayton Burnett and Willie Burnett.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David J. Palmer. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the Hutcherson residence, 16 Oak Ridge Avenue, Danville.
James Hodnett
James Howard Hodnett, 84, 417 Airport Drive, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 3, 1913, in Halifax, he was a son of James Samuel Hodnett and Rosa Fletcher Hodnett.
On Jan. 20, 1933, he was married
to Emma LaPrade Hodnett, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, however, he frequently traveled with his construction work as a millwright.
He attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was also a member of the Dan River Retirees Club.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Iva June Sena of Union Beach, N.J., and Dale Marie Johnson of Franklin Springs, Ga.; a son, James Clarrie Hodnett of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three brothers, Herman Hodnett of Danville, Edward M. Hodnett of Ringgold and Irvin F. Hodnett of Richmond; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Henry Taylor and the Rev. Joe Beck. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Jane Jennings
AIKEN, S.C. - Jane Sanford Jennings, 70, died Saturday, March 8, 1997, following several months of declining health.
Born Feb. 5, 1927, in Stuart, Va., she was a daughter of R. Paul Sanford and Natelie Moses Sanford.
She was married
to J. William Jennings, who survives.
She spent her early life in Danville, Va., where she graduated from George Washington High School. She also graduated from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond.
She lived in Martinsville for several years before moving to Aiken 30 years ago.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Teresa "Terry" Davis of El Paso, Texas, and Rebecca "Becky" Verastegui of Knoxville, Tenn.; a son, Paul Jennings of Colorado; a sister, Nell S. Spencer of Danville; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Natalie Sanford Hill.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from St. Thaddius Episcopal Church in Aiken.
Helen Shaw
Helen Sides Shaw, 89, 1715 Aspen St., died Monday, March 10, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several weeks of declining health.
Born March 26, 1907, in Danville, she was a daughter of Boyd Charlie Sides and Ola Dellinger Sides.
On Dec. 26, 1930, she was married
to Albert Roy Shaw, who died April 6, 1980.
She spent most of her life in Danville. Prior to her retirement, she taught in the Caswell County and Pittsylvania County school systems for many years.
She was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
She is survived by a son, Millard Roy Shaw of London; two sisters, Utha S. Yeaman and Jean S. Gauldin, both of Danville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Paul Johnson and the Rev. Adolf Otersen. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Earl Walton
Charlie Earl Walton, 83, 796 Melville Ave., died Monday, March 10, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 23, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Junnie M. Walton and Mattie White Walton Hardy.
He was married
to Edith A. Walton, who survives.
He spent his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Wilson Nehi Bottling Co. for more than 45 years.
He was a member of Melville Avenue Baptist Church and a member of the Elks Lodge.
He also served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a stepdaughter, Betty A. Reynolds of Rondo; a brother, Alton Hardy of Keeling; four sisters, Lettie Turner of Martinsville, Audrey Walker of Ringgold, Betty McLaughlin and Lorena Adams, both of Keeling; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Betty Gardner
DRY FORK - Betty Mildred Jackson Gardner, 69, 649 Tobacco Road, died Monday, March 10, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following four years of declining health.
Born July 12, 1927, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Madison Monroe Jackson and Luzetta Wells Jackson.
In 1949, she was married
to Jesse Gardner, who died Dec. 31, 1992.
She was a housewife who spent most of her life in Dry Fork. She was also a member of Riveroak Church of God.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan Gardner Hines and Connie Gardner Horsley, both of Dry Fork; a son, Jesse Steven Gardner of Pelham, N.C.; a sister, Ranie Gibson of Callands; three brothers, Stonewall Jackson, Madison Jackson and Cassell Jackson, all of Martinsville; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Tim Nuckles. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, Joan Hines, 15148 Mt. Cross Road, in the Swansonville community.
George Milam
RINGGOLD - George Hartrell Milam, 93, formerly of Route 2, died Monday, March 10, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center, following several years of declining health.
Born April 28, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George John Milam and Emma Slayton Milam.
On Aug. 14, 1929, he was married
to Mary Womack Milam, who died May 10, 1984.
He spent his entire life in the Ringgold community of Pittsylvania County, where he was retired from farming. He also attended Faith Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Edward Dallas Milam of Danville; three daughters, Sylvia Lee Milam of Alton, Lois Carolyn Milam of Danville, and Teresa M. Hancock of Pelham, N.C.; a sister, Ollie M. Snead of Danville; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Viola M. Blankenship, and two brothers, Scott Milam and Frank Milam.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Bennie L. Poovey. Interment

Willie Younger
CHATHAM - Willie Jean Younger, of Pine Street, died Friday, March 7, 1997, in Duke University Hospital of Durham, N.C.
Born Aug. 29, 1953, she was a daughter of Dottie M. Younger and the Rev. Willie Younger, who survives.
She was a member of Rosebud Baptist Church, where she served on the usher board and was a member of the Hospitality Club and the Ever Ready Choir.
She was employed by PLUMA until she became disabled.
In addition to her father of Chatham, she is survived by her stepmother, Geraldine Younger of Chatham; a son, Christopher Dion Younger of the residence; a sister, Ernestine Dansby of Radcliff, Ky.; two brothers, Lawrence Younger of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Sgt. Kenneth Younger of Minot, N.D.; two stepsisters, Scherolyn Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., and Beverly Shanky of Gainsville, Fla.; and a stepbrother, Leon Byrd of Ocola, Fla.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from Rosebud Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Ross. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Garnetta Barbour
Garnetta Stanley Barbour, 80, 170 Howeland Circle, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 2, 1916, in Danville, she was a daughter of Robert Stanley and Betty Buck Stanley.
On Sept. 2, 1935, she was married
to James M. "Jack" Barbour, who survives.
For many years, she worked at the information desk in Danville Memorial Hospital, where she also served as a volunteer.
She was a member of the Ladies Benevolent Society and the Colonial Garden Club.
She was also a member of West Main Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by three daughters, Patricia E. Stafford and Betty E. Garner, both of Danville, and Nancey E. Rosse of Charlottesville.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from West Main Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Wilson. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
