Elrod Long
Elrod Magruder Long, 78, 148 Oakwood Place, died Friday, March 14, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 8, 1918, in Danville, he was a son of Magruder P. Long and Virginia Toler Long.
In 1940, he was married
to Mary Hudgins Long, who survives.
He had lived in Danville his entire life and attended Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church.
He was owner and operator of Long's Auto Electric until 1972.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Richard Glen Long of Richmond; a daughter, Carolyn Long Collins of Danville; a sister, Jean Casper of Danville; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Harry J. Long, and a sister, Virginia L. Lynch.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.
Mary Perkins
Mary Davis Perkins, 84, formerly of Westover Drive, died Friday, March 14, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 14, 1913, in Gretna, she was a daughter of Riley Davis and Eula Grace Hedrick Davis.
She was married
to Delmar R. Perkins, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Berean Bible Church. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Inc.
Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Carter Anderson of Danville; three sisters, Elsie King, Vester Hopkins and Maggie DeBoe, all of Danville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. William Blalock.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 119 James Road.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
William Shelton
The funeral for William W. Shelton, 79, 424 Keen St., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Townes Funeral Home by the Rev. Mike Campbell and the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
He died Thursday, March 13, 1997, in his residence.
Born Nov. 21, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Dallas Shelton and Mattie Davis Shelton.
He was married
to Ruth M. Shelton, who survives.
He was employed by Dan River Mills and Fieldcrest Mills in Eden, N.C., where he retired in 1980.
During World War II, he served in the Air Force. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 325.
He was also a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Linda S. Moorefield of Scottsburg and Carolyn S. Wells of Danville; two brothers, Willard Shelton of Ringgold and Lillard Shelton of Danville; three sisters, Helen Moser of Halifax, Bernice Marshall of Danville and Georgia Rigney of Axton; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by a son, Randall Shelton.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Minnie Simpson
Minnie Robertson Simpson, formerly of Chatham, died Thursday morning, March 13, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident of the Stratford House since 1991.
Born in Pittsylvania County on Oct. 19, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee "Buster" Robertson and Betty Lee Haynes Robertson.
Mrs. Simpson was a graduate of Chatham High School Class of 1931, and retired from Sears Roebuck and Company in Danville after 34 years of service. She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church in Chatham.
Mrs. Simpson was predeceased by a son, Bobby Simpson, and a daughter-in-law, Donna Dodd Simpson.
She is survived by two sons, William C. Simpson of Danville and Richard M. Mac Simpson of Arlington; four grandchildren, Scott Simpson, Brandy Simpson, Catherine Simpson, and Christine Simpson; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. from Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. James Bullock and the Rev. Carson Dalton. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.
The body will rest at the residence of her son at 129 Mountain View Avenue, where the family will also receive friends.

Eugene "Tee" Tolley Jr.
Eugene "Tee" Tolley Jr., 70, 109 Wildhurst Lane, died Friday, March 14, 1997, in his residence. He had been disabled since 1977.
Born April 17, 1926, in Danville, he was a son of Eugene Thomas Tolley Sr. and Bernetta Herndon Tolley.
He was married
to Frances Shorter Tolley, who survives.
He spent his entire life in Danville, where he was employed by Dan River Inc. He was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Brenda T. Jones of Danville; a son, Eugene Thomas Tolley III of Danville; a sister, Norma Docher of Toms River, N.J.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Richard Markham, the Rev. Tony Johnson and the Rev. J.C. Raper. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Lessie Vaughn
Lessie Brown Vaughn, 92, 118 Cain St., died Friday, March 14, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following five years of declining health.
Born April 30, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Sidney Brown and Nannie Lewis Brown.
On Dec. 27, 1922, she was married
to James Conrad Vaughn, who died May 2, 1978.
She had worked for Dan River Inc. and was later employed as a sitter at Danville Memorial Hospital.
She was a member of Rock Spring Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school in the children's division.
She was also a member of Dan River Retired Workers' Club.
She is survived by three sisters, Eva Ferguson of Sutherlin, Thelma Richardson of Ringgold, and Gray Ferguson of Danville.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Jesse Vaughn.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. today from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Howard Green. A private burial will be held in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 3-4 today at the funeral home.
Julia Booth
SOUTH BOSTON - Julia Allred Booth, 2210 Wolftrap Road, died Saturday, March 15, 1997, in her residence.
Born in Halifax County, she was a daughter of James R. Allred and Mucie May Allred.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a teacher by the Halifax County School System.
She was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served as the organist and as past president of the U.M.W.
She was also a member of the Retired Teachers.
Survivors include four daughters, Sonia B. Childrey of Halifax, Helen B. Anderson of Roanoke, Betty B. Jones of Cluster Springs and Sharon B. Holt of South Boston; a son, Douglas M. "Mac" Booth of Clarksville; a brother, Hal Allred of Weirton, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Brooks Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Samuel Jennings
Samuel Carter Jennings, 80, 145 Arnett Blvd., Building E., Apt. 4, died Friday, March 14, 1997, in his residence.
Born April 7, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charlie Byrd Jennings and Bessie Carter Jennings.
He had made his home in Danville in 1984, prior to his retirement from a company in Rhode Island, where he had worked as a machinist.
He was of the Baptist faith and a 32nd-degree Mason.
He also served in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by three sisters, Ann Constant of Raleigh, N.C., Lorena Pattisall and Mary Chandler, both of Danville; and a brother, Walter L. Jennings of Oklahoma City.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Robert Vermillion.
Harold Macklin
Harold H. Macklin, 72, 118 Melbourne Circle, died Friday, March 14, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 25, 1924, in Blackridge, he was a son of Thomas and Ida Wynn Macklin.
He was married
to Frances Hamlin Macklin, who survives.
He was employed as a truck driver for Dan River Inc.
He was also a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church, where he served on the trustee board and the deacon board.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Stevie Macklin and Dean Macklin, both of Danville; three brothers, Wallace Macklin of Salem, Paul Macklin of Baltimore and Jamie Macklin of Danville; two sisters, Helen Tisdale of East Orange, N.J., and Ruth Powell of Baltimore; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Jones Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Hayes McConnell. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The body may be viewed 4-8 p.m. Monday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
