Ernest McFarling
Ernest W. McFarling, 91, 735 Glendale Ave., died Friday, March 14, 1997, in his residence, following six months of declining health.
Born Sept. 10, 1905, in Danville, he was a son of William W. and Martha Willis McFarling.
He was married
to Ruby Daves McFarling, who died July 2, 1993.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was employed as a security guard for Dan River Inc. until he retired in 1970.
He was also a member of Providence Baptist Church.
He is survived by a daughter, Jean M. Compton of Montgomery, Ala.; a son, Ernest "Bob" McFarling of Morristown, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Gary Briden.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Julia Beck
Julia Ann Ferguson Beck, 92, of 1471 Abbott St., died Friday, March 14, 1997, at her home.
Born Jan. 14, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the Rev. Newton G. and Kate Flippen Ferguson.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess and was a member of the Missionary Circle. She was also a member of Tabutia Tents Lodge No. 27.
She retired from Export Tobacco Co.
Her husband was Judge Beck, who predeceased her.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth F. Dodson of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Johnson. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The remains may be viewed Monday afternoon at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 226 James St.
Charles Carden Sr
Charles A. Carden Sr, 72, of 386 Chatelaine Ave., died at his home Sunday morning, March 16, 1997, after six years of declining health. He had been seriously ill for one year.
Born Jan. 26, 1925, in Pulaski County, he was a son of Charles Madison Carden and Alice Rash Carden.
On Feb. 17, 1951, he was married
to Ruth Lovell Carden, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he worked at Dan River Inc. for 37 years. He retired in 1988. He attended First Church of the Living God.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Hazel Lovett of Siloam-Springs, Ark.; two sons, Charles Carden Jr. and Steven Carden both of Danville; one brother, Edward Carden of Radford; two sisters, Velma Martin of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Mary Caldwell; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-granddaughters; and a step-great-granddaughter.
He was predeceased by a grandson.
The memorial service will be conducted 4 p.m. Tuesday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Charles Cumbow.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times will be at the residence.
Lenora Ferrell
Lenora Coles Ferrell, 73, of 2300 Robin Hood Drive, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, at her home.
Born May 15, 1923, in Danville, she was the daughter of Squire Giggetts and Rosa Green Coles Giggetts.
She was educated in the Pittsylvania County schools, and was married
to Hugh Walter Ferrell, who survives.
She worked at Southern Processor until her retirement.
She was a member of The Church of God, where she served as secretary.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Mary Bryant of Danville; one sister, Flora Eppson of Houston, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by Bishop Edward Payne. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Charlie Massey
The Rev. Charlie Massey, 80, formerly of Luna Lake Road, died Saturday evening, March 15, 1997, at Riverside Health Care Center, after a four-year decline in health.
Born May 14, 1916, in Henry County, he was the son of Ira and Mattie Stone Massey.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He retired from the No. 1 card room at Dan River Inc. in 1958, after working 23 years. He was pastor of the House Hold Faith Mission in Brosville for 14 years, and he was also a songwriter.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Seamster Massey; one son, Bobby Ray Massey of Danville; one sister, Gay Gettier of Virginia Beach; one brother, Harry Massey of Suffolk; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Bennett Shelton and the Rev. Vernon Hayton.

William Adkins
William Guy Adkins, 76, 178 Rocklawn Ave., died Monday, March 17, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following eight months of declining health.
Born Oct. 17, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Lee Adkins and Ethel Crosby Adkins.
On April 26, 1941, he was married
to Dorothy Lewis Adkins, who survives.
Mr. Adkins was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church and American Legion Memorial Post No. 325. He lived in the Danville-Pittsylvania County area all his life.
He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, during which he participated in D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a combat infantryman, serving in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the World War II victory ribbon, good conduct medal, purple heart medal, meritorious award, American Theater ribbon, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater ribbon.
Following 35 years of service, he retired from Dan River Inc., after which he worked for the Danville City farm as farm manager.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Donald E. Adkins of Danville; his daughter-in-law, Judy M. Adkins of Danville; a sister, Lucille A. Harrison of Richmond; three granddaughters, Sharon A. Spain of Clarksville, Lori A. Cumbo and Mary Beth Adkins, both of Danville; a grandson, William D. Adkins of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sons, William Kenneth Adkins and David Guy Adkins.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park, where graveside military honors will be conducted by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

Margaret Atkinson
MOBILE, Ala. - Margaret Elaine Winn Atkinson, 2926 Hwy. 700, Pelham, N.C., died Saturday, March 15, 1997, in Mobile.
Born in Alamance County, N.C., she was a daughter of J.B. "Buddy" Winn, who survives, and Joann Allred Winn.
She was a 1980 graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School.
In addition to her father of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Marissa Miller of Alabama; a brother, Bryan Winn of Providence, N.C., a sister, Cynthia Diane Craver of Cascade, Va.; a half-sister, Barbie Toler of Reidsville, N.C.; a foster sister, Debra Bray of Ruffin, N.C.; her stepmother, Brenda Winn of the residence; her maternal grandfather, Thomas Lee Allred of Rose Hill, N.C.; and her paternal grandmother, Brownie Winn Dempsey of Altamahaw.
She was predeceased by a son, Jonathan Blaine Winn.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Lowe Funeral Home Chapel, Burlington, N.C. by the Rev. John Gentry. Burial will be in Berea United Church of Christ.

Carl Burks
INDIAN RIVER SHORES, Fla. - Carl Edward Burks, 71, of Old Lyme, Conn., and Indian River Shores, died Saturday, March 15, 1997, in his residence, following a brief illness.
A native of Danville, Va., he was born March 23, 1925.
He was married
to Virginia Burks, who survives.
He had been a winter resident of Indian River Shores for five years.
He was employed as a real estate agent in Old Lyme for 25 years.
During World War II and the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of Indian Shores, survivors include two sons, Kevin Burks and Brian Burks, both of Old Lyme; two brothers, Jack Burks of North Carolina and Rudolph Steagall of Martinsville, Va.; and one grandchild.
A Mass will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday from Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Rebecca Dodson
JAVA - Rebecca White Hankins Dodson, 92, 2056 Java Road, died Saturday, March 15, 1997, in Roman Eagle Nursing Home of Danville.
Born Jan. 12, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Fannie White.
She was first married
to Willie Hankins, who predeceased her. She was later married
to Phillip Dodson, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Margie Logan and Thelma Glass, both of Java, Rebecca Ferguson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Fannie Barksdale of Blairs; a stepdaughter, Helen Johnson of East Orange, N.J.; two sons, Willie Hankins of Elizabeth, N.J., and James Hankins of Danville; and a stepson, Phillip Dodson Jr. of Washington, D.C.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from Ebenezer Baptist Church in Java by the Rev. John Clark. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
