Ricky Mustain
John Richard "Rick" Mustain, 51, of 484 Willow Briar Lane, died Sunday, March 16, 1997, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born March 5, 1946, in Danville, he was the son of Herschel Edward Mustain and Shirley Aitchison Rallo, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, and was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.
He was a graduate of Evanston Township High School in Evanston, Ill.
He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother of Beverly, Mass., survivors include two sons, John Richard Mustain Jr. of Victorsville, Calif., and Paul Eric Mustain of Danville; one half-brother, Paul Rallo of Beverly, Mass.; two half-sisters, Ellen Rallo and Shirley Rallo, both of Beverly, Mass.; and his stepfather, Francis Rallo of Beverly, Mass.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Wednesday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Thomas E. Wright.
The family will receive friends at the home of Ila Swann, 1065 Franklin Turnpike.

Coleman Payne
Coleman Richard Payne, 82, 228 Motley Ave., died Monday, March 17, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born. Nov. 5, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Samuel Swanson Payne and Lilly Cocke Payne.
On Dec. 24, 1941, he was married
to Kathleen Matherly Payne, who survives.
Prior to his retirement in 1980, he was employed by Dan River Inc.
He also attended Temple Baptist Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Richard Lee Payne of Danville; a daughter, Kathy Payne McKinney of Danville; a sister, Eula Sabastian of Thomasville, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Roy Newton. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
James Pennington
James R. Pennington, 58, 16 Kimberly Ave., died Monday, March 17, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following two weeks of declining health.
Born Sept. 21, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Ella Mayhew McClanahan, who survives, and James Andrew Pennington.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was a member of Church of the Brethren faith and V.F.W. Post 647.
He was employed as a mechanic for Miller Brewing Co. in Eden, N.C.
He served in the 82nd airborne division and overseas in the 11th airborne division.
In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include a son, Steven Lee Pennington of Danville; two daughters, Kimberly Pennington Nunn and Beverley Pennington Erb, both of Danville; three brothers, Richard D. Pennington, George T. McClanahan and Edwin F. McClanahan, all of Danville; two sisters, Virginia M. Hughes and Carole McClanahan, both of Danville; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Marion M. Wade.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Wednesday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dale F. Watson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of a sister, Carole McClanahan, 443 Avondale Drive.
Irene Valentine
Irene LaRue Strader Valentine, 69, formerly of 235 Jordan St., died Sunday, March 16, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center, following three years of declining health.
Born June 11, 1927, in Allagany County, N.C., she was a daughter of Walter Willie LaRue and Lizzie Mae Edwards LaRue.
On Aug. 19, 1945, she was married
to Samuel Lester Strader, who predeceased her. On Aug. 3, 1973, she was married
to Leonard Edward Valentine, who is also deceased.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Inc. in the spinning room until her retirement. She had been a resident at the nursing home for five months.
She was also a member of Temple Baptist Church and Brown Lung Association.
She is survived by two daughters, Judy S. Buffington of Sutherlin and Linda S. Lewis of Danville; a son, Larry H. Strader of Danville; a sister, Elizabeth L. Detwiller of Greensboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by a brother, Troy A. LaRue.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Temple Baptist Church by the Rev. Roy Newton. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Charlotte Carter
JAVA - Charlotte Marilyn Jennings Carter, 75, 2054 Java Road, died Sunday, March 16, 1997, in her residence.
Born Sept. 22, 1920, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Robert Jennings and Minnie Anderson Jennings.
She was married
to Matthew Carter, who predeceased her.
She was a homemaker and a member of Church of God in Blairs.
Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte Wright of Java; eight sons, Earl Jennings and Bobby Luck, both of Java, Jessie Luck and Henry Luck, both of Chatham, Thomas Luck of Axton, Michael Luck of Jarrett, Jimmie Jennings of Danville and Wayne Jennings of Richmond; a sister, Annie Garrett of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, Marshall Jennings of Blairs; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Riceville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Oscar Eugene "Gene" Gaines, 65, 110 Elwood Ave., died Tuesday, March 18, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center following six months of declining health.
Born Sept. 7, 1931, in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was a son of Joseph Gaines and Neona Bails Gaines.
On Nov. 24, 1968, he was married
to Ruth Wilson Gaines, who predeceased him.
He spent most of his life in Baltimore and Danville. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a painter by Harry Ray Painting Co. in Baltimore.
He was also a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis L. Wilson and Carolyn L. Fochler, both of Danville; a son, Kenneth Eugene Gaines of Blacksburg; a brother, A.C. Gaines of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Mary Jo Gaines of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Gilmore J. Hundley.

Erma Miller
Erma Richardson Miller, 79, 145 Keens Mill Road, died Sunday, March 16, 1997, in her residence.
Born Sept. 15, 1917, she was a daughter of James Richardson and Lizzie Stephens Richardson.
She was married
to Samuel Miller, who predeceased her.
She is survived by five grandchildren, including Sheila Hairston, Irene Gattis and Timothy Robertson, all of Danville; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in North New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Willard Smith. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Sally Elizabeth Walton Waddell, 69, 4852 Old Richmond Road, died Monday, March 17, 1997, in her residence.
She was a daughter of Robert F. Walton and Mary L. Walton, who survives.
She was married
to Eugene Cabell Waddell Sr., who survives.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Corning Glass Inc.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of South Boston, survivors include three sons, Eugene C. Waddell Jr. of Danville, Francis Keith Waddell and Robert Leander Waddell, both of the residence; two daughters, Judith W. Hayes of Mebane, N.C., and Rhonda Breedlove Herndon of Danville; two brothers, Rudolph J. Walton and Marion F. Waddell, both of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Hilda Evans of South Boston, Margaret Greene and Catherine Walton of Philadelphia; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. today from New Bethel Baptist Church, Route 360, Halifax. Burial will be in the Walton family cemetery.

Ruby White
MARTINSVILLE - Ruby Carter White, 3692 North Fork Road, died Tuesday, March 18, 1997, in her residence.
Born Oct. 5, 1918, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Susie Bell Carter and Posey Lester Carter.
She was married
to Clarence W. White, who predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Inc.
Survivors include a daughter, Alice White Pruitt of Axton; six sons, Jimmy White of Axton, Billy White, Paul White and Carroll "Sammy" White, all of Martinsville, Roger White of Ridgeway and Tom White of Collinsville; three sisters, Sally Walker Thompson and Edith Carter, both of Martinsville, and Onia Carter Wike of Danville; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn "Sissy" Gilbert; an infant son; and five brothers, P.L. Carter, Charlie Carter, Theodore Carter, J.T. Carter and Therrin Carter.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from McKee Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Charles R. Tomlinson. Burial will be in North Fork Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
