Tinsley Brandon
BRONX, N.Y. - Tinsley Brandon, 87, died Tuesday, March 18, 1997, in New Rochelle Hospital.
Born Aug. 11, 1909, in Halifax, County, Va., he was a son of Shepherd and Phyllis Brandon.
He was married
to Nancy O'Dorothy Thornton, who predeceased him.
Survivors include six children, Dorothy Jones of Milton, N.C., Tinsley Brandon Jr., Samuel Brandon and Carolyn Brown, all of Bronx, J. Arrelle Brandon of Anchorage, Alaska, and GoDarlene Griffin of Newburg; two sisters, Eliza "Lady" Thomas of Milton and Nannie Brandon of Philadelphia; 24 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday from Greater Brandon Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, in Alton, Va. Burial will be in Macedonia A.M.E. Church cemetery, Milton.
The body may be viewed from noon until 8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora, N.C.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Moses Jones, Hwy. 62.
Mary Hairston
The funeral for Mary Lucinda Hairston, 91, 1324 Industrial Ave., will be conducted 1 p.m. today from Shiloh Baptist Church on Betts Street by the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
She died Sunday, March 16, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center.
Born June 15, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Blaine Wilson Sr. and Lula Coleman Wilson.
She was married
to Robert Hairston, who predeceased her.
Survivors include a brother, William L. Wilson Sr. of Danville; and three stepdaughters, Mary Robertson and Nannie Manly, both of Danville, and Mabel Boykin of Washington, D.C.
The family will receive friends at 904 Betts St.
Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Gertrude Jennings
The funeral for Gertrude Mae Towler Jennings, 90, 176 Forest Lawn Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Kenneth Barnes. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
She died Thursday, March 20, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center. She had been in declining health since 1987.
Born May 1, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John T. Towler and Nannie Kate Towler.
On July 5, 1930, she was married
to James Stanley Jennings, who died Nov. 2, 1992.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a member of the Baptist Tabernacle. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Danville Knitting Mill.
Survivors include five daughters, Dorothy May Jennings, Shirley Jane Moore and Geneva Smithers Stone, all of Danville, Nancy Ann Motley and Joyce Marie Jennings, both of Lynchburg; a son, Junior Ray Jennings of Danville; a sister, Irene T. Osborne of Gretna; a brother, Merlie Towler of Danville; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Betty Jean Jennings, and a son, Bobby Wayne Jennings.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
James "Jim" Hall
NORTON - James "Jim" Hall, 61, of 1163 Orender St., died Thursday, March 20, 1997, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville.
Born in McRoberts, Ky., he had lived most of his life in Norton and was retired as public works director for the city of Norton. He was a resident of Danville for several years and was employed by Piggly Wiggly.
He had worked with the Norton Little League for a number of years and served as a volunteer fireman in McLeansville, N.C., for 20 years.
Hall was of the Pentecostal faith.
He was the son of John and Lola Leady Hall.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Collins Hall of Norton; three daughters, Brenda Millsap of McLeansville, Debby of Greensboro, N.C., and Michelle of Youngsville, N.C.; three sons, Junior Hall of Oak Ridge, N.C., and Wayne Hall and Jamie Hall, both of Norton; one sister, Mabel Kilgore of Danville; two brothers, Roy Hall of Whitesburg, Ky., and J.D. Hall of San Diego, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
Hall was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Arthur and Margaret Reasor, and a brother, Bobby Hall.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. today at the Carty Funeral Home chapel in Norton by the Rev. Roy Smith. Burial will be in Laurel Grove cemetery in Norton.
Mavis Moon
Mavis Brown Moon, 71, of 718 Franklin Turnpike, died Saturday, March 22, 1997, at the Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for several years and in the hospital for one week.
Born Nov. 19, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lee Brown and Fleecie Betterton Brown.
She spent her entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County. Prior to her retirement, she was a salesperson with Sears. She also worked at Belk-Leggett.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Danville Regional Medical Center, and a member of North Main Baptist Church.
On April 20, 1946, she was married
to Victor Henry Moon, who survives.
Besides her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, Danny Moon of Danville; a sister, Rebecca Dinwiddie of Gladys; and two grandchildren.
Ola Clark
CHATHAM - Ola Clark, 89, Route 4, died Monday, March 24, 1997, in Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.
Born Aug. 28, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walker Clark and Mary White Clark.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a seamstress for Chatham Cleaners.
She was a member of the Senior Citizens Love Club.
She was also a member of Calloway Level Primitive Baptist Church, where she served as assistant clerk from 1950 until 1961 and as clerk from 1961 until 1992.
She is survived by three sisters, Minnie Witherspoon and Weader Calloway, both of Hampton, and Willie Jamerson of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from Calloway Level Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Joseph Smith and Elder Jeffrey Hairston. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Miller Funeral Home in Gretna, and other times at the residence of a niece, Ruby Jamerson, 802 Pine St., Chatham.
Barbara Garrett
Barbara Wyatt Garrett, 54, died Monday, March 24, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 18, 1943, in Martinsville, she was a daughter of John D. Wyatt and Carlene Eanes Wyatt.
She was married
to William B. Garrett, who died Dec. 4, 1983.
She was a graduate of Fieldale High School and attended Danville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.
She was formerly employed as a LPN for Dr. Walter McMann for 10 years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Gretna.
She had been a resident of Gretna Health Care Center for the past six years.
She is survived by a brother, Floyd Wyatt of Rocky Mount; and her stepmother, Elizabeth Wyatt of Martinsville.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville by the Rev. Glenn Graves.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her aunt, Kate Meeler, 333 Dairy Lane, Sutherlin.
Lena Haley
AXTON - Lena Moxley Haley, 79, 495 Hobson Road, died Monday, March 24, 1997, in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born March 10, 1918, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Charlie L. Moxley and Janie Hundley Moxley.
She was married
to Robert S. "Shack" Haley, who predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Tultex as a seamstress for25 years.
She was a member of Mount Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church of Axton.
Survivors include two daughters, Gail H. Wilson and Toy "Margaret" Moore, both of Axton; a son, Bobby Haley of Danville; two sisters, Vena Wilson and Berlie Wilson, both of Axton; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, R.T. Moxley, a sister, Ruby McGuire, and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Mount Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Gary Robertson and the Rev. Dale Wilson. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

Daniel Hodges Jr.
PENHOOK - Daniel Owen Hodges Jr., 71, died Monday, March 24, 1997.
Born Feb. 26, 1926, he was a son of Daniel Owen and Annie Mae Adkins Hodges.
He served in the military during World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Rebecca Hodges Cole of Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Elizabeth H. Amos of Callands; two half-sisters, Patricia Love of Richmond and Pauline Hodges Walker of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; a half-brother, Riley Hodges of Glade Hill; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by a son, Michael Daniel Hodges.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Adkins family cemetery in Penhook by the Rev. Belle Robertson.
