Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

John Davis

NATHALIE - John Bradley Davis, 77, 5128 Volens Road, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Dec. 5, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Samuel Crenshaw Davis and Millie Smith Davis.

He was married to Spotswood Strickland Davis, who survives.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove and Woodmen of the World Camp No. 162.

In addition to his wife of Nathalie, he is survived by two daughters, Joan Davis Richardson of Nathalie and Kathy Davis Pierce of Ringgold; a sister, Margaret Stanley of South Boston; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from First Baptist Church of Republican Grove by the Rev. Shelton Miles and the Rev. Bob Watts. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston, and other times at the residence, on Route 603.

Michael Greene

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - Michael James Greene, 72, 10 Drew St., died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in his residence, following three years of declining health.

Born Aug. 22, 1924, in Seattle, he was a son of Margaret Greene.

He was married to Viola Reid Greene, who survives.

He spent most of his life in the New York area, where he was employed as manager of Delson Shoe Store in Port Chester before retiring.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and Army Air Corps.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Deborah R. Shelton of Providence, N.C.; two brothers, Anthony Greene and David Greene, both of Seattle; three sisters, Elizabeth Hariett, Marie Greeneand Virginia Greene, all of Seattle; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Kenneth D. Hall.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his granddaughter, Daphine Moore, 1004 Greenwood Ave., in Druid Hills.

Marion McCubbins

Marion Stowe McCubbins, 82, 130 Colonial Court, Apt. 44, died Tuesday, March 25, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several months of declining health.

Born Oct. 23, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walter C. Boswell and Mattie Wiley Boswell.

She was first married to Henson T. Stowe, who died in 1981. She was later married to Irvin McCubbins, who survives.

She spent most of her life in the Danville area, where she was employed by Dan River Inc. in the No. 5 Finish Department until her retirement.

She was a member of North Main Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Brenda S. Hardison of Danville; a son, Robert W. Stowe Sr. of Danville; a stepson, Wayne McCubbins of Danville; a brother, Walter H. "Pete"Boswell of Danville; two sisters, Virginia B. Giles and Frances B. Elliott, both of Danville; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;and one stepgreat-grandchild.

She was also predeceased by a son, H.T. Stowe Jr.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Eddie Davis and the Rev. Kyle Flora. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of a grandson, Robert W. Stowe Jr., 773 Mangrums Road, State Road 876.

Maude Shelton

GRETNA - Maude Shelton Shelton, 100, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in Gretna Health Care Center.

Born May 12, 1896, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Rawleigh Martin Shelton and Mellissa Yeatts Shelton.

She was married to E. Thomas Shelton, who predeceased her.

She was a member of West End Church of Christ.

She is survived by a sister, Elsie Pickeral of Hampton; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Madeleine S. Smith, and two sons, Leewood P. Shelton and Fred R. Shelton.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Gretna Burial Park by the Rev. W.D. Lilly.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home of Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude Whatnall

Gertrude Wohinz Whatnall, 85, 358 Martin Ave., died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in Martinsville Health and Rehabilitation Center. She had been in declining health since 1976.

Born Dec. 3, 1911, in New Britain, Conn., she was a daughter of Anton Wohinz and Cornelia Meulleur Wohinz.

On June 12, 1940, she was married to Harry George Whatnall, who died in June 1964.

Prior to moving to Danville in September 1985, she had spent most of her adult life in Portland, Maine.

She was employed by the main branch office of Continental Assurance Co. as a secretary for 30 years. After retiring, she worked for the law firm of Bernstein, Scherr, Scherr & Nelson for 15 years.

She served as president of the National Secretaries Association for two terms.

She is survived by a nephew and three nieces, including Audrey Holstad of the residence.

Interment will be held at a later date in Evergreen-Forest cemetery in Portland.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Maria Williams

Maria Williams died Sunday, March 23, 1997, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Born May 15, 1959, in Florida City, Fla., she was a daughter of Dale Walker and Patrice Hedden Walker, who survive.

In addition to her parents of Newberry, Fla., survivors include three sons, Freddie Williams, Jason Williams and Kevin Williams, all of Danville; two daughters, Athena Williams and Gretchen Duvall, both of Danville, foursisters, Minnie Berardo of Rocky Mount, Yolanda Dubreuil of Miami, Lucero Britton of Texas and Misty Walker of Jacksonville; and a brother, Delray Dubreuil of New York; and her foster mother, Pat Elkins Crawford.

A memorial service was conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home Chapel.

Ernest Bostic Jr.

Ernest "Clyde" Bostic Jr., 67, 1741 Blair Loop Road, died Thursday, March 27, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following two months of declining health.

Born Feb. 22, 1930, in Danville, he was a son of Eva Elizabeth Wright Bostic, who survives, and Ernest Clyde Bostic Sr.

On Aug. 15, 1953, he was married to Jean Wood Bostic, who survives.

During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was employed by C&P Telephone Co. as a central office technician for 39 years. He retired in 1989.

He was a member of VFW Post No. 647.

In addition to his mother of Danville and his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Dennis W. Bostic of Suffolk, David C. Bostic of Richmond and Randall L. Bostic of Danville; a brother, Dale B. Bostic of Lynchburg; and six grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Johnny Jones.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Archer Burton

Archer Clarence Burton, 82, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center, following two years of declining health.

Born Nov. 17, 1914, in Sutherlin, he was a son of Charles Earnest Burton and Anna Farmer Burton.

He was married to Emily Gilbert Burton, who died May 28, 1992.

He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he had been a Sunday school teacher for 25 years.

He spent most of his life in Danville. He owned and operated Virginia Mercantile Co. for 25 years.

He is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Anne Burton of Danville; and a brother, James F. Burton of Bristol.

The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday from First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe Beck and the Rev. Kenneth Terry. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, and other times at the residence of John and Dianne Gilbert, 2421 Hillside Road.

Robert Eastham

GRETNA - Robert William Eastham, 79, 212 Washington St., died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 4, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Thomas Eastham and Ebbie Ira Eastham.

He was married to Alice Riddle Eastham, who predeceased him.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a maintenance employee by the Pittsylvania County schools. He was also a member of Gretna Christian Church.

During World War II, he served in the Army.

He is survived by two daughters, Anne E. Whitt of Gaithersburg, Md., and Jean E. Dalton of Hurt; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Colbert-Moran Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Interment icon will be in Gretna Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
