Oscar Nelson
Oscar Nelson, 86, of 880 Luna Lake Road, died March 29, 1997, at Piney Forest Health Care Center. He had been in declining health since 1993 and had entered the nursing home in March.
Born June 5, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Walter Nelson and Clara Francis Nelson.
He had spent his entire life in the Danville area, where he was one of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Nelson retired from Dan River Inc., where he worked as a carpenter in the maintenance department and later worked for 16 years with the city of Danville in the electric department.
He was married
to Ellen Wann Nelson, who survives.
Nelson was predeceased by a daughter, June Reynolds.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one brother, Harry Nelson of Danville; one sister, Mattie Vass of Danville; and one grandchild.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. April 5 at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel by Minister Doug Curry. A private burial will be held later at the Nelson family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Linsey Raines
Linsey Kermit Raines, 78, of 314 Richmond Ave., died March 28, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health since 1980.
Born Jan. 27, 1919, in Polk County, N.C., he was a son of William Raines and Lula Garrett Raines.
Raines had lived his life in the Danville area where, prior to his retirement, he worked as machine operator in the dye house at Dan River Inc.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in northern France. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, was ranked as staff sergeant and served as squad leader.
Raines was of the Baptist faith.
He was married
to Ruby Gilleland Raines, who died in 1988.
Survivors include two brothers, John Raines of Danville, and Carl Raines of Louisa.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Leemont cemetery by the Rev. Robert Vermillion.

Ethel Barbour
NATHALIE - Ethel Walker Barbour, 77, of 1057 Rock Barn Road, died Sunday, March 30, 1997, in Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Brookneal.
Born Nov. 23, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Samuel Walker and Pency Hamm Walker.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charlie H. Barbour.
She was a homemaker and a member of Riceville Baptist Church, Java.
Survivors include four daughters, Florine Venable, Hildred Lawson and Annie B. Barbour all of Nathalie, and Dorothy Jones of Chester, Pa.; four sons, Joe Barbour and Walker Barbour both of Hurt; James Barbour of Nathalie and Lenwood Barbour of Craigsville; two sisters, Christine Walker and Louise Walker both of Java; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Geneva Lewis, and one son, Charlie Thomas Barbour.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Riceville Baptist Church by the Rev. W.R. Venable. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Pearl Davis
WILMINGTON, Del. - Pearl Childress Davis, 56, formerly of Halifax County, died Thursday, March 27, 1997, in Hillside Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 15, 1940, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Richard Childress, who is predeceased, and Mattie Hubbard Childress, who survives.
Prior to her retirement on disability, she worked for the University of Delaware.
She was a member of the Church of God in Wilmington.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Davis of Wilmington; one daughter, Masheba Jennings of Newark; two sons, Richard Davis Jr. of Chester, Pa., and Burley Davis of Wilmington; one sister, Mary Lovelace of Newark; three brothers, James Childress and Hubert Childress both of Gretna, Va., and Otis Childress of Claymont; and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount Airy Baptist Church by the Rev. R.P. King. Burial will be in Hermosie cemetery in Nathalie, Va.
The family will receive friends at the home of her brother, James "Scoop" Childress, Hermosie Road, Gretna, Va.

John Worley
John Matthew Worley, 51, of 132 Swain Drive, died Monday morning, March 31, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He fell ill suddenly at home, and died an hour after reaching the hospital.
Born March 19, 1946, in the Dry Fork community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Eula Jones Worley, who survives, and E.D. Worley, who is predeceased.
He was married
to Patsy Brown Worley, who survives.
A 1965 graduate of Spring Garden High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. During the Vietnam conflict, he was a sergeant with the 464th Maintenance Squadron as a radio repairman.
He worked for McRae Graphics for seven years as a service technician, and was a member of the American Legion Memorial Post 325.
He was also a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church, where he was a choir member and a member of the maintenance committee.
In addition to his mother of Blairs and his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Walter Douglas Worley of Atlanta; one sister, Kay Myers of Orange; one brother, Doug Worley Jr. of Danville; and one granddaughter.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Woodberry Hills Baptist Church by the Rev. Lewis Harris. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Odarris Daniel
WATERBURY, CONN. - Odarris Daniel, 82, 125 Hill St., died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, in Crescent Manor following a short illness.
Born Aug. 14, 1914, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Green and Lula Owens McGee.
She had lived in Waterbury since 1992.
She was a member of Mount Olive Senior Citizens Program.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Johnson of Waterbury; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted 6 p.m. Friday, March 28, at Keyes Funeral Home in Waterbury. Burial was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, in New Pine Grove cemetery.
Daniel Edwards Jr.
SANDY LEVEL - Daniel Edsel Edwards Jr., 33, of 7476 Grassland Drive, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997.
Born May 3, 1963, in Danville, he was a son of Daniel Edsel Edwards Sr. and Merle Anderson Edwards, both of Sandy Level.
Daniel was a graduate of Gretna Senior High School and was a member of Penhook United Methodist Church. He was an employee with Spun Fibers in Collinsville until he became disabled.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Constance "Connie" Edwards of Roanoke.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Cool Branch Rescue Squad, Penhook, Va., 24137 or to your favorite charity.
The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Penhook United Methodist Church by Pastors Betty D. Marshall and Wayne Grinnell. Interment
will follow in the Liberty Memorial cemetery.

Jack Glasgow Sr.
Jack L. Glasgow Sr., 75, 437 Woodlawn Drive, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 15, 1921, in Danville, he was a son of Alvin Daniel Glasgow and Minnie Moore Glasgow.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Plumbing and Mill Supply as a sales representative for 27 years.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of VFW Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647.
He is survived by two sons, Jack Lee Glasgow Jr. of Danville and John E. Glasgow of Greensboro, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Curtis Daniel Glasgow, and a sister, Lillie Holmes.
A memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday from Woodlawn Baptist Church by the Rev. William Blalock.
The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Baptist Church, and other times at 24 Brown Lane.

Lucille Higgins
RICHMOND - Lucille Anderson Higgins, of Richmond, died Monday, March 31, 1997.
She is survived by her husband, John Clyde Higgins of Richmond; a daughter, Trina H. Estes of Midlothian; a son, John Michael Higgins of Danville; a sister, Irene Nichols of Hudson, N.C.; brothers, Frederick Anderson of Roanoke and George Anderson of Hagerstown, Ind.; grandsons, Brad, Holden, Jonathan and Ryan Estes.
Her remains rest at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road, Richmond, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday. Interment
will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 tonight.
