Garland Scarce
Garland Emerson Scarce, 69, 1718 Southwest 35th Circle, Okeechobe, Fla., died Saturday, April 5, 1997, at the Florida Hospital, Orlando, Fla., after a decline in health for a number of years.
Born Sept. 20, 1927, in the Whitmell community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John H. Scarce and Ella Tate Scarce, who predeceased him.
He was married
to Martha Mosell Scarce.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He had spent most of his life in Chicago, where he was a machinist for the Sweetheart Cup Corp. until retiring six years ago. He moved to Florida in 1990 and was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Joseph Henry Scarce of Chicago; one brother, William H. Scarce of Whitmell; and three sisters, Clara Rigney and Mary Ann Paul, both of Axton, and Marie Bean of Pelham, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. George Riggins. Interment
will be at the Scarce family cemetery in Whitmell.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-8:30 tonight, and at other times will be at the residence of his brother William H. Scarce, 253 West Sunrise Drive, Whitmell.
Lucy Glenn
Lucy Handy Scarce Glenn, 91, 2526 North Main St., died Tuesday, April 8, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Sept. 10, 1905, in Patrick County, she was a daughter of David Handy and Tecoa Handy.
She was first married
to J. Richard Scarce, who died in 1955. She was later married
to Ernest Glenn of Farmville, who is also deceased.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Adelene Haar of Danville; two sisters, Eva Montgomery of Danville and Berdie Wells of Kernersville, N.C.; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by a son, James Richard Scarce Jr., and a brother, Ray Handy.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Dr. Walter Graham.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 218 Astor Court, Danville.

Janet Johnston
Janet F. Johnston, 64, 450 Piney Forest Road, died Monday, April 7, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born April 1, 1933, in Roanoke, she was a daughter of Edward W. Johnston and Ruth Craddock Johnston, who survives.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Triple L, and Lucille Rumney Sunday School Class.
She was a graduate of Viaud School in Roanoke.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as an Avon representative from 1975 until 1984. She was a sitter from 1968 until 1975.
In addition to her mother of Danville, she is survived by a sister, Dorothy J. Whelchel of Albany, Ga.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Dr. David Gray. Interment
will be held 3 p.m. Friday in Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Alice Gravely
Alice Scholfield Gravely, 507 Holbrook Ave., died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following three years of declining health.
Born July 10, 1906, she was a daughter of Jacob and Kate Scholfield.
She was married
to James "Buck" Gravely, who died in 1988.
She grew up in the Laurel Grove community.
She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher in the junior department for many years.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Alice Wertz of San Antonio, Texas; a son, James Lewis Gravely III of Mount Jackson; a brother, J.G. Scholfield of Avon Park, Fla.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. John T. LeGault Jr. and the Rev. James Gravely.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Wanda Radford
Wanda Marie Funk Radford, 79, formerly of 58 Hylton Ave., died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Sept. 26, 1917, in Grayson County, she was a daughter of Ernie W. Funk and Ollie Bedwell Funk.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Inc. in the sewing room for 47 years.
She was a member of the Baptist Tabernacle.
Survivors include a son, Donald Wayne Radford of Danville; two brothers, Felix Funk of Danville and Rex Funk of Fries; three sisters, Mildred Layne of Galax, Virginia Kirby of Danville and Alene Carrico of Fries; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Roy Parker.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, 260 Maybrook Ave., Danville.

Inez Reynolds
CHATHAM - Inez Reynolds Reynolds, 84, 10565 Callands Road, died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, in her residence.
Born May 10, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Reynolds and Elva Adkins.
She was a member of Tabernacle Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband, J. Gilmer Reynolds of the residence.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Vergie Reynolds and Gladys Nuckols, and a brother, Earl Reynolds.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Hollywood Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. J. Haywood Alcorn.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham, and other times at the residence.
Rachel Strickland
Rachel Reed Strickland, 84, of Roman Eagle Nursing Home, died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 22, 1913, in Sparta, N.C., she was a daughter of Alley Reed and Allen Reed.
On March 20, 1965, she was married
to Clayton Strickland, who predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Inc. for 35 years.
She was a member of Church of the Brethren.
She is survived by three sisters, Disa R. Jackson and Norma R. Smith, both of Danville, and Mabel S. Nelson of Pelham, N.C.
A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday from Church of the Brethren on Glen Oak Drive.
Thomas Burton
AXTON - Thomas Dee Burton, 83, 830 Mountain Valley Road, died Thursday, April 10, 1997, in the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County.
Born July 1, 1913, he was a son of James Joseph Burton and Nola Yarboro Burton.
He was married
to Mildred Collins Burton, who survives.
He was a member of Carroll United Methodist Church in Axton and was a former member of Stokesland United Methodist Church.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Cat & Fiddle Supermarket for 35 years.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was in the European Theatre.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Kidd of Roanoke and Marlyn Clifton of Axton; two brothers, Jessie W. Burton and Bruce R. Burton, both of Danville; a sister, Frances Dunn of Danville; four grandchildren; one step grandchild; four great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Fred Clemmons, the Rev. Fletcher Hardy, and the Rev. Calvin Johnson. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Oliver Chapman Jr.
Oliver Hamel Chapman Jr., 60, 271 West Main St., died Thursday, April 10, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 7, 1936, in Newport News, he was a son of Oliver Hamel Chapman Sr. and Marjorie Ramey Chapman.
He was married
to Janice F. Chapman, who survives.
He was a member and past master of Myron M. Parker Lodge No. 27 A.F. & A.M.
He lived in the D.C. and Maryland area for 36 years, but relocated back to Danville in 1993.
He was a member of the Scottish Rite of the S.J. of the Valley of Washington, D.C.
He was employed as a manager for Peoples Drug Store in Washington, D.C., for 24 years. He was self-employed for 20 years.
He was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, where Dr. Don Davidson is pastor.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include a son, Steven Lee Chapman of Marshall; a daughter, Terri Lynn Chapman of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; a sister, Nancy Chapman Shumate of Ringgold; an uncle, Robert L. Ramey of Greenville, N.C.; and two grandchildren, April Michelle Chapman and Steven Anthony Chapman, both of Marshall.
Burial by cremation will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Danville Memorial Gardens Chapel by the Rev. Don Davidson.
