Helen Earles
Helen Gravely Earles, 80, formerly of 1345 Westover Drive, died Friday, April 11, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Sept. 3, 1916, in Danville, she was a daughter of Joseph Jackson Gravely and Eula Lovell Gravely.
In 1940, she was married
to Thomas T. Earles Jr., who died May 20, 1988.
She spent her entire life in the Danville area, where she was employed by Riverside Agency as a licensed insurance agent for 27 years.
Since 1904, she had been a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where she served as secretary of the board for six years.
She is survived by a son, Thomas T. Earles III of Culpeper; a daughter, Betty Lou Earles of White Plains, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Larry Edmonds.

Dorothy Foster
Dorothy Lee Foster, 67, 1049 Gilbert St., died Thursday, April 10, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 30, 1930, she was a daughter of Alvin Foster and Semore McGhee Foster.
She was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, where she served in the senior choir.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Richmond Cedar Works.
She is survived by a sister, Ruby F. Dodson of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Mount Carmel Baptist Church by the Rev. James Stewart. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The remains may be viewed at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home until 8 p.m. today.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Renita Thomas, 179 White St.
Everett "Jack" Hawker
SAN JOSE, CALIF. - Everett Jackson "Jack" Hawker, 77, died Tuesday, April 8, 1997.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of Matthew M. and Lucille E. Ashby Hawker.
He was married
to Kuniko "Lily" I. Hawker, who survives.
He graduated from Turbeville High School.
He retired from the U.S. Navy and as a Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriff. He was a member of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.
In addition to his wife of San Jose, survivors include three sons, John Hawker, Richard Hawker, and Thomas Hawker; two daughters, Geraldine "Jerri" Kindle and Shirley Ryan; and two brothers, Ronnie Hawker of Suwanne, Ga., and Wayne Hawker of Fredericksburg, Va.
He was predeceased by several siblings, Gallie Hawker, Clifton Hawker, Audrey H. Testerman, Barbara H. Gregory, and Rachel H. Gurthrie.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. (PST) Monday from Oak Hill Funeral Home Chapel of Roses in San Jose by the Rev. Richard L. Bowman. Military honors will be given by the Masonic Lodge.
A private burial will be in Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Gladys Hearp
The funeral for Gladys Reynolds Hearp, 68, 440 F.C. Beverly Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Roger Collins, the Rev. Mike Hearp, the Rev. Cecil Coates, and the Rev. John Meadows. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She died Thursday, April 10, 1997, in her residence, following seven years of declining health.
Born July 11, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Beverly Thomas Reynolds and Lillian Merricks Reynolds.
On Dec. 10, 1946, she was married
to Jack Dempsey Hearp, who died April 1, 1990.
She spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County.
She had retired after several years of service with the Credit Department in the Danville Sears Store.
She was a member of Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include a son, the Rev. Michael E. Hearp of Dry Fork; two daughters, Jackie H. Henderson and Tammy H. Carter, both of Dry Fork; two brothers, the Rev. Harold T. Reynolds of Danville and Stanley G. Reynolds of Chatham; two sisters, Arlene R. Green of Roson, N.C., and Barbara R. Scearce of Dry Fork; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Elwood Reynolds and Julian Wade Reynolds.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church, and other times at the residence, on State Road 703, off Route 41.

Robert Hundley
Robert Thomas Hundley, 82, 121 Lipton Lane, died Wednesday night, April 9, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Hundley was born Nov. 23, 1914, in Rockingham County, N.C. He was the son of James R. Hundley and Minnie Kirks Hundley.
He was married
to Lillian Elliott Hundley on Aug. 12, 1933. She survives at the residence.
At an early age, Mr. Hundley moved to Sandy River, where he lived until moving to Danville in 1930. He had lived in Danville for the past 64 years.
Mr. Hundley was the past owner and president of the Wise Hundley Electric Company until retirement. He was still very active in the Wise Hundley Furniture Store.
He was a member of Roman Eagle Lodge 122 AM & FM, as well as the Danville Horticulture Club and Host Lions Club. Mr. Hundley was an active member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Henry Hardy Class and the choir.
Besides his wife of the residence, he is survived by one son, Donald T. Hundley of Norristown, Pa.; one daughter, Patsy H. Barr of Midlothian; seven grandchildren, Sanford Hundley, Floyd Hundley, Susan Riehs and Diana Troxel, all of Pennsylvania, Jayne Manetz of Virginia Beach, Rebecca Barr of Cary, N.C., and Anne David Barr of Midlothian; three great-grandchildren; three nieces, Jackie Pickral of Chatham, Glenda Creasy of Lynchburg, and Jeanette Knick of Danville; one nephew, David Lillard of Chesapeake; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Toler of Chatham.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 12, 1997, at 3 p.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Larry Edmonds, the Rev. Dr. Thomas Evans, the Rev. Linwood Daniel and the Rev. Louis Carson. Interment
will be at Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence at 121 Lipton Lane.

Versie Neal
Versie Mae Lawless Rakes Neal, 81, 304 Church St., died Thursday, April 10, 1997, in 4515 Ole Log Lane, Kernersville, N.C., following five months of declining health.
Born May 7, 1915, in Stuart, she was a daughter of Daniel Lawless and Anice Walker Lawless.
She was first married
to Clarence McKinley Rakes, who died in 1979. She was later married
to Edgar Hughey Neal, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Inc. for many years prior to her retirement.
She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Kermit Ray Rakes of Danville and Donald M. Rakes of Kernersville, N.C.; two sisters, Lorene L. Hodnett of Stuart and Pearl L. Shaw of Greensboro, N.C.; three brothers, Raymond Lawless of Colonial Heights, Stoman Lawless of Collinsville and Adolphus Lawless of Stuart; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Keen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Campbell and the Rev. David Patterson. Burial will be held 4:30 p.m. Sunday in Sycamore Baptist Church cemetery, near Woolwine.

Jesse Powell
The funeral for Jesse Edgar Powell, 82, 222 Courtland St., Apt. 203, will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Roger Collins and the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. Burial will be in Emmanual Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
He died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 1, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Ellis and Mary Ellen Powell.
He was married
to Sybil Jones Powell, who died in 1986.
He was of the Pentecostal faith.
He had been employed as a timber buyer for Nash Lumber Co.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Porter of Buffalo Junction and Priscilla Killeen of Greenbelt, Md.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Gilmer Daniels, 718 Dry Fork Road, Dry Fork.
Olin Saunders
RINGGOLD - Olin Eldridge Saunders, 69, 3392 Birch Creek Road, died Monday, April 7, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 10, 1997, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Henry Saunders and Malissa Gunn Saunders.
He was married
to Ella Carnell Ferguson Saunders, who survives.
He was a member of Kentuck Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, trustee, treasurer and as Sunday school teacher of the adult class.
He was employed as a deputy sheriff for 20 years.
In addition to his wife of Ringgold, survivors include two sons, Col. Olin E. Saunders Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C., and Staney L. Saunders of Davenport, Iowa; three daughters, Connie S. Ferguson of Ringgold, Karen E. Saunders-McClenton of Plymouth and Myra M. Saunders-Pugh of Richmond; three sisters, Nannie Freeman of Washington, D.C., Gertrude Jones of Cincinnati, and Jessie Oliver of Ringgold; a brother, Algie Saunders of Danville; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from Kentuck Missionary Baptist Church in Ringgold by the Rev. Jesse Fitz. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
