Sallie Anderson
Sallie Hughes Anderson, 87, of 2526 N. Main St., died Sunday, April 13, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for several years and a resident at Roman Eagle for eight years.
Born Oct. 31, 1909, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Robert Cable Hughes and mary Emma Chandler Hughes.
She spent her entire life in Sutherlin, where she was a homemaker.
Her husband was Wister White Anderson, who is predeceased.
She was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, George Alfred Anderson, Champ Barksdale Anderson, and Charles Waddill Anderson all of Sutherlin; four daughters, Virginia A. Russell of Richmond and Emma A. Turner and Mariah A. Farmer both of Danville, and Judy A. Wood of Raleigh, N.C.; four sisters, Elsie H. Owen of Wilkesboro, NC.; Annie Mae H. Hodnett and Emma H. White both of Keeling, and Thelma H. Bane of Vernon Hill; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Robert Hughes Anderson.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. A. Kyle Flora. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Joseph Bernard
Joseph Lee Bernard, 79, of 707 Westover Dr., died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born March 10, 1918, in Danville, he was the son of Benjamin Joseph Bernard and Hattie Lee Gibson Bernard.
He retired from the No. 5 pipe shop at dan River Inc., and also worked as a security guard at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
He was a member of Third Ave. Congregational Christian Church; a member of American Legion Post 325; and the Poquoson Tribe No. 124, and the Wynette Chapter of Pocahontas.
He was also a member of the Senior Citizens Club.
On Oct. 15, 1988, he was married
to Ruby Bolen Bernard, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Jo Ann K. Chattin of Dry Fork; four sons, James E. Bernard of richmond, Buddy G. Bernard of Greensboro, N.C.; Michael T. Bernard of Cumberland, and David B. Bernard of Danville; one sister, Geraldine Waller of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Harvey G. Bernard of Baltimore; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence.
Gladys Bishop
PORTSMOUTH - Gladys N. Bishop, 70, of 200 Block of York Drive, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, in Portsmouth Hospital.
Born March 1, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Elijah Norton and Ollie Higgs Norton.
She was married
to Raymond T. Bishop, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Jane Brooks of Leasburg, N.C.; Ollie Oneida Bishop of Portsmouth and Brenda Vanderberry of Suffolk; one son, Nick Bishop of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sturtevant Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Allen L. Dooley. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 Tuesday night at Sturtevant Funeral Home Chapel, Portsmouth.
Ivonne Hammond
Ivonne "Tillie" Thompson Hammond, 81, of 4068 Reeves Mill Road, in the Laurel Grove community, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, in her home. She had been in declining health for two years.
Born Dec. 5, 1915, in Loucomma, N.C., she was a daughter of Loel Thompson and Bertie Royal Thompson.
She was a retired beautician.
She was married
to James I. Hammond, who died in September 1986.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Bobby Price of Danville; one daughter, Nancy Motsinger of Laurel Grove; one sister, Madge Thompson of Richmond; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family is at the residence, 4068 Reeves Mill Road.

Juanita Jones
Juanita Ferguson Jones, 50, of 275 Camp Grove Place, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 24, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Clifton Ferguson and Ester Lee Lanier.
She was a member of Camp Grove Baptist Church and a custodian at G.W. High School.
Survivors include two daughters, Cherie J. Garland and Nakita Jones both of Danville; two sons, Johnnie L. Jones Jr. and Gary Jones both of Danville; four sisters, Geneva Strader of Irmo, S.C., Dianna Jameson of Newport News, Faye Harper of Asheville, N.C., and Cathy Bennett of Danville; three brothers, Terry Ferguson of Ringgold, Clifton Ferguson Jr. and Edward Lanier both of Danville; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Camp Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie J. Toomer. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The remains may be viewed this afternoon until 8 p.m. at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home, and other times the family will be at 512 Keen St.
Harvey B. King
Harvey B. King, 70, of 114 Chatham Ct., died Sunday, April 13, 1997, in Grandstand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C. He had been in declining health for several years.
Born July 5, 1926, in Richmond, he was the son of William T. King and Martha Thomas King.
He moved from Lynchburg to Danville in 1948 to work for Dan River Inc.
He was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, the American Legion Post 325, and the VFW ballard Pruitt Post 647.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
On May 27, 1950, he was married
to June Londeree King, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Cathy A. King of Danville and Rhonda K. Slavish of Surfside Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Claude King of Smithsburg, Md. and Clyde King of Concord.
He was predeceased by a sister and two brothers.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Michael Campbell. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Grace Melton
Grace Bell Melton, 84, 326 Wrenn Drive, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 30, 1913, in Greer, S.C., she was a daughter of Rufus M. Melton and Fannie Ramey Melton.
She worked for Dan River Inc. and was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was predeceased by a brother, Dewey Melton, and two infant brothers.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe Beck, the Rev. Ben Rose, and the Rev. W.E. Bauling. Interment
will be in Overlook cemetery, Eden N.C.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home. At other times, they will be the residence of Lola and James Willis, 326 Wrenn Drive.
Jesse Newby Sr
CHATHAM - Jesse Bennett Newby Sr., 83, 276 Samuel Harris Lane, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 18, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Henry C. Newby and Mary Jones Newby.
He was a member of Samuel Harris Baptist Church and was a retired carpenter.
He was married
to Nancy Giles Newby.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, of the residence, include a son, J.B. Newby Jr. of Chatham; two daughters, Carolyn N. Younger and Doris Ann N. Motley, both of Chatham; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Samuel Harris Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas E. Wright and the Rev. Allan Holder. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Geraldine Osborne
DRY FORK - Geraldine Rigney Osborne, 67, 648 W.I. Powell Road, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, at her residence.
Born Nov. 24, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Rigney and Fannie Bates Rigney.
She was a member of Marion Baptist Church and worked at Mills Grocery before her retirement.
She was married
to Roncie Lee Osborne on Dec. 27, 1947.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, of the residence, include a daughter, Deborah O. Finch of Dry Fork; three sisters, Viola Rigney of Reidsville, and Jessie R. Barbour and Alene R. Parker, both of Chatham, a brother, Billy Rigney of Dry Fork; two grandchildren, one step-grandchild, one great-grandchild and one step-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Steve Johnson and the Rev. Harvey Johnson. Interment
