Elizabeth Eberhart
Elizabeth S. Eberhart, 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996, in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born July 24, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Triplett B. Stone and Amanda Richardson Stone.
She was married
to John Bernard Eberhart, who predeceased her.
She was employed as a nurse by Glendale Hospital in Maryland until her retirement. She had lived in Danville for the past 20 years.
She is survived by a niece, Nancy Mayhew of Keeling, and two nephews, Buddy Mayhew of Blairs and Carroll Edwards of Sanston.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from First Baptist Church by the Rev. David Gray Sr. and the Rev. Joe Northen.
She donated her body to science through the Virginia Anatomical Society.
Hubert King
CHATHAM - Hubert Lloyd King, 80, 906 Star Route, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997, in Franklin Memorial Hospital of Rocky Mount.
Born April 23, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Thomas and Carrie Dillard King.
He was married
to Mary Lena King, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Callands Baptist Church. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by American Furniture Co. in Martinsville. During World War II, he served in the Army.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence King and Normon King, and by two sisters, Ruby Webb and Mary Muse.
Survivors include a son, Phil King of Danville; a daughter, Linda Gravely of Axton; three sisters, Louise Roher of Chatham, Nannie Roher of Camden, N.J., and Doris Abram of Philadelphia; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday from Callands Baptist Church by the Rev. Samuel Scales. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Virginia King, 305 Hunter Road, Chatham.

James 'Bill' Thomas
James William "Bill" Thomas, 77, 172 Bell Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following two years of declining health.
Born June 8, 1919, in Washington County, he was a son of James L. Thomas and Eunice Hammonds Thomas.
He was married
to Fannie Long Thomas, who survives.
He spent most of his life in the Danville area and was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired painter and carpenter. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Debra Eanes and Joan Lewis, both of Danville, and Helen Thomas of the residence; a brother, Junior Thomas of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Tommy London. Military honors will be given by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Lou Barksdale
Lou Augusta Barksdale, 81, 137 Northern Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 24, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Robert Graves and Leathia Barksdale Graves.
She was married
to Willie Barksdale, who predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Southern Processors Inc.
Survivors include four sons, Ernest Barksdale, Robert Lee Barksdale, Bobby Lee Barksdale and Ronald Whit Barksdale, all of Danville; four daughters, Dorothy Glymph, Lottie Barksdale, Betty Saunders and Leathia Kates, all of Danville; a sister, Bertha Barksdale of Danville; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from Kentuck Baptist Church in Ringgold by the Rev. Jessie Fitts. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

David Bryant Sr.
CHATHAM - The funeral for David Grove Bryant Sr., 78, 12792 Franklin Turnpike, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Mike Hearp. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 27, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Floyd Bryant and Lillie Lumpkin Bryant.
On Feb. 14, 1942, he was married
to Kathleen Richardson Bryant, who survives.
He spent his life in Pittsylvania County. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Mills Inc., No. 2 Spin Schoolfield Division, as a fixer for 38 years. He was of the Holiness faith and attended Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, David G. Bryant Jr. of Dry Fork, Joel L. Bryant and Roger W. Bryant Sr., both of Danville, and Melvin R. Bryant of Martinsville; a brother, Willard Bryant of Danville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Ellen B. Robertson, and by four brothers, William Bryant, Frank Bryant, Alonza Bryant and Raymond Bryant.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Anna Foley
Anna Frances Myers Areheart Foley, 84, 2526 North Main St., died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following several years of declining health.
Born Sept. 2, 1912, in Augusta County, she was a daughter of Aubrey Myers and Alethia Hensley Myers Will.
She was first married
to H.T. Areheart, who predeceased her. She was then married
to Henderson Guy Foley, who is also deceased.
She was employed by Harnsburgers Department Store as a supervisor of the ready to wear department.
She was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Brenan Sunday school class and the Ladies Auxiliary of Lakewood Church. She was also a member of the Golden Charmers Club and the Senior Citizen's Club of Danville.
She had been a resident of the nursing home for 18 months.
She is survived by a son, Thomas Wayne Areheart of Anderson, S.C., and a foster daughter, Lucille Smith of Ringgold.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Jimmy L. Burks. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her foster daughter, 1340 Milton Hwy., off Route 58 East.
Maie Harden
Maie Roney Harden, 87, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born June 29, 1909, in Graham, N.C., she was a daughter of John William Roney and Annie Isley Roney.
She was married
to J. Turner Harden, who died Sept. 10, 1984.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as cafeteria manager for Bellevue School and Woodberry Hills School.
She was a member of the Reaching Out Circle of Kings Daughters and Sons. She was also a member of First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann H. Lockett of Danville and Betty H. Hall of Chesterfield; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight at the residence of a daughter, Ann Lockett, 114 Winthorp Drive, Danville.

Lewis Inman
Lewis Edwin Inman, 83, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 13, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Solomon Inman and Amelia Carter Inman.
He spent most of his life in Pittsylvania County and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by a brother, Joseph Solomon Inman of Danville; and two sisters, Irma I. Fuller of Westover Hills and Mary I. Wood of the Whitmell Community.
He was predeceased by a brother, Eugene Inman, and a sister, Thelma I. Lewis.

Jerome Irby
Jerome Irby, 42, 333 Audubon Drive, Apt. No. 7, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 28, 1954, in Danville, he was a son of Ira Irby and Ruth Jones Irby, who survive.
He was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. He was employed by Bassett Furniture Co. and Southside Manufacturing Co.
In addition to his parents of Danville, he is survived by his grandparents, Chris and Elnora White of Danville; two sisters, Grenda Richardson and Edna Irby, both of Danville; and four brothers, Ira Irby Jr., Lionell Irby and Winford Irby, all of Danville, and Darryl Irby of New York.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Mount Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Letcher E. Coleman. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The body may be viewed until 8 tonight at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 178 Fairlawn Drive.
