Emma Martin
ALTAVISTA - Emma Smith Martin, 91, 809 Broad St., died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born July 28, 1905, in Campbell County, she was a daughter of George Dudley Smith and Kate East Smith.
She was married
to Jessie J. Martin, who predeceased her.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Altavista and was one of the town's first beauticians.
Survivors include a daughter, Gloria M. Shelton of Gretna; four sisters, Ella S. Montgomery of New Orleans, Elsie S. Richards of Brunswick, Ga., Lena S. Brady of Miami, and Cordie S. Wrench of Lynchburg; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Finch and Finch Funeral Home Chapel in Altavista by the Rev. Latta Terry. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 203 West Watts St., Gretna.
Sherman Stanley
Sherman Fonza Stanley, 83, 28 Elizabeth St., died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following six years of declining health.
Born Sept. 21, 1913, in Dobson, N.C., he was a son of Elmer Boston Stanley and Janie Childress Stanley.
On June 27, 1936, he was married
to Louise "Becky" Huff Stanley, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he had retired from Dan River Mills Inc. in the No. 3 card room maintenance with 45 years of service. He also attended Calvary Baptist Church on Edgewood Drive.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Linda S. Cromwell of Danville and Eleanor S. Powell of Ringgold; seven sisters, Thelma Marion of Asheboro, N.C., Liza Wood, Lela Stanley, and Georgie Wood, all of Dobson, N.C., Bessie Voncannon of High Point, N.C., Viola Kinney of Archdale, N.C., and Annie Hazelwood of Elkin, N.C.; two brothers, J.C. Stanley of Thomasville, N.C., and Beachel Marion of High Point, N.C.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Cleatus Stanley and Wesley Stanley; a sister, Margie S. Giles; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Richard Markham. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, off Edgewood Drive.
Robert "Buck" Allen
Robert Clyde "Buck" Allen, 55, 208 Chatelaine Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 1997, in his residence.
Born Aug. 31, 1941, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Charlie and Ophelia Lee Allen.
He was married
to Barbara Redd Allen, who survives.
He was a member of River Zion Missionary Baptist Church and was employed by Durham Hosiery Mills Inc.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include six daughters, Georgiann A. Hairston, Sheila A. Allen and Sheila W. Jeffers, all of Danville, Vanessa D. Allen and Daisy A. Glass, both of Richmond, and Sheba J. Allen of Yakima, Wash.; a son, Robert Allen Jr. of Washington D.C.; two sisters, Linda A. Allen of Milton, N.C., and Maryum E. Shabazz of Baltimore; a brother, Philip O. Allen of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from River Zion Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Tyrone Thornton and Pastor Dorothy S. Glass. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The remains may be viewed this afternoon until 8 tonight at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at 721 Temple Avenue.
Harry Brooks
Harry Dave Brooks, 72, 231 Eastwood Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, in his residence.
Born Oct. 6, 1924, in Halifax, he was a son of George and Willie Brooks.
He was married
to Flossie Chaney Brooks, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Richard Brooks, Harry S. Brooks and Trevek Brooks, all of Danville; an adopted son, Nigel Brooks; six daughters, Joyce B. Calloway, Alesia Graham, Ruby Brooks, Tammy Deshazor and Gloria C. Williams, all of Danville, and Brenda Switzer of Newport News; a brother, John Brooks of Sutherlin; two sisters, Fannie Stephens of Danville and Harriett Burgess of Philadelphia; and 17 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted noon today from Whitestone Pentecostal Holiness Church by Bishop William Yarbrough. Burial will be in the Brooks Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Everette Harris
BROOKNEAL - Everette Clifton "Buck" Harris, 69, of Route 1, died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997, in Britthaven Nursing Home in Keysville.
Born Feb. 18, 1927, in Charlotte County, he was a son of Otha Everette Harris and Nellie Dority Harris.
He was married
to Florence St. John Harris, who predeceased him.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a saw mill supervisor.
Survivors include two sons, Everette C. Harris Jr. of Brookneal and Walter Wesley Harris of Gladys; two daughters, Nancy H. Tanksley of Sutherlin and Linda H. Powell of Brookneal; four brothers, Bobby Harris and Eddie Harris, both of Fayetteville, N.C., William Harris of Brookneal and Otha Harris Jr. of Appomattox; a sister, Shirley H. Waller of Brookneal; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday from Henderson Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. H. Clyde Crowder. Burial will be in Mount Carmel United Methodist Church cemetery.

Marie Hines
PITTSVILLE - Marie Tuck Hines, 96, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born April 15, 1900, in Bedford County, she was a daughter of Anderson B. Tuck and Emma Johnson Tuck.
She was first married
to Corbett Tuck, who predeceased her. She was then married
to Stonewall Jackson "Jack" Hines.
She was a member of Summersett Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by a son, Ray Calvin Hines; a daughter, Betty Lee Hines; and three grandchildren.
Survivors include seven sons, A.J. Hines of Pittsville, Ralph Junior Hines of Madison Heights, Wallace Odell Hines of Roanoke, Ben Allen Hines of Ridgeway, Sherman Wayne Hines and Richard Donald Hines, both of Hurt, and John William Hines of Martinsville; two daughters, Faye Hines Johnson of Hurt and Mary Pauline Tuck Knight of Madison, N.C.; a foster son, Jesse Lee Tate of Greensboro, N.C.; 41 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Summersett Baptist Church by the Rev. Bert Johnson and the Rev. John Belderes. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Buddy Hobbs Sr.
GRIFFIN, Ga. - Buddy Lee Hobbs Sr., 52, 142 Second Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, in the V.A. Hospital in Decatur.
Born in Danville, Va., he was a son of James Hobbs and Beatrice Worley Hobbs.
He was married
to Margaret Wolfe Hobbs, who survives.
As a child, he lived at the Faith Home in Blairs, Va., for a short period of time.
During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a charter member of American Legion Post No. 33 in Stockbridge. He was also a representative with the Georgia Department of Veterans.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Michelle L. Holleman of Griffin; a son, Buddy Lee Hobbs Jr. of Griffin; three sisters, Elizabeth Hobbs Turner of Danville, Va., Betty Jean Hobbs Hartman of Sterling, Va., and Judy Hobbs Smith of Mooresville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at McCullough Funeral Home Chapel in Griffin. Burial was held in Westwood Gardens cemetery in Griffin.
Dorothy Johnson
Dorothy Fitzgerald Johnson, 75, 600 Main St., died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 4, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of George Warren Fitzgerald and Carrie Price Fitzgerald.
She was married
to Leon Johnson, who predeceased her.
Survivors include a brother, Robert L. Fitzgerald of Danville; and two sisters, Bessie F. Bailey and Catherine F. Holt, both of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Anthony J. Noble. Burial will be in Cunningham and Hughes Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Holt, 1512 Mount Cross Road.

Nannie Richardson
RINGGOLD - Nannie Etta Simmons Richardson, 74, 3731 South Boston Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following a month of declining health.
Born April 15, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John B. Simmons and Mary Sue Alderson Simmons.
On Nov. 24, 1943, she was married
to Norman William Richardson, who died Aug. 10, 1978.
She spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County, where she was a homemaker. She was also a member of The Tabernacle.
Survivors include two sons, Norman W. "Bud" Richardson Jr. and Joseph "Joe" Odell Richardson, both of Ringgold; a daughter, Norma Jean R. Howell of Ringgold; a sister, Nellie Etta S. Vernon of Ringgold; and two grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, John Eddie Simmons and Charlie B. Simmons; and a sister, Evelyn S. Guill.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, on Route 58 East.
