Margaret Stone
Margaret Lee Stone, 55, 100 Front St., died Friday, Jan. 10, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 31, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Buck Mars and Annie Morton.
She was married
to John A. Stone, who survives.
She was employed by Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute as a nurse's aide. She was also a member of New Mine Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a son, Floyd Stone of Danville; a daughter, Donna Cunningham of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Willie Mars of New York; two sisters, Ozela Luck of Danville and Ruby Mars of the residence; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from New Mine Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mildred Arthur
Mildred Hall Cury Arthur, 80, 251 Allison Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, in her sister's residence.
Born June 28, 1916, in Virginia City, she was a daughter of John Hall and Lola Leedy Hall.
She was first married
to Thomas B. Cury, who predeceased her. She was later married
to James T. Arthur, who also predeceased her.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a buyer for Rippe's. She had lived in Danville since 1961, but spent most of her life in Neon, Ky.
She was a member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church, the Robinson Bennett Chapter of Eastern Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxillary Post No. 647.
Survivors include a sister, Mabel H. Kilgore of Danville; and three brothers, John D. Hall of San Diego, Roy Hall of Whitesburg and Jim Hall of Norton.
She was also predeceased by a sister, Margaret H. Reasor; and a brother, Bobby E. Hall.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Richard Cobb and Dr. Woodrow Giles. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Norton.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
William Barber
William Edward Barber, 83, 103 Milford Place, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following two months of declining health.
Born Sept. 15, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Henry Barber and Cora Walden Barber.
He spent his entire life in the Danville area, where he was employed by Dan River Inc.
He is survived by three sisters, Estelle Norton, Doris Lewis and Mozelle Hawker, all of Danville; and two brothers, Perry Barber and Clarence Barber, both of Danville.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Dewey Barber and James Barber.
A cryptside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of a brother, Perry Barber, 1463 Claiborne St.
Sallie Carr
ALTAVISTA - Sallie Martin Carr, 67, Route 2, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, in Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born Feb. 24, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Jerry Arthur Martin and Josephine Davis Martin.
She was married
to John Thomas Carr, who survives.
She was a homemaker and a member of Staunton Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include 10 daughters, Ivory Martin of Gladys, Louise Hall of Long Island, Barbara Martin and Fannie Graves, both of Hurt, Gayle Alexander and Charlene Carr, both of Altavista, Cathy Carr of Evington, Brenda Carr of Lynchburg, Dawn Carr of Brookneal and Hattie Clark of Lynch Station; a son, Andrew Martin of Gladys; two sisters, Yomie Stone of Long Island and Carrie Martin of Gretna; four brothers, Jimmie Lee Martin and William Martin, both of Gretna, Ellis Martin of Long Island and Roy Martin of Danville; 25 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Staunton Baptist Church in Long Island by the Rev. P.A. Medley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Nancy Collins
Dora "Nancy" Scearce Collins, 78, 128 Cooper St., died Wednesday Jan. 15, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center, following six years of declining health.
Born Oct. 14, 1918, in Danville, she was a daughter of Floyd T. Scearce Sr. and Hester Shumate Scearce.
On Jan. 24, 1939, she was married
to Kermit L. Collins, who survives.
She spent her entire life in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River Mills Inc. until her retirement. She was also a member of Third Avenue Christian Church.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three brothers, Paul C. Scearce, Floyd T. Scearce Jr. and Earl R. Scearce, all of Danville; and three sisters, Geneva S. Owen and Lela Cowan Ashley, both of Danville, and Lois S. Watlington of Dry Fork.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Freddy J. Vicks.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Percy Hamlett
The funeral for Percy Hamlett, 68, 604 Fairhaven Circle, will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Judy Fallen. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
He died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997, in his residence.
Born Dec. 10, 1928, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Ollie and Fidelia Bradsher Hamlett.
He was married
to Minnie Davis Hamlett, who survives.
He was employed by Lorillard Tobacco Company.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include three daughters, Leslie Hamlett of Ashboro, N.C., Teresa Hamlett of Falls Church and Joella Stewart of Milton, N.C.; three sons, Michael Hamlett of Florida, Charles Hamlett of Craigsville and Junior Farmer of Milton, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Phyllis Cain of Staten Island, N.Y., Elois Pointer and Doretha Thomas, both of Danville; two stepsons, Edward Thomas and Caleb Thomas, both of Danville; and two sisters, Susie Farmer and Lucy Saxon, both of Danbury, Conn.
The remains may be viewed until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Jeanne Johns
RICHMOND - Jeanne Marie Johns, 72, formerly of Danville, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997.
Born July 19, 1924, in Manhattan, N.Y., she was a daughter of William E. Gross and Dorothy Kelly Gross.
During the early part of her life, she was employed as a registered nurse in New York. For several years, she volunteered at Sacred Heart School. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Danville Register & Bee in the circulation department.
Survivors include two sons, Richard A. Johns of Sanford, N.C., and Kevin F. Johns of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Karen Johns Crowther of the Northern Neck; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Danville by the Rev. David McGuire. A graveside service will be held immediately following the funeral in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends after the graveside service at the residence of Elsie C. Slayton, 120 Cambridge Circle, Danville.
Queenie Moss
Queenie Clark Moss, 95, 3920 Westover Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following seven years of declining health.
Born Dec. 10, 1901, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of Robert Franklin Clark and Martha Turner Clark.
She was married
to James Thomas Ralph Moss, who died March 4, 1991.
She had lived in the Danville area for the past 80 years. Prior to her retirement at age 62, she was employed by Dan River Mills for 45 years.
She was a charter member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, T.E. "Gene" Moss of Danville; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David R. Turbyfill and the Rev. Matthew Pacifico. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Edith Newell
LEXINGTON - Edith Mae Clark Newell, 90, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 27, 1906, in Rockbridge County, she was a daughter of Taylor Clark and Hessie Brads Clark.
She was married
to James Samuel Newell, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Collierstown Baptist Church in Lexington.
Survivors include four daughters, Juanita N. Carter of Roanoke, Phyllis N. Strange of Danville, Roberta N. Hockman and Betty Ann Newell, both of Lexington; two sons, Wayne Lee Newell and Malcolm "Mack" Newell, both of Lexington; a sister, Beulah C. Davis of Lexington; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, J. Lloyd Newell.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Harrison Funeral Home Chapel, Lexington, by the Rev. Mike Fritts and the Rev. Ralph Vanness. Burial will be in Stonewall Jackson cemetery, Lexington.
