'Bill' Haulsee
William Monroe "Bill" Haulsee, 75, of 115 Nor Dan Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, at his home.
Born March 2, 1921, in Attaway, he was a son of Curtis M. Haulsee and Sophronia Watson Haulsee.
He lived in Glasgow, W.Va., before moving to Danville in 1969. He retired from Appalachian Power Co. as regional chief operator after 35 years of service.
He was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army 41st Coast Artillery, Battery A, at Pearl Harbor. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. For 52 years, he was a member of the American Legion, where he first served his hometown Post No. 18, of Marion. He was an honorary life member of Post No. 325. He had been commander of both posts, and was an active member of the Post No. 325 Honor Guard. He held state and national appointments, including Veteran's Affairs Rehab. He was also a member of VFW, Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647.
On Sept. 21, 1946, he was married
to Olivene Virginia Haulsee, who died Sept. 28, 1990.
Survivors include two sons, Barry Dwayne Haulsee of the residence and Larry W. Haulsee of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Roger Haulsee of Marion; a sister, Sadie H. Pafford of Abingdon; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. George Rumney and the Rev. William C. Taylor. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times will be at the residence.
Bessie Lynch
Bessie Meador Lynch, 94, died Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 10, 1902, at "Hillview" in Franklin County, she was a daughter of James M. Meador and Sarah Plunkett Meador.
She was educated at Longwood College and Radford College. She taught school in Pittsylvania County, including Brosville High School.
She had been a volunteer with the American Red Cross.
Her husband was the Rev. George C. Lynch, who died in 1970.
Survivors include a daughter, Bebe Lynch Smyka of Danville; a son, George C. Lynch of Flint, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Plunkett Family cemetery, Franklin County, by the Rev. Dr. David Speering.
The family will receive friends 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Funeral Home, and other times will be at the home of her daughter, Bebe Smyka, 456 Brightwell Drive.
Samuel Norton
Samuel F. Norton, 67, of Danville, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, at Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Born June 3, 1929, in Danville, he was a son of Elish P. Norton and Ollie May Hicks Norton.
He spent his entire life in Danville, where he was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church. He had been recovering from a stroke at the home of his nephew, R. Nick Bishop.
He was deaf since birth and attended the School for the Deaf in Staunton.
He was married
to Gertrude Waldron Norton, who died July 21, 1993.
Survivors include a sister, Gladys Norton Bishop of Portsmouth.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lee Ellison. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 Tuesday night at Barker Funeral Home.
Blanche Shelley
MECHANICSBURG, PA. - Blanche R. Shelley, 76, of 1051 Avila Road, Lower Paxton Township, died Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 1997, in Villa Teresa Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 23, 1920, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Wlliam H. and Florence Clark Gilbert.
She was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mechanicsburg. At the time of her death, she was a member of Blessed Katherine Drexel Catholic Church.
She was formerly employed by Holy Spirit Hospital, E. Pennsboro Township.
She was married
to Matthew M. Shelley, who predeceased her.
Survivors include four sons, Matthew M. Shelley of Langhorne; B. Joseph Shelley of Maplewood, N.J.; James T. Shelley of Sioux City, Iowa; and William P. Shelley of Gaithersburg, Md.; two daughters, Ann S. Whitcomb and Mary C. Eberly both of Mechanicsburg; one sister, Dorothy Jefferson of Danville, Va.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A mass of christian burial will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday at her church by Father James R. O'Brien.
The viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Myers Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg. A prayer service will begin at 8:45 p.m.
Burial will be in Chestnut Hill cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
Clifford Taylor
SUTHERLIN - Clifford Clay Taylor, 65, of 156 McNeely Lane, died Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 1997, at his residence. He had been in declining health since December.
Born May 2, 1931, in Semora, N.C., he was the son of Wonnie E. Taylor and Bessie Goff Land. He spent most of his life in the Danville area. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by E and M Express Trucking Co. as a driver.
He was married
to Verdie Payne Taylor, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include one son, Emory A. Taylor of Douglasville, Ga.; one daughter, Janet Taylor Jones of Sutherlin; one brother, Lawrence J. Land of Atlanta; one sister, Lizzie T. Phillips of Burkeville; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Jerry Joseph. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times will be at the residence.
H. Dudley Williams
RINGGOLD - H. Dudley Williams, 83, of 3405 Kentuck Road, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for several months.
Born April 17, 1912, in Sutherlin, he was a son of Benjamin Williams and Mary Burton Williams.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County, where he was a farmer and worked 47 years for Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co. He was educated in the county school system and earned his bachelor's degree from Randolph Macon College.
He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and an assistant Sunday school teacher.
He was first married
to Martha Collie Williams, who died in 1964.
He later was married
to Garland Crane Williams, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Susan Gosney of Route 3, Danville, Martha Ann Rhodes of Glouchester, Mary Ellen Stokes of Roanoke and Dudley Leigh Fairchild of Lynchburg; one brother, Phillip Williams of Sutherlin; three sisters, Mary W. Powell and Nettie Williams both of Danville, and Maude W. Edmunds of Gretna; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kentuck Baptist Church by the Rev. David Henry. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Kentuck Baptist Church, and other times will be at the residence.
Kathie White
Kathie Sue Gosney White, 44, 528 Woodlawn Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.
Born Sept. 7, 1952, in Danville, she was a daughter of Hugh N. Gosney and Gloria Dalton Gosney, who survives.
On Sept. 20, 1970, she was married
to Jimmie William White, who survives.
She spent all of her life on Woodlawn Drive in Danville.
In 1970, she graduated from Tunstall High School. She was employed by Coates Elementary School in the cafeteria for 12 years.
She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, where she worked in the nursery and taught pre-school Sunday school class for several years. She was also a member of the Ladies Ensemble in the church.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Jeffrey William White of Pelham, N.C., and Joseph Wade White of Danville; and a sister, Bonnie Gosney of Morrow Bay, Calif.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Woodlawn Baptist Church by the Rev. William C. Blalock and the Rev. Fredrick J. Vicks. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Richard Arthur
Richard Charles Arthur, 92, formerly of Piney Forest Health Care Center, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 1, 1904, in Halifax County, he was a son of Robert Lee Arthur and Mary Thomas Arthur.
He was first married
to Janie Hubbard Arthur, who died Jan. 16, 1991. He was later married
to Virginia Folden Arthur, who also predeceased him.
Survivors include a son, Richard Charles Arthur Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla.; three daughters, Elon Kennedy and Peggie Hicks, both of Danville, and Shelly Harris of Ringgold; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service was conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, in Danville Memorial Gardens.
Edward Childress
RINGGOLD - Edward Woodrow Childress, 82, 140 Echo Lane, died Monday, Jan. 20, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following a year of declining health.
Born Dec. 20, 1914, in Halifax County, he was a son of Letcher Edward Childress and Lottie Ann New Childress.
On June 2, 1936, he was married
to Dorothy Thompson Childress, who died May 15, 1995.
He spent most of his life in the Ringgold community of Pittsylvania County. After 35 years of service, he retired from Natkin & Co. Mechanical Contractors as a supervisor. He was a member of Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church and Mortock No. 210 Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include a daughter, Ramona C. Staton of Ringgold; a son, David W. Childress of Colonial Heights; a brother, Junior Childress of Reidsville, N.C.; three sisters, Evelyn C. Durham of Reidsville, Louise C. Deaton and Anna Bell C. Reed, both of Danville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from Lakewood Evangelical Methodist Church by the Rev. Jimmy L. Burks. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
