Henry Bass
Henry Carlton Bass, 74, formerly of Hillcrest Avenue, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997, in the Veteran's Hospital in Salem. He had been in declining health for several years.
Born Aug. 3, 1922, in Halifax County, he was a son of Nathan D. Bass and Mae Nonie Bass Bass.
He spent most of his life in Halifax and Pittsylvania counties. He was employed by the Virginia National Guard before serving in the War Department Military Intelligence Division of the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church, and was a life member of American Legion Post No. 1097 and Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include a sister, Edith Bass Williams of Danville.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. John T. Young.

Hubert 'Red' Clark
Hubert Carlton "Red" Clark, 82, of 150 Westmoreland Court, Apt. 1, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997, at his home.
Born May 15, 1914, in Danville, he was a son of Montilla Clark and Ella Green Crawley Clark.
In 1936, he was married
to Mildred Bailey Clark.
He retired from Dan River Inc. after 43 years. He was a member of Kiwanis Club of Danville, and was a member of First Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth C. Jenkins of Dallas and Suzanne C. Johnson of Richmond; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church by Rodney Beals. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

William 'Sonny' Collins Jr.
The funeral for William Oscar "Sonny" Collins Jr., 70, 1166 Burton Drive, will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. T. Anthony Pollard. Interment
will be in Mountain View cemetery.
He died Friday, Jan. 24, 1996, at his residence after a decline in health of 21/2 years.
Born Sept. 28, 1926, he was the son of William Oscar Collins Sr. and Nora Gibson Collins.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Philippines and Japan.
He spent his life in Danville, where he worked for the A&P grocery store for 39 years as a clerk and manager.
He was a member of First Christian Church, where he had served as a deacon, trustee, maintenance worker, and treasurer of the Sunday school class.
His wife was Mildred Sours Collins.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one sister, Aliene Collins of Danville.
He was predeceased by one brother, A. Luther Collins; and two sisters, Katherine Collins Jones, and Mary Ann Collins.
The family will receive friends at the residence in Westover Hills.
'Bob' Gardner
Master Sgt. Earl E. "Bob" Gardner, USMC retired, 72, of 1425 Kemper Road, died Sunday morning, Jan. 26, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 27, 1924, in Newport News, he was a son of Willie Carroll Gardner and Lottie Temple Gardner.
He was married
to Shirley Gupton Gardner, who survives.
He moved to Danville after retiring from the U.S. Marines after 23 years of service. He had worked part-time as a salesman for Murphy Motor Co. Inc., and was a member of Westover Baptist Church.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include two daughters, Deborah Jefferson and Cynthia Carter both of Danville; three sons, Charles Dean Gupton of Greensboro, N.C., Michael Wayne Gupton of Dry Fork and James Dwight Gupton of Danville; one sister, Geraldine Stewart of Danville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

J. Harold Herndon
The funeral for J. Harold Herndon, 81, 16260 Franklin Turnpike, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swansonville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Carty, Rev. Linwood Daniel, and Rev. Hylton Lawrence Jr. Interment
will be in the church cemetery.
He died Saturday, Jan. 25, 1997, at his residence. He had been in declining health for four years.
Born Feb. 14, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Leonard H. Herndon Sr. and Lucy Martin Herndon.
He spent his entire life in the Swansonville community, and was a member of Swansonville United Methodist Church.
For more than 40 years, he worked in the weave room and as a loom fixer at Dan River Inc.
He was a member of the Dan River Retirees Club.
He was married
to L.Z. Holley Herndon, who died July 25, 1992.
Survivors include two sons, Douglas Wayne Herndon of Dry Fork, and Harold Dwight Herndon of Danville; seven daughters, Gereline H. Kendrick of Chatham, Eliza H. Rowland, Dorothy L. Aaron, June H. Tate and Wendy C. Haymore, all of Danville, Judy H. Snead of Brosville, and Frances H. Fitzpatrick of Chesapeake; four brothers, L.H. "Len" Herndon and E. Eugene Herndon, both of Dry Fork, Carroll Herndon of Danville, and Malcolm Herndon of Georgia; four sisters, Alma H. Wright and Blanche H. Holley, both of Dry Fork, Barbara H. Gerry of South Carolina, and Rebecca H. Mumpower of Georgia; 20 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, three step grandchildren and four stegreat-grandchildren.
He was precedeased by one brother, Orville Herndon; and one sister, Doris Reynolds.

Charlie Jones
CHATHAM - Elder Charlie J. Jones, 73, of 216 Collie St., died Friday, Jan. 24, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 16, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charlie Jones and Elizabeth Jones Moore.
He was married
to Angerline Jones, who is predeceased.
He was a member of Little Mount Zion Holiness Church and was a retired employee of Ennis Business Forms and Chatham Oil Co.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include three sons, James H. Jones of Danville, Charles H. Jones of Chatham and Clarence E. Jones of Forestville, Md.; one daughter, Evangeline Jones of Danville; a half-brother, James Moore of Charlotte, N.C.; a half-sister, Margie Robertson of Danville; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday from Little Mount Zion Pentecostal Holiness Church by Elder Mandoria Hayes. Interment
will be in Fairview Church cemetery.

Rachel S. Wilkerson
The funeral for Rachel Shelton Wilkerson, 53, of 501 Pruitt Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Louis Emerson. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
She died Saturday morning, Jan. 25, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a two-year decline in health.
Born Feb. 19, 1943, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the Rev. Charlie M. Shelton and Beulah Rowland Shelton.
She was married
to Roy James Wilkerson, who survives.
She was a graduate of Halifax County High School, and lived in Danville the past 35 years. She was also an inspector for Durham Hosiery for 18 years, and retired on disability in 1995.
She was a member of Faith Church of the Holiness, where she played the piano.
In addition to her parents of Ringgold and her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Deborah Doss Motley and Teresa Doss Snead, both of Danville; two sons, Owen Ray Doss of Danville, and Steven Anthony Doss of the residence; three stepdaughters, Wanda Wilkerson Cain of Whitmell, June Wilkerson Martin of South Boston, and Jennifer Wilkerson Jones of Blairs; two stepsons, James V. Wilkerson and Jerry L. Wilkerson, both of Danville; nine grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Dorothy Gunnell
Dorothy Murphy Gunnell, 76, 149 Fairfield Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 14, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Alfred Brown Murphy and Ida Robertson Murphy.
On July 14, 1945, she was married
to Lynwood Norris Gunnell, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville and was self-employed as a sitter. She was also a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
In addition her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Frankie W. Gunnell of Ringgold and Jeffrey L. Gunnell of Brosville; a sister, Lucy M. Fowlkes of Tightsqueeze; two brothers, Carroll Murphy of Danville and Willard Murphy of Dry Fork; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Clifton Murphy, and by a sister, Effie M. Crane.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Louis A. Martin and the Rev. Fletcher Hardy. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of a son, Frankie Gunnell, 537 Kentuck Church Road, Ringgold.
Lettie Hanks
Lettie E. McKee Hanks, 73, 764 Arnett Blvd., died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 2, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of George McKee and Lillian Howard McKee.
She was married
to Elijah Jarod Hanks, who died July 2, 1976.
She was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include three sons, Larry Hanks and Donnie Hanks, both of Danville, and Gary Hanks of the residence; two stepsons, Edward Hanks and Eugene Hanks, both of Danville; three brothers, David McKee and Oscar McKee, both of Danville, and Ralph McKee of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ronald Smith and the Rev. Buddy Warren. Burial will be in the Hanks Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
