Alpha Hardy
HILLSVILLE - Alpha Bowman Hardy, 85, died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997, in Elder Care Center.
Born Aug. 27, 1911, she was a native of Patrick County.
She was married
to David Hardy, who predeceased her.
She lived in the Schoolfield section of Danville. She was employed by Dan River Mills in the No. 5 Sewing Room for 41 years. She was also a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Bobbie Copeland of Hillsville; a stepdaughter, Christine Bowman of Claudesville; a sister, Vergie Hall of Danville; three grandchildren; three step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a stepson, Henry "Jack" Hardy.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from First United Methodist Church in Hillsville by the Rev. Nathan Malone. Burial will be in Wilkinson Memorial cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at First United Methodist Church, and other times at 202 Harmon St., Hillsville.

Olga Heard
Major Olga S. Heard, 84, died Friday, Jan. 24, 1997, in Presbyterian Hospital of Aurora, Colo.
Born March 21, 1912, in Danville, she was a daughter of J. Bryant Heard and Bernice Sheppard Heard.
She was retired from the United States Army and had been a resident of Colorado for the past few years.
She is survived by a sister, Alice H. Warden of Long Island, N.Y.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Richard Cobb.

Mary Keen
HAMPTON - Mary J. Tuck Keen, 92, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1997.
A native of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Jessie Hare Keen Jr. and Nannie E. Keen.
She had been a Virginia Peninsula resident for 47 years. Prior to her retirement in 1980, she was employed by Hampton General Hospital as a L.P.N. for 29 years.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints. She was also a member of Order of Eastern Star No. 40, Colonial Chapter.
Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Morris of Gretna, Nancy Nichols of Southport, N.C., and Doris L. Hodge of Hampton; her foster daughter, Roxie L. LaCrox of Checoque, Mass.; three sons, Clyde A. Tuck of Gretna, A.K. "Bobby" Tuck of Jacksonville, Fla., and David E. Tuck of Salmon, Idaho; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
An Order of Eastern Star service will be held 7 tonight at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News. The family will receive friends following the service until 8:30 p.m.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints, in Poquoson, by Bishop Dale Smith. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Carrett Adkins Sr.
The funeral for Carrett Darcell Adkins Sr., 92, 197 North Ave., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Ira Yeatts and the Rev. Ronald Smith. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Aug. 24, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Beverly Adkins and Pearlie Parker Adkins.
He was first married
to Bertha Doss, who died Dec. 15, 1976. On Dec. 22, 1979, he was married
to Vivian Pruett Adkins, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, but had been a resident of the nursing home for the past two years.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Mills Inc. in the maintenance department for many years.
He also attended Church of Truth.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Mary A. Herndon of Franklin Springs, Ga., and Barbara A. Holley and Jean A. Foster, both of Danville; a stepson, Melvin Adams Jr. of Danville; two stepdaughters, Delores C. Wilson of Danville and Peggy C. Creasey of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Alma A. Hunt of Danville; a brother, John Adkins of Pelham, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by two sons, C.D. Adkins Jr. and James Noel Adkins.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, Barbara A. Holley, 1140 Ridgecrest Drive, Danville, and at his residence.
John Atkins
John Robert Atkins, 67, 1560 Washington St., died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, in his residence.
Born March 13, 1929, in Franklin County, he was a son of George Atkins and Emma Holley Atkins.
He had lived in Danville since 1977 and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by three sisters, Florence Bolling of Danville, Hazel Shively of Bassett and Mildred Eanes of Martinsville.
A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Gilmore Hundley.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a sister, Florence Bolling, 1550 Washington St., Danville.

Elosie Calloway
The funeral for Elosie Frances Elliott Calloway, 85, of Riverside Health Care Center, will be conducted 4 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Jack Robertson. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
She died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.
Born June 3, 1911, in Danville, she was a daughter of George Thomas Elliott and Melissa Ann Mills Elliott.
On Nov. 21, 1924, she was married
to Young G. Calloway, who died Dec. 15, 1985.
She spent most of her life in Pittsylvania County and Grayson County. She was a member of Pine Mountain Pentecostal Holiness Church.
For several years, she was employed by Dan River Mills Inc. in the No. 1 Card Room, Schoolfield Division. She also worked with her husband, operating the former Calloway Grocery Store on Vandola Road.
Survivors include two sons, George M. Calloway and Atron Thomas Calloway, both of Danville; two daughters, Evon C. Gosney of Danville and Faye C. Bailey of Denton, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Lettie May Calloway.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her sons, George M. Calloway, 126 Elliott St., and Atron T. Calloway, 135 Brush Arbor Court, off Mount Cross Road.
Roger Clardy
AXTON - Roger Preston Clardy, 73, 5181 Medical Center Road, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been a patient at the hospital since Dec. 27, 1996, and in declining health since 1993.
Born Sept. 13, 1923, in Halifax County, he was a son of John Preston Clardy and Fannie Whitlow Clardy.
He was married
to Nancy Smith Clardy, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in central Europe, and was a member of the 101st Calvary Division.
He had lived in the Axton community for the past 60 years. He was a farmer and a self-employed carpenter and cabinet maker. He was also of the Presbyterian faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Preston G. Clardy of Axton; a sister, Kate C. Scruggs of Chatham; a brother, John P. Clardy of Ringgold; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Eunice Clardy and Thelma Clardy.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert Carty and Dr. David J. Palmer. Burial will be in Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his son, 5209 Medical Center Road, Axton.
Billy Francis
BLAIRS - Billy Ray Francis, 40, 5553 29 North, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in his residence.
Born July 18, 1956, in Danville, he was a son of Beulah Bray Francis, who survives, and Clarence William Francis.
On April 16, 1976, he was married
to Patricia Hatchett Francis, who survives.
He was a member of Blairs Baptist Church, a charter member of Blairs Volunteer Fire Department, and a former member of Danville Life Saving Crew. He was also a fire lieutenant for the City of Danville Fire Department. He taught fire fighting classes for the State of Virginia Department of Fire Programs. He was also president of Danville Professional Firefighters Association and a member of Pittsylvania County Fire and Rescue Association.
He held an associate's degree from Northern Virginia Community College in fire science and was a member of the first graduating class in the city of Danville.
In addition to his mother of Ringgold and his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Donna Marie Francis, Jennifer Lynn Francis, and Cheryl Nicole Francis, all of the residence; three sisters, Diana Gunnell and Tammy Edwards, both of Ringgold, and Betty Francis of Alexandria; and a brother, David Francis of Blairs.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Luther Lemon. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Thelma Green
RICHMOND - The funeral for Thelma Lee Hambrick Green, 87, will be conducted 10 a.m. today from First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 828 Buford Road. Burial will be 4 p.m. today in Dry Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church, Dry Fork.
She died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 1997, in her residence, following a lengthy illness.
She was a native of Roanoke.
For 59 years, she was married
to the Rev. W. Julius Green, who survives.
She attended Memphis State University and the University of Tennessee. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Miller & Rhoads.
For 42 years, she was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she served as choir member, Sunday school teacher, and youth counselor.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Donald Reeves Green and Douglas Lee Green; three sisters, Blanche Hudgins and Helen Gearheat of Roanoke, and Ellen Williams of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
