Duke Motley
CHATHAM - Duke Sterlin Motley, 82, 796 Motley Road, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born May 26, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Leslie B. Motley and Pattie Shelton Motley.
He was married
to Bevelene Furrow Motley, who survives.
He was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Galen D. Motley and Byron D. Motley, both of Chatham; three sisters, Charlotte Motley of Chatham, Claris M. Austin of Englewood, N.J., and Shirley Motley of Danville; and two brothers, Cecil B. Motley of Gretna and Herman D. Motley of Chatham.
He was predeceased by a sister, Bernice M. Issacs.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. James Bullock. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Laura Nichols
HURT - Laura Blanks Nichols, 23, 748 Jasper Wood Road, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997.
Born June 12, 1973, in South Boston, she was a daughter of Richard B. Blanks Jr. and Connie Fisher Blanks, who survive.
She was married
to Chad S. Nichols, who survives.
She attended Greenbay Christian Church. She was employed by Timberlake Family Practice as a receptionist.
In addition to her parents of Lynch Station and her husband of the residence, survivors include a brother, Thomas Ashley Blanks of Hurt; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Fisher of Nathalie; her maternal stepgreat-grandmother, Dorothy Fisher of South Boston; and her paternal grandmother, Althea Blanks of Richmond.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Greenbay Christian Church by the Rev. Rudy Hearn and the Rev. Larry Mullholand. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna, and other times at the residence of her parents, Route 1, Box 309A, Lynch Station.
Garland Pollard
The funeral for Garland Fred Pollard, 74, 803 Sixth Street, will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Steve Lamb and the Rev. C.L. Walker. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following 15 years of declining health.
Born Feb. 4, 1922, in Wythe County, he was a son of Grover Pollard and Myrle Holbrook Pollard.
He was married
to Helen Hudson Pollard, who survives.
He had lived in Danville for the past 54 years. Prior to his retirement at age 57, he was employed by Dan River Mills in the No. 8 Finishing Room as an oversear for 38 years.
He attended Brush Arbor Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Joan Spicer of Danville; two sons, Fredrick Allen Pollard of the residence and Donald Clifton Pollard of Kernsville, N.C.; two sisters, Mae Barnes of Danville and Ruth Parks of Elk Creek; six brothers, Frank Pollard and Paul Pollard, both of Baywood, Gene Pollard and Earl Pollard, both of Elk Creek, Fielder Pollard and Wade Pollard, both of Oxford, Pa.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by a son, Walter Garland Pollard, who died in 1959.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Loyd Simmons
KEELING - The funeral for Loyd Thomas Simmons, 91, 11644 Old Richmond Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by Elder Danny Parker and the Rev. Tom Erwin. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
He died Thursday, Jan. 30, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following one month of declining health.
Born Aug. 27, 1905, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Tom Simmons and Mary Elizabeth Lewis Simmons.
On Nov. 9, 1929, he was married
to Addie Davis Simmons, who survives.
He spent his entire life in the Keeling community.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Mills Inc., No. 4B Weave Room, Schoolfield Division. He then worked at the Dan River Cannery.
He was a member of Old Mill Primitive Baptist Church and also attended Oak Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, F.Thomas Simmons of Danville; three daughters, Annie Mae S. Lester, NancyS. Ingram, and Willie Pansy S. Aherron, all of Keeling; a brother, WeldonSimmons of Keeling; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers and five sisters.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, andother times at the residence of a daughter, Willie Pansy Aherron, 13172Old Richmond Road, on Route 360, Keeling.
Garnett Matherly
Garnett Motley Matherly, 80, 224 Courtland St., Apt. 223, died Monday, Jan. 27, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following six months of declining health.
Born Oct. 29, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Dan C. Motley and Rosie Bowling Motley.
She spent most of her life in Reidsville, N.C., but had lived in Danville for the last 10 years. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Mills.
She was a member of College Park Baptist Church. She was an active resident of Holiday Village.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond Saunders of Florida and Wayne Saunders of Dry Fork; a daughter, Eloise Hill of Penhook; four brothers, Archie Motley of Danville, Percy Motley and Calvin Motley, both of Dry Fork, and Paul Motley of Salem; two sisters, Pauline Holland of Dry Fork and Sally Savage of Danville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Wade Eanes
GRETNA - Wade Owen Eanes, 68, of 6361 W. Gretna Road, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born Feb. 25, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Richard Lee Eanes and Mary Atkinson Eanes.
He was retired from G.E., and was a lay minister and Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a member of Gideons and a member of Piney Fork Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Howell Eanes, of the residence; one daughter, Sandra Gibson of Hurt; three sisters, Katie Bishop of Gretna, Eudora Roach of Panama City, Fla., Ruth Johnson of Wilmington, N.C.; and one grandson.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Roy Eanes, Coleman Eanes, Clifton Eanes, Lukin Eanes, Fred Eanes, Paul Eanes; and one sister, Georgia Eanes Waller.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday at Piney Fork Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe Glass, the Rev. A.A. Blanks and the Rev. David R. Turbyfill. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.

Dorothy Graham
The funeral for Dorothy Earles Graham, 74, formerly of 158 Greensboro Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Claude R. Graham and the Rev. Joe Willis. Interment
will be in Oakwood cemetery, Martinsville.
She died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a decline in health since 1990. She had lived at Roman Eagle since April 1996.
Born Feb. 19, 1922, in High Point, N.C., she was a daughter of Ira W. Earles and Mary Weddle Earles.
On Sept. 12, 1946, she was married
to the Rev. Claude R. Graham, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a bookkeeper. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in South Boston.
In addition to her husband of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, survivors include a brother, Wilford W. Earles of Arlington, and a foster sister, Shelby Shaw of Chesapeake.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times will be at the home of her niece, Trudi Griffin, 321 Taylor St., Apt. No. 1.
Tommie Hill
The graveside service for Tommie Cleveland Hill, 67, of 2020 Carter St., will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Highland Burial Park. Graveside military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 325 Honor Guard.
He died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, at his home.
Born March 28, 1929, in Danville, he was a former member of VFW Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647 and the Moose Lodge. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Toby Carter and Shelby Hill, both of Danville; and five grandchildren.

Virginia Latner
The funeral for Virginia Smith Latner, 75, of Riverside Health Care Center, will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Green Hill cemetery by the Rev. Ron Mateer.
She died Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.
Born Feb. 22, 1921, in Martinsville, she was a daughter of James Stafford Smith and Aggie Moore Smith.
She was married
to Max Latner, who died Oct. 5, 1995.
She lived in Greesboro, N.C., before moving to Danville. She was a homemaker, and of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Wann Bradsher of Danville, and Charlotte Wann Peeler of Rossville, Ga.; a half-sister, Treva Clardy of Martinsville; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, James H. "Buck" Smith Sr.

Kathleen Moore
Kathleen Davis Moore, 92, of 2715 Westover Dr., died Sunday morning, Feb. 2, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 6, 1904, in Danville, she was a daughter of T.J.J. Davis and Annie Wayland Davis.
On June 18, 1938, she was married
to E.L. Moore, who survives.
She was a homemaker and a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a brother, T.J.J. Davis Jr. of Eatonton, Ga.
The graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. in Leemont cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans and the Rev. Larry Edmonds.
