Calvin Farmer
A graveside service for Calvin Mark Farmer, 87, formerly of Parkway Drive, was conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Dr. Charles Scearce.
He died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, in Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 31, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Mark A. Farmer and Bettie Hunt Farmer.
He was married
to Dora Carter Farmer, who died Dec. 30, 1969.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He lived on Parkway Drive in Danville from 1947 until 1981. He was employed as a carpenter for many years, traveling with various union jobs. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Hankins Hudgins of Danville; two sisters, Susie A. Farmer and Toye G. Leigh, both of Danville; a brother, Aubrey G. Farmer of Westover Hills; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 131 Mary Miles Drive, Danville.

Edna Hayes
Edna May Lowe Hayes, 65, 255 Eastwood Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center, following several years of declining health.
Born May 3, 1931, in Charleston, S.C., she was a daughter of William Benny Lowe and Estie Elliott Lowe.
She was married
to William Odell Hayes, who died in 1972.
She was a housewife who spent most of her life in Danville. She was also a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Hayes Sparrow of Danville; a son, Otis Odell Hayes of Ringgold; two stepsons, William Hayes of Danville and Jackie Wayne Hayes of Martinsville.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Floral Hills Memory Garden by the Rev. Hylton Lawrence.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 255 Eastwood Drive.
Ruby Guill
SUTHERLIN - Ruby Hawker Guill, 78, 13056 Kentuck Road, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, in Piney Forest Health Care Center, following two months of declining health.
Born May 8, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charlie Hawker and Mary Jane Hawker Hawker.
On Dec. 25, 1938, she was married
to Willie Patrick Guill, who died Jan. 10, 1994.
She spent most of her life in Pittsylvania County, but had been a resident of the nursing home for two years.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Mills Inc., No. 6 Spin, Riverside Division, for 25 years.
She was also a member of Old Mill Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara G. Nuckles and Bonnie G. Dodson, both of Sutherlin; a son, Charlie W. Guill of Sutherlin; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three sisters, Betty Elena "Tootsie" Hawker, Bertha Jones, and Elizabeth Woodson.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by Elder Danny Parker. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence on Route 729.
Lindsey Lucas
Lindsey Lee Lucas, 66, 159 Garden Grove St., died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, in his residence, following five months of declining health.
Born July 14, 1930, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of Robert Lindsey Lucas and Nellie Reid Lucas, who survives.
He was married
to Margaret Hogan Lucas, who survives.
He spent most of his life in Danville, where he was employed by Danville Electric Department for 35 years as a substation technician.
He was a member of State Line Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and head usher. He was also a member of the Walking Club at Piedmont Mall.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Deborah Lucas Tickle of Sutherlin and Kristy Lucas Hite of Ringgold; two brothers, Herbert Lucas of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Robert Lucas of Pelham, N.C.; seven sisters, Mildred L. Massey of Ruffin, N.C., Elizabeth L. Fuller of Roanoke Rapids, Bessie L. Salmon and Barbara L. Massey, both of Danville, Thelma L. Myers, Louise L. Hatcher, and Dorothy L. Myers, all of Pelham; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Wayne Wallace. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, in the Stokesland community.
Herman Scearce
The funeral for Claude Herman Scearce, 82, formerly of 1315 Washington St., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. William C. Taylor and the Rev. Freddy J. Vicks. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Born April 18, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lee O. Scearce and Dana Winn Scearce.
He was married
to Bethel Jones Scearce, who died Oct. 19, 1993.
He was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church.
He spent his entire life in the Danville area. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Swanson Motors as manager of the tire department.
During World II, he served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include a son, Charles Lee Scearce of Danville; a daughter, Nancye Scearce Hyde of Peterborough, N.H.; three brothers, Frank Scearce and Roy Scearce, both of Dry Fork, and Leonard Scearce of Danville; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 213 Samuel Bend, Danville.
Melissa Abbott
The graveside service for Melissa Holland Abbott, 31, of Keeling, will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Daniel Lackey.
She died Saturday night, Feb. 8, 1997, at her home.
Born Aug. 10, 1965, in Danville, she was the daughter of William H. Holland, who survives, and Rachel Travis Holland, who is predeceased. Her stepmother, Charlotte Webb Holland, also survives.
She was a graduate of George Washington High School and worked at Estabrook's Hallmark Card Shop in Ballou Park. She attended Brush Arbor Baptist Church.
In addition to her father and stepmother, she is survived by one sister, Maria Fuson of Danville; her maternal grandmother, Mattie Webb of Danville; her maternal grandfather, Walter Travis of Brookneal; and her paternal grandmother, Ruby Powell of Danville.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence of Bill and Charlotte Holland, 210 Hermitage Drive.
Willard Arnett Jr.
SUTHERLIN - The graveside service for Dr. Eugene Willard Arnett Jr., 84, of Route 1, Box 126 C-2, will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Ray Wiggs.
He died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
He was formerly of Robertson Avenue in Danville.
Born June 13, 1912, in Danville, he was a son of Eugene Willard Arnett and Perdita Butler Arnett.
He attended the College of William and Mary, and earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He served his internship at Duke University.
After serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, he practiced as a family physician in Danville for many years.
He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Beth Arnett of Pasadena, Calif.; and a sister, Perdita Brantly of Durham, N.C.

William Astin Sr.
William Linden Astin Sr., 93, 485 Moorefield Bridge Road, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, in his residence, following three years of declining health.
Born March 15, 1903, in the Mount Cross community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Wilson Astin and Annie Robertson Astin.
On June 14, 1925, he was married
to Myrtle Brown Astin, who survives.
He spent his life in the Mount Cross community, where he was a farmer.
He was also a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the church council and the men's Bible class.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Betty A. Davidson of Columbus, Ga., Rose Astin of Danville, and Jean A. Elliott of Whitmell; a son, William Linden Astin Jr. of Burnsville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Ascension Lutheran Church by the Rev. Caldwell Day. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Thelma Fletcher
TAMPA, Fla. - The graveside service for Thelma Cullop Fletcher, 83, of 6921 Lake Place Court, Tampa, will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Sheva Church of Christ cemetery by the Rev. Thomas Hardy.
She died Saturday morning, Feb. 8, 1997, in the University Community Hospital.
Born March 6, 1913, in Victoria, Va., she was a daughter of Charles Preston Cullop and Lema Sue Simpson Cullop.
She was married
to Frank Kilby Fletcher, who died Aug. 27, 1994.
Survivors include a daughter, Knox Littlepage Fletcher Allen of Tampa; a brother, Ernest Cullop of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Artie Yeatts of Dry Fork, Va.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 9-10 a.m. today at Townes Funeral Home.
