Vannie Brandon Baynes
The funeral for Vannie Brandon Baynes, 92, 1515 Kemper Road Extension, will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church, corner of South Main and Stokes Streets, by the Rev. Brandon Smith. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
She died early Monday morning, Dec. 29, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following a lengthy decline in health.
Born Sept. 2, 1905, in Danville, she was the daughter of Henrietta Brandon.
She was married
to Ervin Patterson Baynes, who died in 1967.
She was a homemaker.
She attended the Holbrook Street Presbyterian School and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, the Gospel Chorus, the Intermediate Choir and the P.M.B. Hodge Missionary Society.
Survivors include two daughters, Thelma B. Harris of the residence and Mary B. Hunt of Baltimore; a son, Willie J. Baynes of the residence; two daughters-in-law, Mary D. Baynes and Emma J. Baynes, both of Danville; two sons-in-law, Winstead E. Harris of the residence and Edward Hunt of Baltimore; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Thomas "Spark Plug" Baynes, who died in 1995.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Cecil Conner Sr.
Funeral services for Cecil Ray Conner Sr., 53, 4836 Mount Cross Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Gil Hawks. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
He died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center Emergency Room.
Born April 15, 1944, in Cedar Grove, W.Va., he was a son of Cecil Paul Conner and Ardith Lilly Conner, who survives.
On Oct. 26, 1968, he was married
to Verna Clay Conner, who also survives.
A resident of Pittsylvania County for most of his life, he was employed by Bell Atlantic as a system's technician. He had worked with the company for 30 years.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and Bell Atlantic Pioneers.
He served in Germany with the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Charleston, W.Va., survivors include two sons, Cecil Ray Conner Jr. of Danville and Cameron Paul Conner of the residence; a daughter, Holly Michelle Conner of the residence; and a grandchild.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his brother, Jerry Lee Conner.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Corinne Hardy
Corinne Stoner Hardy, 82, 222 Courtland St., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation Center after two years of declining health.
Born Dec. 13, 1915, in Knoxville, Tenn., she was a daughter of William L. Stoner and Jennie Phillips Stoner.
She was first married
to Harry D. Shriver Sr., who died on June 23, 1978. She was later married
to Otway L. "O.L." Hardy, who died on Feb. 19, 1986.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she worked as a sitter until her retirement.
She was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church, where she was active in Sunday school as well as church.
She was also a member of Holiday Village Breakfast Club, where she had served as secretary and worked with Village News Letter.
Survivors include two daughters, Harriett S. Adkins of Sutherlin and Jennette S. Roberts of Conover, N.C.; two sons, Harry D. "Bucky" Shriver of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Ralph K. Shriver of Matoaca; a brother, William S. Stoner Jr. of Selma, Ala.; a sister, Jessie S. Farmer of Altavista; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by two brothers, Homer Stoner and Claude Stoner; and two sisters, Cora S. Robertson and Ruth S. Potts.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. G.H. Vaughan Jr. and the Rev. Julian Griffin. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Harriett S. Adkins, 2760 Reeves Mill Road, Sutherlin.
The Rev. L. J. Harris
RINGGOLD - The Rev. Lennie James Harris, 86, 2035 Mountain Hill Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a week of declining health and the last three days in the hospital.
Born April 21, 1911, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of John Henry Harris and Frances Rickman Harris Slate.
On May 29, 1932, he was married
to Jessie Frances Marshall, who died Dec. 11, 1988.
A life-long resident of the Mountain Hill community, he was a retired farmer and retired from Dan River Mills No. 5 Spin Riverside Division, where he worked as a doffer for more than 35 years.
He was still active as pastor of Non Denominational Christian Tabernacle, which founded and pastored for more than 40 years.
Survivors include four sons, Alfrad James Harris, Leon Edward Harris, Luther Eugene Harris and Lonnie Harris, all of the Mountain Hill community; four daughters, Sylvia Ann H. Bibee, Edithel Garnell H. Hobbs, Patsy H. Wilson and Penny H. Purnell, all of the Mountain Hill community; a brother, Harden Slate of Ringgold; a sister, Elmer H. Marshall of Ringgold; 20 grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild and seven step-great-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Cleveland Slate; and a sister, Josephine H. Owen.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Non Denominational Christian Tabernacle Church by the Rev. Billy Hamlett and the Rev. Louis Emerson. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the church on Mountain Hill Road, and other times at the residence of his daughter, Patsy H. Wilson, 477 Owl Road off Mountain Hill Road.

Linda Hodnett
RINGGOLD - Funeral services for Linda Hodnett, 54, 2577 Ringgold Church Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Riveroak Church of God by the Rev. Tim Nuckles, the Rev. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert L. Vermillion. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
She died Tuesday morning, Dec. 30, 1997, at Medical University Hospital of South Carolina, Charleston, S.C., after having an aneurysm Monday.
Born April 4, 1943, in Danville, she was the daughter of Vernon Summers Cullop and Hilda Martin Cullop, who survives.
Most of her life was spent in Schoolfield.
She was married
to Samuel Morrison Hodnett, who survives.
She was a homemaker and supervisor in quality control for H&R Block.
She was a member of Riveroak Church of God and Gideons Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Samuel Morrison Hodnett II of the residence and Steven Marshall Hodnett of Ringgold; a daughter, Synthia Marlene Hodnett Cook of Danville, a brother, Bobby Lee Cullop of Richmond; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Reuben 'Buster' Payne
DRY FORK - Reuben "Buster" Hampton Payne, 85, 7412 Dry Fork Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at his residence after several months of declining health.
Born Jan. 30, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lee Hampton Payne and Carrie Booker Payne.
A-life long resident of Pittsylvania County, he was engaged in farming and last worked at Diston Plant until he retired.
He was a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church, a former Sunday school supt., and formerly on the adminstration board.
Survivors include three sisters, Evelyn P. Stowe of Dry Fork, Mae P. Thomas of Danville and Louise P. Hubbard of Chatham; and a brother, William H. Payne of Wilmington, N.C.
He was predeceased by L. James Payne, Charles Nelson Payne, Walter L. Payne and Virginia P. Dodd.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Whitmell United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Cannon. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. today at the church.

Mildred Thacker
Mildred Taylor Thacker, 68, 212 Willoughby Place, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 4, 1929, in Danville, she was the daughter of Georgia Taylor.
She was a member of Loyal Baptist Church and was educated in the Danville Public School System.
Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis T. Wright of Alexandra; four sons, Monroe Thacker Jr., David J. Thacker, Elder Ernest L. Thacker and Larry W. Thacker, all of Danville; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by Elder Major Hairston. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Lucilla Cunningham
RINGGOLD - Lucilla Parker Cunningham, 84, 245 Witcher Road, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 8, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Washington Parker and Julia Oliver Parker.
She was married
to James H. Cunningham, who predeceased her.
She was employed by Export Tobacco Company for many years.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary Richardson of Hampton, Guyeula Fuller of Detroit, Shirley Craig of Plainfield, N.J., and Ardell Farmer of Ringgold; two sons, Maynard Cunningham and James Wayne, both of Danville; a brother, Plas H. Parker of Ringgold; a sister, Dorothy Smith of Danville; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Burial will be in Floral Hill Memory Gardens.
