[Keeling native Robert Burgess' line of work put him in different towns on a regular basis. Unfortunately, it put him in Columbus County, N.C., on New Year's Eve where he was killed in a late night auto accident.
Burgess, 40, was the passenger in a westbound car that crossed the center line of U.S. 74 just after 10 p.m. Wednesday. The vehicle he was riding in struck an eastbound vehicle carrying a family of four.
The driver of the car Burgess was in, 19-year-old Emmanuel David Garris of Spencer, N.C., was killed. In the second vehicle, the fatalities included James Allen Cartrette Jr., 44, his wife, Diantha, 42, and their 14-year-old daughter, Hannah.
Only the couple's son, James Cartrette III, survived the wreck. On Friday afternoon, Cartrette was listed in fair condition at Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville.
A toxicology test on the blood of James Cartrette Jr. and Garris was ordered to determine if alcohol played a role in the accident. The results were not available Friday evening.
According to family members, Burgess had been working in the Columbus County area recently.
"He was a certified welder," said Burgess' brother Wayne. "He was certified with large companies around the world."
The bulk of Burgess' work revolved around shutting down boilers and powerhouses. The demands of the job frequently made him a man on the move.
"He wasn't around here much at all," Wayne Burgess said. "One week he would be in one state, the next week he would be in another."
Robert Burgess was divorced and a father of two, according to family members.
"He was brought up in a very fine Christian home," his brother said. "He was a good fella in the way he lived."]
