Helen Grimes
Helen V. Grimes, 74, 603 Sunnyside Ave., died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at her residence following several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 9, 1923, in Danville, she was a daughter of Frank Odell Grimes and Elizabeth Rice Grimes.
A life long resident of Danville, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a sister, Geneva Grimes of the residence; and a brother, Cecil Grimes also of the residence.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Paul Johnson.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Linda Hodnett
RINGGOLD - Funeral services for Linda Cullop Hodnett, 54, 2577 Ringgold Church Road, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Riveroak Church of God by the Rev. Tim Nuckles, the Rev. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert L. Vermillion. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
She died Tuesday morning, Dec. 30, 1997, at Medical University Hospital of South Carolina, Charleston, S.C., after having an aneurysm Monday.
Born April 4, 1943, in Danville, she was the daughter of Vernon Summers Cullop and Hilda Martin Cullop, who survives.
Most of her life was spent in Schoolfield.
She was married
to Samuel Morrison Hodnett, who survives.
She was a homemaker and supervisor in quality control for H&R Block.
She was a member of Riveroak Church of God and Gideons Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Samuel Morrison Hodnett II of the residence and Steven Marshall Hodnett of Ringgold; a daughter, Synthia Marlene Hodnett Cook of Danville, a brother, Bobby Lee Cullop of Richmond; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Reuben 'Buster' Payne
DRY FORK - Funeral services for Reuben "Buster" Hampton Payne, 85, 7412 Dry Fork Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Whitmell United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Cannon. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at his residence after several months of declining health.
Born Jan. 30, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lee Hampton Payne and Carrie Booker Payne.
A life-long resident of Pittsylvania County, he was engaged in farming and last worked at The Disston Co. plant until he retired.
He was a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church, a former Sunday school superintendent, and formerly on the administrative board.
Survivors include three sisters, Evelyn P. Stowe of Dry Fork, Mae P. Thomas of Danville and Louise P. Hubbard of Chatham; and a brother, William H. Payne of Wilmington, N.C.
He was predeceased by L. James Payne, Charles Nelson Payne, Walter L. Payne and Virginia P. Dodd.

James Swanson
AXTON - James Willis Swanson, 67, 16748 Callands Road, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 2, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 11, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Thomas Swanson and Lumma Adkins Swanson.
He was married
to Alice Eggleston Swanson, who survives.
He retired from DuPont in 1986 and was also retired from farming.
He was a member of County Line Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Thomas Henry Swanson and Curtis N. Swanson, both of Callands; a sister, Francis S. Smith of Callands; two brothers, Eugene A. Swanson of Callands and William P. Swanson of Martinsville; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by Minister Dean Ashby and Minister J.D. Hunt III.
The family will receive friends 6:30-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Gene Clark
CHATHAM - Gene Clark, 59, 100 Pine St., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 27, 1938, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Mary Clark.
He was married
to Willie Jean Clark, who survives.
He was a member of Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Bowen & Sinder Steel Mill for 30 years. He worked for Geariod Transfer Station for six years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a step-mother, Edna Anderson of Philadelphia; five step-children, James Word and Joyce Word, both of Chatham, Jeffrey Word and Kathy Word, both of Baltimore, and Gordon Word of Halifax; one brother, Milton Anderson of San Diego; four sisters, Malene Parker and Judy Anderson, both of Roslyn, N.Y., Barbara Anderson of Chatham, Mabel Townsend of Atlantic City, N.J.; and 15 step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday from Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. H.G. McGhee. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

James Hall
James William Hall Jr., 74, 123 Stanley Drive, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for 21 years and was in the hospital for one day.
Born Oct. 28, 1923, in the Kentuck community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James William Hall and Willie Mae Owen Hall.
He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. He spent his entire life in Danville, and retired after 29 years as a driver for Overnite Transportation Co.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
On Oct. 9, 1948, he was married
to Janie Pleasant Hall, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Beverley Ann Hall of Salem, Susan Hall Tickle of Danville and Connie Lynn H. Wooding of South Boston; a brother, Harold W. Hall of Charlotte, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Colleen H. Thornton.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home Westover Chapel by the Rev. Larry Edmonds and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Evans. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence.
Mabel Hayden
Mabel Gauldin Hayden, 74, 303 Plum St., died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at her residence. She had been in declining health since May 1997.
Born July 20, 1923, in Derwood, Md., she was a daughter of Joseph T. Gauldin and Martha Moore Gauldin.
She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church.
She spent most of her life in Danville and had been employed as a salesperson at Thalhimers and later Sears until her retirement in 1995.
On March 29, 1947, she was married
to Joseph E. Hayden Sr., who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Martha H. Dillard of Sutherlin, Barbara H. Williams of Ogdensburg, N.Y. and Julia H. Jones of Hickory, N.C. and Rebecca R. Hayden of South Boston; a son, Joseph E. Hayden Jr. of the residence; four sisters, Georgia G. Mabe, Eunice G. Jones and Claudia G. Conner, all of Danville and Cora G. Cook of South Boston; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Michael Campbell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence, 303 Plum St.
Marvel Love
VICTORIA - Marvel Hutchinson Love, 78, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998.
She is survived by her husband, Garland Edward "Gill" Love; one daughter-in-law, Mary Helen Love of Richmond; her grandchildren, Annette Love McCormick of Fairfax, Phillip Garland Love of Danville, Timothy Wayne Love of Blairs, Marcia Love Crews of Chatham; eight great-grandchildren, and her sister, Helen Louise Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla.
She was also the mother of the late Sherral Garland Love.
She was a member of Victoria Christian Church. She also belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, and was former owner and operator of Love's Florists and Gifts in Victoria for many years.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at the Victoria Christian Church with burial in Lakeview cemetery, Victoria.
The family will receive friends at the Staples Funeral Home Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m.

Teary Mills
Teary Paige Mills, 45, 805 Washington St., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 6, 1952, in Danville, he was retired from Dibrell Tobacco Co.
Survivors include his mother, Reeva L. Mills of Danville.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. J.P. Griffith Jr. Interment
will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
The body may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The family will be at the residence, 805 Washington St.
Troy Barbour
ROCKY MOUNT - Edward Troy Barbour, 52, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at Franklin Manor.
Born April 25, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Clarence Barbour and Corrie Parker Barbour.
Survivors include two brothers, John C. Barbour Jr. of Callands and Roger W. Barbour of Bassett; four sisters, Margaret Smith and Kathryn Hankins, both of Callands, Joyce Cox of Martinsville and Agatha Pigg of Boydton.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Hazel Jean Barbour and Jackie Gray.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Coy Clark. Interment
will be in Gretna Burial Park.

Betty Geiger
Betty Miller Geiger, 74, 136 Ginger Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at Stratford Health Center. She had been in declining health for a year and was in the Stratford Health Center for six months.
Born Dec. 12, 1923, in Lonaconig, Md., she was a daughter of William J. Miller and Irene Holmes Miller.
On July 3, 1948, she was married
to Charles L. Geiger Sr., who survives.
She had been a resident of Danville since 1966. She was a teacher for the Danville Head Start program for 20 years and when she retired 16 years ago, she was director of Danville Head Start. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the Ladies Knights Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by three sons, Charles L. Geiger Jr. of Clarksville, Tenn., Thomas A. Geiger and Michael S. Geiger, both of Danville; a sister, Marie D. Kroll of Cumberland, Md.; and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Bobby J. Miller, David G. Miller and William F. Miller.
The funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by the Rev. Father David L. McGuire. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. The Rosary and Christian Wake service will be held 7 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. The family will receive friends at other times at the residence.
Edna Jeffries
Edna Williamson Jeffries died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 12, 1919, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Walter and Sweet Williamson.
She was a member of Hamer Missionary Baptist Church, where she worked with the missionary circle.
She worked for years in Long Island, N.Y., for the owner of Roth Fur Co.
Survivors include three daughters, Effie J. Graham of New York, Mildred J. Hughes of Milton, N.C., and Carolyn J. Woodard of Walkertown, N.C.; four sons, Earl C. Jeffries and Theron D. Jeffries, both of Yanceyville, N.C., Bernard A. Jeffries of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James S. Jeffries of Blanch, N.C.; two sisters, Eunice Lea of Danville and Florence Fowler of Blanch, N.C.; and 27 grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Lawson Jeffries Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hamer Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Cephus Lea.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Mildred J. Hughes, 3756 Hwy. 57 N., Milton, N.C.
