Dorothy Breedlove
AXTON - Dorothy F. Breedlove, 64, 1061 Gammons Lake Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Laruel Meadows Nursing Home in Hillsville.
Born Nov. 1, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Felix and Katerine Medley Fitzgerald.
She was married
to Howard Breedlove, who survives.
She was a shift worker for W.M. Bassett Furniture in Martinsville and was a member of New Design Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband of Axton, survivors include eight sons, John H. Breedlove Jr. and Harry L. Breedlove, both of Axton, and Samuel L. Breedlove of Danville, Lawrence Breedlove of Reidsville, N.C., and Kenneth W. Breedlove of Martinsville, Keith Breedlove of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Michael A. Breedlove of Turkey and Maurice L. Breedlove of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Lisa Anne Via of Fieldale; seven brothers, James Fitzgerald, Jessie Fitzgerald and Stanley Fitzgerald, all of Danville, and Willie Fitzgerald of Gretna, Jack Fitzgerald and Ernest Fitzgerald, both of Dry Fork, and Charles Walton of Washington, D.C.; and five sisters, Rosa Fitzgerald of Keeling, Artris Long and Brenda Snipes, both of Danville, and Bessie Redd and Geneva Fitzgerald, both of Dry Fork.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at New Design Baptist Church by the Rev. Dwight Mack. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 4-8 tonight at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence.
Joe Carter
Funeral services for Charlie Joseph "Joe" Carter, 86, formerly of the Brosville community, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Hillcrest Baptist Church by the Rev. Ross L. Range Sr. and the Rev. Daryl A. Joyce. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
He died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at the residence of his son, 4513 Meadowbrook Lane, Orlando, Fla., after several years of declining health.
Born March 19, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Charlie Allen Carter and Nannie Ellen Hardy Carter.
He was married
to Eva Shelton Carter, who died in June 1982.
A resident of the Brosville community for most of his life, he was retired from Dan River Mills and was also a retired farmer.
He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Joseph R. Carter of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Peggy Ann Russo of Merritt Island, Fla.; two brothers, Ralph Carter of Dry Fork and Hardy Carter of Brosville; four sisters, Sue C. Merricks of Danville, Lois C. Scearce of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Helen C. Pendleton of Leigh Acres, Fla., and Bernice C. Herndon of Dry Fork; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 240 Joe Carter Road, Brosville community.

R. Dillard Carter Sr.
BLAIRS - Funeral services for R. Dillard Carter Sr., 82, 8024 Spring Garden Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Chestnut Level Baptist Church by the Rev. Rusty Mullins and the Rev. Julian Griffin. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park with Masonic rites performed by the Carter Masonic Lodge No. 323.
He died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after a year of declining health.
Born Oct. 9, 1915, in Blairs, he was a son of Robert Winn Carter and Elizabeth Crane Carter.
On April 5, 1940, he was married
to Rebecca Katharine Carter, who died Nov. 8, 1983.
He was a member and past master of Carter Masonic Lodge No. 323. He was a member of Royal Arch Chapter Masonic Lodge of Chatham, Morgan-Johnson Chapter No. 44 Order of the Eastern Star of Chatham and Euclid Royal Arch 15.
He was a past high priest of Chatham Royal Arch 56.
He was retired from the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service and was a retired farmer of the Blairs community.
He was also a member of Chestnut Level Baptist Church in the Blairs community.
Survivors include a son, Robert Carter Jr. of Gretna; a daughter, Betty Jean Lovelace of Danville; a brother, Billy Carter of Blairs; a sister, Doris Carter Kolombatovic of McLean; four grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by three sisters.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Kermit Collins
Kermit Lesley Collins, 82, 128 Cooper St., died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 26, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he lived most of his life in Danville.
He was married
to Dora "Nancy" Scearce Collins, who died Jan. 16, 1997.
He worked for Dan River, Inc., and Disston until his retirement.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home.
Lois Gilley
A graveside service for Lois Young Gilley, 70, 618 Cardinal Place, Apt. 3, will be conducted 12 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Daryl Joyce.
She died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at the residence of her daughter after several years of declining health.
Born June 30, 1927, in Stuart, she was a daughter of Harvey Young and Lillia Young.
She was married
to William Thomas Gilley, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy A. Gilley and Patsy J. Jenks, both of Danville; and two sisters, Virginia Mabe of Walnut Cove, N.C., and Fannie Stout of Danville.

John Handy
John W. Handy, 82, 323 Cedarbrook Drive, died Friday morning, Jan. 9, 1998, at Stratford Health Center.
Born Sept. 25, 1915, in Patrick County, he was the son of Martin Lewis Handy and Sarah C. Vipperman Handy.
He was married
to Cora Pulliam Handy, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he worked for Dan River, Inc., in the weave room before retiring.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Roger D. Handy of the residence; two sisters, Goldie Martin of Martinsville and Ocie Kent of Richmond; and a grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Jack Robertson.

Jeanette Hayes
Jeanette Reed Hayes, 88, 443 Confer Drive, died suddenly Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two weeks in the hospital.
Born Oct. 28, 1909, in Rutherfordton, N.C., she was a daughter of the Rev. William A. Reed and Allie Richardson Reed.
She was married
to Hilary Howard Hayes, who died in 1974.
She had lived in Falls Church before moving to Danville in 1974.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of Brethren.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Hayes of Danville; two brothers, John M. Reed of Ringgold and Clayton B. Reed of Danville; and two sisters, Hazel R. Mercer and Selma R. Prather, both of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Dale F. Watson.
A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday in Mill Creek Church of Brethren cemetery, Green Creek, N.C., by the Rev. Kevin Daggett.

Harry McDowell
A graveside service for Harry Ligion McDowell, 90, formerly of Moffett Street, will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Robert Vermillion.
He died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Gretna Health Care after three years of declining health.
Born Aug. 28, 1907, in Danville, he was the son of Raleigh McDowell and Fannie Jones McDowell.
He was married
to Gladys McDowell, who died April 14, 1992.
A life long resident of the Danville area, he worked with Dan River Inc. as a truck driver prior to his retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy G. Guill of Keeling and Linda Samuels of Ringgold; a son, Ray McDowell of Ringgold; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 245 One Hundred Acre Road.

Henry Rogers
BLAIRS - Funeral services for Henry Rogers, 85, 9204 U.S. Hwy. 29, will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Chestnut Level Baptist Church by the Rev. Julian Griffin and the Rev. Rusty Mullins. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at his residence after several years of declining health.
Born Aug. 22, 1912, in the Riceville community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Thomas Rogers and Ada McDowell Rogers.
On Nov. 11, 1933, he was married
to Jane Farson Rogers, who survives.
He was a member of Chestnut Level Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, a past trustee and he served as secretary of Sunday schools for 32 years.
He lived his life in Riceville and Blairs for the past 50 years.
He was a retired farmer and he worked as a warehouseman at Planters Warehouse in Danville, Blairs Bright Leaf Warehouse and Neals Warehouse in Blairs.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, William Henry "Bill" Rogers Jr. of Blairs; two daughters, Sue F. Rogers of Danville and Betty R. Redd of Chatham; a sister, Ethel R. McDaniel of Riceville; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of William H. "Bill" Rogers Jr., 460 Carter Lodge Road, Blairs.

Chet Smoral
Vincent Chester "Chet" Smoral, 77, 241 Lady Astor Place, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 19, 1920, in Syracuse, N.Y., he was the son of Catherine Smoral and Karl Smoral.
On July 12, 1947, he was married
to Virginia Feldman Smoral, who survives.
He was a graduate of Manhatten College in New York.
He worked as superintendent of recreation for the City of Danville. He later worked as a State Farm Agent for 30 years before retiring.
He served as and area referee for 25 years for both football and basketball.
He was a coach for many youth sports both civic and church athletics.
He was an early advocate in equal opportunity and was involved in the integration of sport programs with the Danville City Schools.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a charter member of Knights of Columbus and Optimist Club.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Vincent C. Smoral Jr. of Huntsville, Ala., and Stephen P. Smoral of Vancouver, Wash., and Martin L. Smoral of Silver Springs, Ma.; a daughter, Catherine S. Williams of Richmond; two sisters, Judy Friedman of Annapolis, Md., and Ann Zrebriec of Rochester, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father David V. McGuire. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home with a Blessing Service being held at 7 p.m. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
