Dora Sprinkle
GALAX - Dora Shaw Sprinkle, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998.
She was born in Carroll County on Feb. 8, 1913, to the late Robert Lee Shaw and Caldona Montgomery Shaw.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Graves Sprinkle, formerly of Danville.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Ron Lefever of Ashland; a son, Jerry Sprinkle of Galax; a stepdaughter, George Lou Reins of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; a sister-in-law, O'Lena Cox of Mt. Airy, N.C.; a brother-in-law, James L. "Jay" Sprinkle of Melbourne, Fla.; two grandchildren, Matt and Kara Lefever; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Camp Zion Church by the Rev. Bill Davis.
Burial will be in Felts Memorial cemetery.

Katherine Williams
Katherine Elizabeth Williams, widow of Dr. John Paul Williams, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at Augusta Medical Center in Staunton. She was 83.
She was born Jan. 30, 1914, in Danville, the daughter of the late Katherine and James Byers.
Mrs. Williams was associated with the Danville Dental Auxiliary, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History and the YWCA. She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church and a former member of Danville Golf Club.
She is survived by two sons, John Paul Williams Jr. of Danville and James Conley Melvin of Chatham; a daughter, Nancy Williams Hedberg of Staunton; a sister, Carolyn Rink Skidmore of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Milam Rink of Smith Mountain Lake; two daughters-in-law, Tammy Williams of Danville and Martha Terry Melvin of Chatham; five grandchildren, John Paul Williams, Page M. Sydnor, Emily Katherine Hedberg, William Louis Hedberg, Dusty Moore; and a great-grandchild, Nathaniel Terry Sydnor.
A graveside service will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, 2 p.m. at Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. David Gray.
The family will receive friends at the residence of John Paul Williams Jr., 147 College Ave.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew.

Ethel Clay
Ethel Motley Clay, 80, formerly of 115 Macon St., died Saturday morning, Jan. 10, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident at the Pinecrest Adult Home before entering the hospital.
Born June 14, 1917, in Danville, she was the daughter of Willie Motley and Gabriella Hardy Motley.
She was married
to Thomas Clay, who died Feb. 14, 1981.
She spent most of her life in Suffolk and Danville. She was a homemaker and a member of the Stokesland United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Betty McNeely of Danville, Bonnie Williams of Suffolk and Nancy Pope of Clarksville, Md.; a sister, Elizabeth Noonkester of Danville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Dorothy Thomas. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the Swicegood Funeral Home Monday night from 7 to 8:30 and at other times at the home of her daughter, Betty McNeely, 101 Bishop Ave.
Kermit Collins
Kermit Lesley Collins, 82, 128 Cooper St., died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 26, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he lived most of his life in Danville.
He was married
to Dora "Nancy" Scearce Collins, who died Jan. 16, 1997.
He worked for Dan River, Inc., and Disston until his retirement.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks.
Vernon B. Garvin Jr.
Vernon B. Garvin Jr., 72, of 729 Spring St., Hurt, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was the husband of the late Virginia Conner Garvin.
Born July 30, 1925 in Rising Sun, Md., he was a son of the late Vernon Burgette Garvin Sr. and Sarah Shelor Garvin.
He was a member of Lane Memorial United Methodist Church and the Hurt Lions Club. Mr. Garvin was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, a retired mechanical engineer with Montague-Betts and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.
He is survived by two sons, Vernon B. Garvin III of Bassett and Dale L. Garvin of Danville; a sister, Mildred Gorrell of Perryville, Md.; two grandchildren, Christina Garvin and Mary Garvin; two step grandchildren, Angela Calaman and Dorothy Gilbert; a step great-grandson, Johnathan Townsend; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday in Lane Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Allen. A graveside service will be conducted in Jacksonville cemetery in Floyd at 2:30 p.m. Monday.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Finch & Finch Funeral Home, Altavista, and at other times at the residence.
John Handy
John W. Handy, 82, 323 Cedarbrook Drive, died Friday morning, Jan. 9, 1998, at Stratford Health Center.
Born Sept. 25, 1915, in Patrick County, he was the son of Martin Lewis Handy and Sarah C. Vipperman Handy.
He was married
to Cora Pulliam Handy, who survives.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he worked for Dan River, Inc., in the weave room before retiring.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Roger D. Handy of the residence; two sisters, Goldie Martin of Martinsville and Ocie Kent of Richmond; and a grandchild.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Schoolfield cemetery by the Rev. Jack Robertson.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jeanette Hayes
Jeanette Reed Hayes, 88, 443 Confer Drive, died suddenly Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two weeks in the hospital.
Born Oct. 28, 1909, in Rutherfordton, N.C., she was a daughter of the Rev. William A. Reed and Allie Richardson Reed.
She was married
to Hilary Howard Hayes, who died in 1974.
She had lived in Falls Church before moving to Danville in 1974.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of Brethren.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Hayes of Danville; two brothers, John M. Reed of Ringgold and Clayton B. Reed of Danville; and two sisters, Hazel R. Mercer and Selma R. Prather, both of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Dale F. Watson.
A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday in Mill Creek Church of Brethren cemetery, Green Creek, N.C., by the Rev. Kevin Daggett.
Melba Murrill
Melba Graves Murrill, a life-time beautician, departed this world and entered God's higher spiritual realm Jan. 7, 1998.
Melba was born Jan. 21, 1921 in Caswell County, N.C., to Sallie and Vester Graves Sr. She graduated from Caswell County Training School. Her higher education began at Maco Beauty College, Greensboro, N.C. She earned a degree in cosmetology and worked as a beautician for many years, finally owning her own shop.
Melba was a devoted mother, sister and sympathetic wife, a counselor and friend in the community.
In later years she moved to New York and worked at Rose Morgan Beauty Salon. Upon returning to Danville, she continued to work as a beautician and successfully operated Murrill's Beautirama, until her retirement.
At an early age, Melba professed hope in Jesus and was baptized and became a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Throughout her life she kept her church close to heart. She organized and was president of the Senior Choir for many years. She was a member of the Senior Choir, Missionary Society, the Nurse's Unit and Deaconesses. Other affiliations are: the Danville-Finley Beauticians Chapter, Beta Alpha sorority, Royal Order of Tent #423, Theta Nu Sigma national sorority, and the National Beauty Culturist's League.
Melba Murrill leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Joan McLean Hairston and son-in-law, Samuel Hairston Jr. of the home; three grandsons, Darrell McLean of Yanceyville, N.C., Murrill L. McLean of Danville, and Kebin McLean of Baltimore, Md.; a great-granddaughter, Arianne McLean of Eielson, Alaska; two sisters, Ella G. Gannaway of Yanceyville, N.C., and Obelia G. Henderson of Pine Hill Rest Home, Yanceyville, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Handy Graves of Danville, Roxie Graves of Yanceyville, N.C., and Alene G. Russell of Blanch, N.C.; a brother-in-law, John Henderson of Blanch, N.C.; very special and loving family friends, Thelma Ingram and Pecora Lipscomb; two very special nieces, Saint Clara Robinson (Dump), Gaye Poteat and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Murrill will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at Ebenezer Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul A. Jackson. Interment
will follow at New Zion Baptist Church cemetery in Milton, N.C.

Alvin Gregory
Alvin L. Gregory, 79, 233 Brentwood Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at his residence after several years of declining health.
Born June 19, 1918, in the Swansonville community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie Gregory and Mary Harvey Gregory.
He was married
to Stella M. Hammond Gregory, who survives.
He was of Methodist faith.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 325.
He lived in Washington D.C. for 20 years before moving back to Pittsylvania County in January of 1967.
He had been a resident of Danville since 1973.
He retired from Dan Valley Foods where he worked as a driver.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by a son, Al Gregory Jr., of Danville; two daughters, Sharon Winebrenner Rigney and Brenda Gregory Burnette, both of Danville; a brother, Dr. Carlton E. Gregory of McLean; two sisters, Audrey G. Finney of Martinsville and Stella G. McCubbins of Callands; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. J.D. Hunt and the Rev. Lewis Harris. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Maurice Thomas Hoskins
CHATHAM - Maurice Hoskins, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 28, 1920 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Lee Hoskins and Omie Dodd Hoskins.
He was married
to Joyce Adams Hoskins, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was a veteran of World War II.
In addition to his wife of Chatham, he is survived by a daughter, Shirley H. Adkins, of Chatham; a son, Roger M. Hoskins of Dry Fork; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday from Hollywood Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Haywood Alcorn.
The family will receive friends 7 until 8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his daughter, Shirley H. Adkins.
