Mamie Miller
Mamie Gibbs Miller, 63, 505 Ferry Road, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998 at Danville Regional Medical Center after four years of declining health. She was in the hospital for one week.
Born April 25, 1934 in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert Archie Gibbs and Jennie Mae Collin Gibbs.
On April 12, 1952, she married
Lawrence E. Miller, who died Feb. 17, 1994.
She was of Baptist faith.
She lived most of her life in Danville.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Lawrence V. Miller of Richmond and Robert C. Miller of Danville; three brothers, Robert Gibbs, Jesse Gibbs and Wayne Gibbs; seven sisters, Mary Hazelwood, Virginia Shelton, Geraldine Anderson, Gladys Carter, Carolyn Gibbs, Marie Hodges, and Irma Allen; a grandson, Joshua Lawrence Miller of Richmond; a granddaughter, Brittany Nicole Miller of Danville; and special friends, Robin Alcorn, Calvin Lee Wood and Kenneth Ray Miller.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. John H. LaRue. Interment
will be at National cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
James "Clack" Adams Jr.
RINGGOLD - James "Clack" Adams Jr., 64, 5231 Tom Fork Road, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 26, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Buster James Adams and Mammie Gasty Adams.
He was married
to Kate Graves Adams, who survives.
He was employed with Commodore Mobile Home for many years before retirement.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Frederick J. Adams, James A. Adams and Wendell K. Adams, all of Danville, and Rodney L. Adams of Schweinfurt, Germany; three daughters, Teresa Adams, Crystal Goods and Kimberly Adams, all of Danville; a sister, Gladys Poole of Ringgold; two brothers, Bobby Adams of Danville and Lance Adams of Woodbridge; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Tabernacle Church of Jesus Christ by Elder Alvester Edmonds. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Alvin Gregory
Funeral services for Alvin L. Gregory, 79, 233 Brentwood Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. J.D. Hunt and the Rev. Lewis Harris. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.
He died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at his residence after several years of declining health.
Born June 19, 1918, in the Swansonville community of Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Charlie Gregory and Mary Harvey Gregory.
He was married
to Stella M. Hammond Gregory, who survives.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 325.
He lived in Washington, D.C., for 20 years before moving back to Pittsylvania County in January of 1967.
He had been a resident of Danville since 1973.
He retired from Dan Valley Foods where he worked as a driver.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by a son, Al Gregory Jr., of Danville; two daughters, Sharon Winebrenner Rigney and Brenda Gregory Burnette, both of Danville; a brother, Dr. Carlton E. Gregory of McLean; two sisters, Audrey G. Finney of Martinsville and Stella G. McCubbins of Callands; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Dennis 'Boy' Hendley Sr.
Dennis "Boy" Hendley Sr., 69, 183 Lakewood Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at his residence after several years of declining health.
Born Sept. 8, 1928, in Danville, he was the son of Henry H. Hendley and Pearl Ringstaff Hendley.
He was married
to Nancy Carolyn Moore Hendley, who survives.
A life long resident of Danville, he was employed as a boiler mechanic for Dan River Inc., until his retirement due to health reasons.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include three daughters, Pamela L. Hendley, Vicky Adkins and Tammy Coleman, all of Danville; three sons, Dennis J. Hendley Jr., Barry W. Hendley and Randy H. Hendley, all of Danville; two sisters, Pam Dalton and Joy Talbard, both of Danville; 24 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Donna Tuck.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bennett Shelton. Burial will be in Green Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his son, Barry W. Hendley, 223 Forest Road Drive.

Velna Scearce
Velna Barker Scearce, 89, Franklin Turnpike, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at her residence.
Born March 30, 1908, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Onico Barker and Lula Covington Barker.
She was married
to Percy Jennings Scearce, who predeceased her.
She was a long time, active member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.
She was a graduate of Harrisonburg State Teachers College.
She was a mother and homemaker and a teacher.
Survivors include a son, P. Jennings Scearce Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Rockville, Md.; a daughter, Betty Lu Bridges and her husband, Pat, of Virginia Beach; two brothers, E. Gould Barker of Danville and J. Artie Barker of Newport News; three granddaughters, Kimberly Ann Scearce-Levie, Deborah Anne Handford and Carol Elizabeth Anderson; a grandson, Charles N. Bennett III; and two great-grandsons, A. Scott Handford and Brendan Scearce Handford.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Moffett Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee D. Ellison. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Marion Walters Jr.
Marion Samuel Walters Jr., 48, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, in Baltimore.
Born Oct. 22, 1949, in Danville, he was the son of Marion S. Walters and Bessie F. Walters, who survive.
He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
He played basketball and baseball at John M. Langston High School and attended Barbara Scotia College and New York University.
In addition to his parents of Danville, survivors include three sons, Tony Walters, Chansey Walters and Harthorn Walters, all of Baltimore; and two sisters, Mary W. Lone of Baltimore and Carolyn Funderburke of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at Joseph L. Russ Funeral Home, 2222-26 W. North Ave., Baltimore. Burial will be in the Baltimore area.
Locally, the family will receive friends at 952 Goodyear Blvd.
Daryl Warren
AXTON - Daryl F. Warren, 58, 177 Vernon Lane, Eastwood Subdivision, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at his residence.
Born Nov. 4, 1939, in Martinsville, he was a son of Jack Warren and Lilly Bell Warren, who survives.
He was married
to Linda Starkey Warren, who also survives.
He was retired from American Furniture.
He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer.
He was also a musician/song writer and had sung with a number of local gospel groups, including Pine Ridge Gospel Singing Directors and Charlie T. & the Sacred Sounds.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Stoneville, N.C., survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth "Beth" Warren of Martinsville and Judith L. Warren of the residence; a son, Derrick Evan Warren of Axton; three brothers, Ronald M. Warren of Lugoff, S.C., Jack S. Warren of Greensboro, N.C., and Thomas K. Warren of Shenandoah; two sisters, Phyllis Compton of Stoneville, N.C., and Priscilla Via of Ridgeway; and three grandsons.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Temple Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Reynolds. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

Mary Settle Boyd Brown
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mary Settle Boyd Brown, 102, of the Presbyterian Home of the District of Columbia, 3050 Military Road, N.W. Washington, D.C., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at the home.
A native of Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of Samuel Hill Boyd and Elizabeth Settle Boyd.
She was married
to Clement Coote Brown Jr., who predeceased her.
She was employed by the Bureau of Archives in Washington, D.C., a member of Church of the Pilgrams and a member of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century.
Survivors include three nieces, Mrs. Hubert S. Taylor Jr. of Richmond, Va., and Mrs. Loren R. Staunton of Manassas, Va., and Mrs. William D. Cane of New York; and a nephew, Thomas S. Boyd Jr. of Lakeland, Fla.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Greenview cemetery.

Lillie Campbell
Lillie Marshall Campbell, 86, 121 Mimosa St., died Tuesday night, Jan. 13, 1998, at her residence.
Born Jan. 31, 1911, in Carroll County, she was the daughter of Elbert A. Marshall and Mary Virginia Sutphin Marshall.
She was married
to Lonnie E. Campbell, who died April 25, 1993.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was a homemaker and provided child care in her home for many years.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Campbell of Danville and Larry Campbell of Florida; a granddaughter and three step-grandchildren; a great-grandson and 10 step-great grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Swicegood Chapel by Dr. Samuel L. Greeson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends between 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her step-granddaughter, Susan Mitchell, 217 Mimosa St.
