Richard L. Buchanan

HAMPTON, Va. - Richard L. Buchanan, 62, died Friday, May 24, 2002.

Born July 20, 1939, in Jolo, W.Va., he was the son of Myrtle Buchanan Summerlin, who survives, and Robert Buchanan.

He was married to Nancy Brodie Buchanan, who survives. He was retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 10 years as a welder and 28 years as a quality inspector. He was a member of West Hampton Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of Hampton and mother of Newport News, include two sons, Robert M. "Marty" Buchanan of Chantilly and Jeffrey L. Buchanan of Danville; one granddaughter; two brothers, John Doyle Jr. of Hampton and Earl Buchanan of Elkton, Md.

The graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Peninsula Memorial Park with Dr. Ector Hamrick officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Peninsula Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 895 Middle Ground Boulevard, Suite 154, Newport News, Va. 23606.

Lester "Simon" Campbell

DANVILLE, Va. - Lester Otis "Simon" Campbell, 80, of 521 Woodlawn Drive, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at the residence.

Born Feb. 20, 1922, in Danville, he was the son of Willie M. Campbell and Mable New Campbell.

He was married July 3, 1954, to Eloise "Lois" Walker Campbell, who survives. He lived all of his life in Danville where he worked for Dan River Mills in the Maintenance Department and the carpenter shop for 30 years. He was a hunter, gardener, and veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended Forest Lawn Baptist Church and had been in declining health since December 2001.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one daguther, Anita Campbell Jones of Danville; three sisters, Rachel C. Emerson of Dry Fork, Dorothy C. Dickerson of Virginia Beach, and Gloria C. White of Fitchburg, Mass.; one brother, William Ray Campbell of Blairs; and three grandchildren.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one sister, Lois Campbell Stierwalt; and two brothers, Richard Andrew Campbell and Walter Douglas Campbell.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens where taps will be played and a flag will be folded by American Legion Post 325.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel and other times will be at the residence.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Hospice Support Service, P.O. Box 2713, Danville, Va. 24541.

Gertrude Dews

ALTAVISTA, Va. - Gertrude Coles Dews, 75, of 1500 Avondale Drive, Apt. 3, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born May 4, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Altavista Coles and Gladys Coles Johnson.

She was married to Jessie James Dews, who predeceased her.

Survivors include six daughters, Dr. Jacqueline Coles and Carolyn Ann York, both of Patterson, N.J., Gladys Marie Richardson of Rockford, Ill., Lavern Louise Dews of Alexandria, Linda Mae Woodruff and Velma Lee Goard, all of Lynch Station; one son, Howard Edward Dews of the residence; four sisters, Gladys Smith of Evington, Bertha Mae Younger of Patterson, N.J., Nancy Miller of Hurt, and Beulah Grace of Indianapolis, Ind.; two brothers, Elder Allenza Coles of Altavista, and Carlton Coles of Leesville; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her husband and parents, by one son, Fred Dews Jr.; and one brother, Raymond Coles.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jacqueline Coles officiating. Interment will follow at the First Church of Jesus cemetery in Hurt.

The family will be at the residence.

Nell Cobb Griffith

DANVILLE, Va. - Nell Cobb Griffith, age 93, of 161 Westhampton Avenue, died Thursday morning, May 23, 2002 in the Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had been a resident since February.

She was born on June 26, 1908 in Danville, Va. a daughter of Samuel King Cobb and Minnie Lee Slade Cobb.

She was married on July 28, 1934, to Charles L. Griffith, who died on October 18, 1990.

She was a life long member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church where she was a member of Circle 2 of the United Methodist Women. She was a long time volunteer at the Danville Regional Medical Center, and a member of the Wednesday Club and the Forest Hills Garden Club.

She was predeceased by a sister, Lena R. Cobb, three brothers, Slade F. Cobb, Sam B. Cobb, and Graham L. Cobb; a son, David L. Griffith.

Mrs. Griffith is survived by a son, William L. Griffith and his wife, Bonnie, of Danville; two grandchildren, Emily G. Potts and her husband, David of Apex, NC. and W. Christopher Griffith of Danville; a great-grandson, David Slade Potts of Apex, NC.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jonathan Bennett. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and the family will receive friends at the residence of her son, WIlliam L. Griffith, 155 Westhampton Avenue.

The family suggests that memorials may be sent to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 107 West Main Street, Danville, VA 24541.

Ethel Milam

DANVILLE, Va. - Ethel D. Milam, 97, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Feb. 15, 1905, in Laurel Grove community of Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Richard Thomas Milam and Mary Frances Davis Milam.

She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church and First Baptist Church. She was a retired teacher, having taught at Wytheville, Emporia, and Richmond public school system. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the graveside at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Susan Hannah officiating.

The family will receive friends at the graveside after the service.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Laurel Grove Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 26, Sutherlin, Va. 24594.

Floyd "Dick" Saunders

SCOTTSBURG, Va. - Floyd Hilton "Dick" Saunders, 79, of 1077 Richport Lane, died May 24, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Aug. 26, 1922, in Halifax County, he was the son of Floyd Daniel Saunders and Etta St. John Saunders.

He was married to Evvie Wilkerson Saunders. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, and a World War II Army veteran of South Pacific Theater.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of Scottsburg, include one son, William Daniel "Bill" Saunders of Scottsburg' four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by one son, Dickie Saunders.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Tony Brooks officiating. Interment will follow at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or American Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Ida White

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Ida Elizabeth Turner White, 93, of 9028 Old Highway 86 North, died 5:40 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the Senior Citizen's Nursing Home in Henderson.

Born Aug. 6, 1908, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of George and Mamie Crawley Turner.

She was married to Eugene Franklin White, who predeceased her June 9, 1991. She worked for Danville Knitting Mills for 56 years and was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, George W. White of Henderson; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Matthews officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and other times will be at the residence.

Charlie Adkins

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Charlie Linwood Adkins, 90, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Reidsville Rehabilitation and Care Center.

He was married to Sallie Thompson Adkins, who survives. A native of Pittsylvania County, Va., he had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was a retired employee of Burlington Industries Inc., Williamsburg Plant, and was formerly a self-employed produce dealer. He was a member, former deacon and member of the Men's Bible Class at Reidsville Christian Church.

In addition to his wife of Carolina House, survivors include two daughters, Kitty A. Wilson and Dorothy A. Woodall, both of Reidsville; two sisters, Mabel Wimmer and Louise Robertson, both of Danville, Va.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Citty Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memory Gardens.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Building Fund of Reidsville Christian Church, 516 N. Scales St., Reidsville, N.C. 27320.

David Annett

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - David Clayton Annett, 56, of 7018 Laurel Ave., died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at the residence.

Born April 7, 1946, in Danville, he was the son of Robert Gordon Annett, who predeceased him and Dorothy Grinstead Levy, who survives.

He was married to Lynda Edwards Annett, who survives. He had been in declining health since April 24, 2002, as the result of a brain tumor. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy soon after graduation from high school and worked for ENCO in Rocky Mount prior to his illness. He was a member of West Mount Baptist Church and attended Calvery Methodist Church in Virginia.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include one son, Jonathan David Annett of Stantonsburg; one daughter, Megan Clayton Annett of Rocky Mount; one stepfather, Joseph "Joe" Levy of Calvary community; two brothers, Michael Annett of Norfolk, Va. and Patrick Annett of Chicago, Ill.; one stepson, Jamie Edwards of Lynchburg, Va.; one stepsister, Stephanie Ellis of Elberon, Va.; three stepbrothers, David Levy of Alexander, Va., Richard Levy of Newport News, Va., and Mark Levy of Hampton, Va.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Rt. 119 off Rt. 58 East with the Rev. David LeFon and the Rev. Julius Whitley officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery with military honors performed by American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence of his mother, 1008 Foster Road, Rt. 119 off 58 East.

Florence Clark

DANVILLE, Va. - Florence Poole Clark, 80, of 207 Lansdale St., died July 3, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 9, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Charlie Poole and Ella Flippen Poole.

She was married to Burnett Clark, who survives. She was a housewife and was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include three daughters, Neely Fitzgerald of Danville, Janet Thomas and Shelby Clark, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Mountain Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur Crews officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The viewing will be held 4-8 p.m. Friday at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence of Neely Fitzgerald, 2933 Fence Drive.

Fred Graves

RALEIGH, N.C. - Fred Duane Graves, 42, of 1014 N. Spring Garden Circle, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, in Raleigh as the result of an automobile accident.

Born April 22, 1960, he was the son of Fred Graves and Vivian Bunn Graves, who survive.

He was married to Debora C. Nobles-Graves, who survives. He was a 1978 graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School and was employed as a landscaper in Raleigh.

In addition to his wife of the residence and parents of Yanceyville, survivors include two sons, Manuel Duane of Reidsville, and Maliq of the residence; one daughter, Carleda of Hillsborough; two brothers, Don Graves of Milton and Terrance Graves of Butner; two sisters, Charisse Harvey of Newport News, Va. and Tammy Graves of Atlanta, Ga.; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Robinson officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel and the family will be at the residence of his parents, 235 Melvin Wrenn Road in Yanceyville.

Dan Hankins

DRY FORK, Va. - Daniel "Dan" Pleasant Hankins, 93, of 3420 Sandy Creek Road, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center. He had been in declining health for one week.

Born July 8, 1908 in Henry County, he was the son of Robert Hankins and Minnie Jones Hankins.

He was married Dec. 26, 1929 to Janey Edwards Hankins, who predeceased him. He lived his life in Pittsylvania County and was a farmer prior to retirement. He was a member of the Polk Masonic Lodge #61 and was a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church and served on the board of trustees.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Hankins Gibson and Mary Elizabeth Hankins Reed, both of Dry Fork; two half sisters, Rebecca Eanes of Chesapeake and Lois Pickeral of Lynchburg; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Whitmell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Warrick officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with Masonic rites by the Polk Masonic Lodge #61.

The family received friends 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the residence of his daughter, Barbara Gibson, 3216 Sandy Creek Road and at other times at her residence.

Willie Kasey

PENHOOK, Va. - Willie L. Kasey, 80, of 3641 Water Wheel Square, Randallstown, Md., formerly of Penhook, died Monday afternoon, July 1, 2002, at the residence.

Born March 12, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jessie Casey and Annie Lee Casey, who survives.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired iron worker with Albert Union Iron Workers Inc. and was a member of the Metropolitian Baptist Church in New York.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of Penhook, include his wife, Cheryl Casey of the residence; two daughters, Sharon Gibbs of New York City and Sylvia D. Casey of Bronx, N.Y.; one son, Wayne Casey Sr. of Randallstown, Md.; four sisters, Estelle Musgrove and Vaughny Mae Casey, both of Washinton, D.C., Marie Bennett and Ozella Newman, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven brothers, James Casey and Brady Casey, both of Washington, D.C., Julian Casey, Lonnie Casey, and Woodson Casey, all of Penhook, Donald Casey and Henry Eggleston, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Pearl Jordan, Everlean Henderson and Elsie Brown; and three brothers, George Casey, Robert Lewis Casey, and Herman Casey.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Penhook with Elder Henry Eggleston Sr. officiating. Interment will follow at Kasey Family Cemetery in Penhook. Viewing will be held 2-3 p.m. Saturday at the church.
