Harold Sager
Harold L. Sager, 80, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at Milcroft Retirement Center in Newark, Del.
Born April 17, 1917, in Danville, he was a son of Dr. Washington Budd Sager and Helen Newman Sager.
He was married
to Ann Thomas Sager, who died June 2, 1995.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He was associated with DuPont for more than 40 years in sales and employee relations departments.
In April of 1980, he retired and moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he resided until this past December.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn N. Sager of Newark, Del.; a son, Thomas L. Sager of Wilmington, Del.; a sister, Mary S. Martin of Farmville; a brother, Dr. Samuel O. Sager of Venice, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by four brothers, E. Douglas Sager, Dr. Frederick N. Sager, Dr. William L. Sager and Donald L. Sager.
A private graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Richard Cobb.

David Schauffner
David M. Schauffner, 71, 1702 Buckhorn Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 18, 1926, in Rivesville, W. Va., he was the son of the late Otto O. and Dorothea Hood Schauffner.
He was married
to Betty J. Collins Schauffner, who survives. They were married
June 27, 1953, in Fairmont, W. Va. They resided there until September 1993. They then moved to Danville for retirement.
In faithful service to God, he served as an elder of the Apostolic Church for 50 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Marie Schauffner Goben and her husband, Robert G. Goben, of New Orleans, La.; two sisters, Virginia S. Layman of Deland, Fla., and Mary S. Hutson of Shinnston, W. Va.
He was predeceased by a brother, John Schauffner.
Other survivors include: Paul and Carroll Miller and family of Fairfax, William J. and Donna Headley and children, of Danville, Bradley R. and Debbie Headley and children, of Mt. Morris, Penn., and Shelby Elaine Headley of Danville.
He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Jessie M. Greathouse of Fairfax, and her husband, Bernard, of Morgantown, W. Va.
He is also survived by dear friends Tom and Nola Headley of Danville.
Family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home, West Main St., Danville, from 7 to 8:30 tonight, Jan. 16, 1998.
Funeral services will be at Swicegood Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998. Burial at Danville Memorial Gardens.
Violet Yates
Violet Booth Yates, 92, 521 Beech Hollow Road, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 14, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center, where she had resided for 16 months.
Born May 23, 1905, in South Boston, she was a daughter of Allie Booth and Cora Robertson Booth Rush.
She was first married
to Mosesell Surratt, who predeceased her. She was later married
to Lewis Yates, who also predeceased her.
For 45 years, she had lived in the Stokesland community.
She had worked for Dan River Inc., in her earlier years and was a homemaker.
She was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Ola Cobb and Mary Newby, both of Danville; a brother, Minion Booth of Danville; two sisters, Elsie Hyler of Bachelors Hall and Doris Travis of Danville; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by two sons, Allie Surratt and Winfred Surratt.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gilmer Setliff and the Rev. Roy Taylor. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence off Ferry Road and also at the residence of Diane Newcomb, 426 Oak Forest Circle.
Geraldine Adams
PORTSMOUTH - Geraldine Craig Adams was born on May 7, 1930, in Altavista. She was the eldest daughter of James and Lena Craig, who resided on Highland Court (formerly Pickett Street) for 50 years.
Geraldine is survived by a sister, Maxine C. Whitt of North Main Street and a brother, Richard Scott Craig of Claiborne Street.
She was predeceased by two brothers, James Conrad Craig and Earl Thomas Craig.
Gerry was married
to Douglas C. Adams, of Bellevue Street, in November 1948. Together they raised three children, Fara A. Caldwell of Hanover, Douglas ("Bo" or "Buck") C. Adams of Bedford and Lisa A. Quigley of Portsmouth.
Geraldine was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She spent her adult life listening to and offering support to her family.
Geraldine died in her home on Jan. 15, 1998, following hip replacement surgery in December.
She is survived by her children, a sister and a brother and six grandchildren, Jared D. Adams of Harrisonburg, Matthew Caldwell and Sara Jane Caldwell, both of Hanover, and Patrick B. Smith, Megan E. Smith and Travis C. Quigley, all of Portsmouth.
Visitation will be at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home on North Main Street Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, 7-8:30 p.m.
Graveside services will be at Schoolfield cemetery on Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial donations be sent to Danville Life Saving Crew.
Bertha Brafford
GOODE - Bertha Allgood Brafford, 88, 125 Whitcomb Lane, formerly of Danville, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Avante Nursing Home in Lynchburg.
Born Jan. 28, 1909, in Boyton, she was a daughter of William Thomas Allgood and Susie Jane Adams Allgood.
She was married
to Prentice Carrington Brafford, who died in 1940.
She was retired from Belk Leggett, where she worked in the children's department for many years.
She was a member of Mosley Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda S. Brafford of Lynchburg; a son, Melvin Brafford of Goode; a sister, Virginia L. Allgood of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.
Evonne Cook
GRETNA - Evonne Shields Cook, 54, 1700 W. Gretna Road, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998.
Born April 16, 1943, in Danville, she was a daughter of Roncie V. Shields and Virginia Hedrick Shields.
She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Gretna.
Survivors include two sons, D. Warren Cook of Pittsville and Stacy Cook of Gretna; a sister, Patricia S. Rowland of Gretna; her stepmother, Mae T. Shields of Gretna; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Thomas Roncaglione. Burial will be in the Shields Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her son, D. Warren Cook, 5379 Pittsville Road, Pittsville.
Jesse Gunnell
Jesse Ray Gunnell, 73, 640 Westview Drive, died suddenly Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a day in the hospital.
Born Aug. 30, 1924, in Danville, he was the son of Robert Gunnell and Minnie Eanes Gunnell.
He lived part of his life in Danville and then moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., where he worked for Veterans Administration as director of admissions. Later, he was transferred to Roanoke. In 1988, he retired and moved back to Danville.
He was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church, where he served as church pianist.
He also conducted music programs for Roman Eagle Memorial Home and Gretna Health Care.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart.
Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Dewberry and Hazel Fowler, both of Danville.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence H. Gunnell and Harry Wilson Gunnell; and one sister, Annie Gunnell Bradley.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Timberlake Baptist Church by the Rev. Jimmy Pruitt and the Rev. Gilmer Setliff. Burial will be in Leemont cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.

Ethel Thomas
Ethel Lee Pannell Thomas, 72, 662 Lee St., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 18, 1925, in Danville, she was a daughter of Willie M. Pannell and Gertrude Holiness.
She was a shift worker for Southern Processor.
She was a member of Bellview Baptist Church.
Survivors include seven sons, Harold E. Thomas Jr. and Bryan K. Thomas, both of Danville, and Michael E. Thomas and Johnth R. Thomas, both of Richmond, and James F. Thomas of Lawrenceville, Sidney W. Thomas of Landover, Md., and Dexter R. Thomas of Petersburg; two daughters, Harriett T. Price and Yvonne A. Wimbush, both of Danville; two brothers, Willie Gant Pannell and Joe Louis Pannell, both of Danville; a sister, Callie P. Brandon of Danville; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Bellview Baptist Church by the Rev. James Cabell. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
There will be a viewing between 4 and 8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family is at the residence.
Helen Giguiere
SALEM - Helen Saddler McGuire Giguiere, 84, a resident of Richfield Nursing Center in Salem, died in a local hospital Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, after a short illness.
The daughter of Thomas Norman Saddler and Pearl Murphy Cole Saddler, she was a native and long-time resident of Danville and had lived in Richfield since November 1996.
A member of Riverview Baptist Church, she was employed by Dan River Inc. for 38 years before retiring in 1977.
She is survived by her son, Earl E. McGuire Jr.; daughter-in-law, Roberta King McGuire, of Salem; four grandchildren, Amy Lynn McGuire of Sacramento, Calif., Patrick Eugene McGuire of Virginia Beach, Kathryn McGuire Hurst of Richmond, and Michael Robert McGuire of Roanoke; she is also survived by four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. The Rev. Robert H. Martin of Danville, a member of the family, will officiate.
The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
