Richard 'Dick' Reed Sr.
Richard Hartman "Dick" Reed Sr., 65, of 3460 Sandy Creek Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at his residence.
Mr. Reed was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Quakertown, Penn., the son of Elwood McGargle Reed and Lillian Hartman Reed.
He was married
to Mary Elizabeth Hankins Reed, who survives at the residence.
Mr. Reed had a great interest in horses since the age of eight years old. He was a member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association.
Mr. Reed was a member of the United States Navy in which he was an AMS 2nd Class.
He was a member of American Legion Post 325.
Mr. Reed was employed by the Virginia Department of Highways for 30 years before retiring.
He as a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church.
Besides his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, Richard Hartman Reed Jr. of the residence; three daughters, Lillian Ann Reed Cassada of Blairs, Jane Lynn Reed Sartin of Providence, N.C., and Mary Ellen Reed Wright of Axton; three sons-in-law, Steven A. Cassada of Blairs, David S. Sartin Jr. of Providence, N.C., and M. David Wright of Axton; a brother, Elwood H. Reed of Emmaus, Penn.; a sister-in-law, Eva. H. Reed of Emmaus, Penn.; three sisters, Frances R. Myers, Doris R. Egner and Jane R. Edge, all of Quakertown, Penn.; two brothers-in-law, Ruben Myers and Donald Egner, both of Quakertown, Penn.; and five grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Cassada, Holt Thomas Cassada, both of Blairs, and David Sledge Sartin III and Daniel Motley Sartin, both of Providence, N.C., and Cody Marie Wright of Axton.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Whitmell United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Cannon. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens, where military graveside honors will be given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 3460 Sandy Creek Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Whitmell United Methodist Church or the Tunstall Volunteer Fire Department.

Lucille Ronk
Lucille Chesher Ronk, 77, 592 Arlington Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at the residence of her son, 124 Oakridge Lane.
Born May 13, 1920, in Danville, she was the daughter of Walter Chesher and Maude Chesher.
She was married
to Everette Vernell Ronk, who died July 1, 1984.
Since 1968, she had been a resident of Danville, and was formerly affiliated with Surf Seafood and Steakhouse on Piney Forest Road.
She was a member of Riverview Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Bernard "Dick" Dickens of Danville and Buddy Earl Dickens of Montross; a stepdaughter, Shirley McDermott of Lothian, Md.; two brothers, Garland Chesher and Walter Chesher Jr., both of Danville; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Riverview Baptist Church by the Rev. Duane Blevins. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her son, Bernard "Dick" Dickens, 124 Oakridge Lane.
Nell Savarese
BUFFALO JUNCTION - Nell Griffin Savarese, 70, 493 Locust Lane, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston.
Born Feb. 1, 1927, in Mecklenburg County, she was a daughter of Taylor Floyd Griffin and Willie Glasscock Griffin, who survives.
She was married
to A.J. "Scooter" Savarese, who survives.
She was a retired employee of Thompson Pharmacy.
She was a member of St. Paschal Catholic Church, the South Boston Chapter of A.A.R.P. and Dixie Beam Bottle Club.
In addition to her husband and mother, both of Buffalo Junction, survivors include a daughter, Linda Lee Hodges of Buffalo Junction; two sons, Ronald Ray Hodges of Danville and Michael Hodges of Buffalo Junction; three sisters, Glenna Nunn of Clarksville and Jean Daniel and Helen Blanks, both of Buffalo Junction; a brother, Raymond Griffin of Covington, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paschal Catholic Church by Father Mathias Newell. Burial will be in Gravel Hill Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 9 tonight at Brooks Funeral Home, South Boston, and other times at the residence.
Betty Vaughan
A memorial service for Betty Kegley Spencer Vaughan, 69, 318 East Thomas St., will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Robert Vermillion. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
She died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center following several years of declining health and five days in the hospital.
Born July 25, 1928, in Danville, she was a daughter of Ephriam V. Kegley and Pearl Elizabeth Williams Kegley.
She was first married
to Herbert Spencer, who died Aug. 27, 1971. She was later married
to Ruben Benjamin Vaughan, who died Jan. 24, 1989.
She was a member of Westover Baptist Church.
A life long resident of Danville, she was a homemaker and a foster mother for more than 100 children. She also was a sitter at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Survivors include two daughters, Jackie S. Hoke of Danville and Judy Spencer Hicks of Charleston, S.C.; a son, Jerry Steven Spencer of Hayesville; two stepdaughters, Alease Vaughan Meaders of Little Rock, Ark., and Louise Spencer Bennett of Chatham; a stepson, William Curtis Vaughan of Chatham; a sister, Edna E. Gaster of Semora, N.C.; three brothers, Jack E. Kegley of Staunton, William R. Kegley of Tampa, Fla., and Charles O. Kegley of Aoahu, Hawaii; seven grandchildren, several step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Madeline K. Karavias; and a brother, Donald R. Kegley.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Naomi Wright
Naomi Louise Whitener Wright, 88, formerly of Heritage Towers, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she had been a resident since March of 1995. She had been in declining health for five years.
Born June 6, 1909, in Huntsville, Ala., she was a daughter of William A. Whitener and Cynthia Reid Whitener.
She was married
to Joseph Benjamin Wright Sr., who died in October 1960.
In 1971, she moved back to the Danville area after retiring from Stewart Department Store in Baltimore, where she worked as a drape designer.
She was a member of Fourth Street Methodist Church, Baltimore.
She was the first resident to live at Heritage Towers in Danville.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen W. Wiles of Ringgold; two sons, Bobby G. Wright of Baltimore and Jerry Steven Wright of Danville; a sister, Gertrude W. Nichols of Danville; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Joseph Benjamin Wright Jr.; and two daughters, Carolyn Wright Brincefield and Frances Geraldine Wright.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Michael Wiles and the Rev. David Ball. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Helen W. Wiles, 1237 Ringgold Road, Ringgold.
Abraham Baker Jr.
JAVA - Abraham Baker Jr., 57, 220 Church Road, died Tuesday night, Jan. 20, 1998, at Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville.
Born March 11, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Abraham Baker Sr., and Christine Walker Baker, who survives.
He was married
to Joyce Baker, who also survives.
He was a farmer and a member of Riceville Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Gretna and his mother of Nathalie, survivors include two sons, Frank Baker of Danville and Abraham Baker III of Richmond; three daughters, Shirley Thomas, Christine Baker and Samantha Baker, all of Richmond; three brothers, Thomas Baker of Alexandria, Charles Ray Baker of Danville and Sylvester Baker of Java; two sisters, Pency Bobbitt of Newark, N.J., and Julia Womack of Richmond; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Riceville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his wife, Joyce Baker, 204 Zebra Road, Gretna.

Ann Farmer
Ann Judson Farmer, 48, 145 Arnett Blvd., Apt. F4, died suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at her residence.
Born Aug. 12, 1949, in Danville, she was a daughter of William Ashton Farmer and Kathlen Lee Alderson Brown.
A life long resident of the Danville area, she worked as a teller for First Virginia Bank prior to her retirement.
She was a member of West End Christian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, De De Marlowe of Danville; and a sister, Bunny Farmer Hall of Richmond.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Kenneth Glass
SOUTH BOSTON - Kenneth Harrison Glass, 67, 1836 Vaughan St., died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born April 21, 1930, in Halifax County, he was a son of John Adams Glass and Beatrice Owen Glass.
He was married
to Alice Crute Glass.
He was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church.
During the Korean Conflict, he served in the Navy.
He was an employee of Burlington Industries for 23 years, and was later self employed as owner and operator of Eastside Motors and Tackle Shop.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include two sons, Tony Harrison Glass of Snowhill, N.C., and John Adams Glass of Oxford, N.C.; a daughter, Judy Glass Koontz of Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers, Robert H. Glass of Greensboro, N.C., and Carroll O. Glass of Danville; three sisters, Janie Boaze, Louise Andrews and Betty Kratz, all of Danville; six grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. John Fariss. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

Charles Harmon Sr.
Charles Hansel Harmon Sr., 58, 626 Cardinal Place, Apt. 2, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at his residence after a decline in health for a number of years.
Born Sept. 4, 1939, in Floyd County, he was a son of Charlie Wade Harmon and Annie Burnet Harmon.
For a number of years, he lived in Virginia Beach and worked at Norfolk Virginian Pilot Ledger Star Newspaper till he became disabled.
He had been living in Danville for the past five years.
He was of the Methodist faith and had been a member of Virginia National Guard.
Survivors include a son, Charles Hansel Harmon Jr. of Danville; two sisters, Barbara Edwards of Danville and Iva Hubbard of Eden, N.C.; two brothers, Ira Wade Harmon of Danville and William Ray Harmon of Virginia Beach; and a grandson.
The family will be at the residence of his sister, Barbara Edwards, 611 Franklin Turnpike, Danville.

Charlie Hudson Jr.
HALIFAX - Charlie Dabney Hudson Jr., 94, 7026 L.P. Bailey Memorial Hwy., died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at Woodview Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 3, 1903, in Halifax County, he was the son of Charlie D. Hudson Sr., and Annie Shapard Hudson.
He was married
to Mary Riddle Hudson, who predeceased him.
He was a lifetime member of McKendree United Methodist Church and was a mason with Halifax Lodge 96.
Survivors include a daughter, Jane H. Friend of Halifax; a son, Dabney Hudson of Halifax; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at McKendree United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tim Earnhardt and the Rev. Mike Osborne. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 7036 L.P. Bailey Memorial Hwy., Halifax.
