'Cowboy' Jones
Willard Irvin "Cowboy" Jones, 67, 156 Forestdale Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham, N.C., after three years of declining health and the past two weeks in the hospital.
Born Feb. 17, 1931, in Danville, he was a son of Samuel Irvin Jones and Bessie Pettigrew Jones.
A life long resident of Danville, he had worked in the produce department of Old Dutch Super Market for more than 20 years.
He was a member of American Legion Post 325 and was of the Baptist faith.
He served with the Virginia National Guard 560th Field Artillery Unit, C Battery, when the unit was activated in 1951 and called into regular Army duty at Camp Polk, La.
Survivors include two sons, Willard Irvin Jones Jr. of Texas and Leeland Jones of Suffolk; a daughter, Landa J. Daughtery of Suffolk; two sisters, Polly J. Williams of Danville and Beryl J. Campbell of Ringgold; and four grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, Raymond L. "Wimpy" Jones.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Howard C. Green and the Rev. Rebecca Yow, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Polly J. Williams, 1740 Kentuck Road, Danville, State Route 729.

Betty Pruitt
CHATHAM - Betty Jean Satterfield Pruitt, 57, 1520 Jones Mill Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at her residence after two years of declining health.
Born Oct. 23, 1940, in Halifax, she was a daughter of Bessie Carter Satterfield and William D. Satterfield, who survives.
On July 14, 1956, she was married
to Harvey Keister Pruitt, who died May 17, 1996.
A life long resident of Danville and the Pittsylvania County area, she worked for Dan River, Inc., for 15 years prior to her decline in health.
She was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Brian Keith Pruitt of Danville; a daughter, Michelle Pruitt Burke of Danville; a sister, Ethel Zanon of South Boston; four brothers, J.C. Satterfield, Sonny Satterfield and Odell Satterfield, all of South Boston, and Ernest Satterfield of Scottsburg; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Billy Satterfield.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Clay Knick. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Isam Reed Jr.
Isam Reed Jr., 77, 214 Aye St., died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 30, 1920, in Florence, S.C., he was a son of Isam Reed Sr., and Essie Reed.
He was married
to Lula Adams Reed, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Veola Martin and Louise Williams, both of Danville; two brothers, the Rev. John Reed of Florence, S.C., and Willie Reed of Baltimore; a sister, Viola Johnson of Stratford, Conn.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. Tony Adams. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Richard 'Dick' Reed Sr.
Richard Hartman "Dick" Reed Sr., 65, of 3460 Sandy Creek Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at his residence.
Mr. Reed was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Quakertown, Penn., the son of Elwood McGargle Reed and Lillian Hartman Reed.
He was married
to Mary Elizabeth Hankins Reed, who survives at the residence.
Mr. Reed had a great interest in horses since the age of eight years old. He was a member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association.
Mr. Reed was a member of the United States Navy in which he was an AMS 2nd Class.
He was a member of American Legion Post 325.
Mr. Reed was employed by the Virginia Department of Highways for 30 years before retiring.
He as a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church.
Besides his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, Richard Hartman Reed Jr. of the residence; three daughters, Lillian Ann Reed Cassada of Blairs, Jane Lynn Reed Sartin of Providence, N.C., and Mary Ellen Reed Wright of Axton; three sons-in-law, Steven A. Cassada of Blairs, David S. Sartin Jr. of Providence, N.C., and M. David Wright of Axton; a brother, Elwood H. Reed of Emmaus, Penn.; a sister-in-law, Eva. H. Reed of Emmaus, Penn.; three sisters, Frances R. Myers, Doris R. Egner and Jane R. Edge, all of Quakertown, Penn.; two brothers-in-law, Ruben Myers and Donald Egner, both of Quakertown, Penn.; and five grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Cassada, Holt Thomas Cassada, both of Blairs, and David Sledge Sartin III and Daniel Motley Sartin, both of Providence, N.C., and Cody Marie Wright of Axton.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Whitmell United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Cannon. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens, where military graveside honors will be given by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 3460 Sandy Creek Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Whitmell United Methodist Church or the Tunstall Volunteer Fire Department.

Abraham Baker Jr.
JAVA - Abraham Baker Jr., 57, 220 Church Road, died Tuesday night, Jan. 20, 1998, at Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville.
Born March 11, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Abraham Baker Sr., and Christine Walker Baker, who survives.
He was married
to Joyce Baker, who also survives.
He was a farmer and a member of Riceville Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of Gretna and his mother of Nathalie, survivors include two sons, Frank Baker of Danville and Abraham Baker III of Richmond; three daughters, Shirley Thomas, Christine Baker and Samantha Baker, all of Richmond; three brothers, Thomas Baker of Alexandria, Charles Ray Baker of Danville and Sylvester Baker of Java; two sisters, Pency Bobbitt of Newark, N.J., and Julia Womack of Richmond; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Riceville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Gene Bobbitt Sr.
Gene Randolph Bobbitt Sr., 58, 129 Fairfield Ave., died Friday morning, Jan. 23, 1998, at his residence after a eight year decline in health.
Born Feb. 26, 1939, in Danville, he was a son of Riley Bobbitt and Estelle Mayhew Bobbitt, who survives.
He was married
to Hilda McGuire Bobbitt, who also survives.
A life long resident of Danville, he worked at Ireson Construction Co., until he became disabled.
He attended the Church of the Nazarene on Franklin Turnpike.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Libby Bobbitt and Dana Bobbitt, both of Danville; two sons, Gene Bobbitt II and Timmy Bobbitt, both of Danville; and a brother, Donald Bobbitt of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Ronald E. Graham.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Thelma Moran
Thelma Robinson Moran, 79, 126 Mimosa St., died early Friday morning, Jan. 23, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 21, 1918, in Danville, she was the daughter of Monroe Jackson Robinson and Bessie Denton Robinson.
She was married
to Jess Willard Moran, who died May 1, 1997.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was retired from Dan River, Inc., as a sewing machine operator.
She was a charter member of Riveroak Church of God.
Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Warner of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, Arlie Moran, Darrell Moran and Keith Moran, all of Danville; a brother, Dillard Robinson of Martinsville; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Riveroak Church of God by the Rev. Tim Nuckles. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.
The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the church, and other times at the residence.

Atlas Parsons
A graveside service for Atlas Huckabee Parsons, 79, formerly of 323 Kemper Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Dana Hunt.
She died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after a year of declining health.
Born Dec. 6, 1918, in Danville, she was the daughter of Atlas Huckabee and Flora Smith Huckabee.
She was married
to Berkley W. Parsons, who died March 28, 1994.
She was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.
She was owner and operator of Azalea Motel in Wilmington, N.C.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Eula Stroud
Eula Liner Stroud, 90, 3563 Westover Drive, died early Friday morning, Jan. 23, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 5, 1907, in Union, S.C., she was a daughter of George W. Liner and Hattie Mae Weathers Liner.
She was married
to Paul E. Stroud, who died Feb. 10, 1992.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son, Gearry Stroud of Danville; a brother, Lemuel Liner of Durham, N.C.; three sisters, Merzie Chenault of Durham, N.C., and Ruth Castevens and Vinnie Burton, both of Danville; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, George W. Stroud and James T. Stroud.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Duane O. Blevins. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Elmo Tate
A graveside service for Elmo Swanson Tate, 90, 324 Lansbury Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Michael Campbell.
He died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at his residence after a year of declining health.
Born April 4, 1907, in Danville, he was a son of John Robert Tate and Ella Newman Tate Willis.
On March 31, 1934, he was married
to Pauline Graham Tate, who survives.
He was a 1932 graduate of International Correspondence School with a degree in Electrial Engineering.
In 1933, he was employed by Dan River Mills Inc., as a power house operator for the Riverside Division. In 1938, he was employed by the City of Danville's Electric Department as the first power house operator at the City's Pinnacles Hydro-Electric Plant until 1942. He was then employed by Tennessee Valley Authority as a power house operator for several plants in their system.
In 1952, he began work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a power house operator at Buggs Island Dam Power Plant (the John H. Kerr Dam) until his retirement in 1974.
In 1978, he returned to live in Danville.
He held several U.S. patents for his design of electrical switches and relays for power transmission.
He was a member of South Hill United Methodist Church in South Hill.
In addition to his wife of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, survivors include a daughter, Nancy T. McFall of Danville; a brother, James R. Tate of Martinsville; two sisters, Elnora T. Hammond of Danville and Thelma "Girlie" T. Thomas of Reidsville, N.C.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Malcolm O. Tate and Roy L. Tate; and a sister, Hessie T. Pruitt.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Nancy T. McFall, 610 Greenwich Circle, off North Main Street.
