Joseph Dameron Davis
Joseph "Joe" Dameron Davis, 61, of Yanceyville, N.C., died peacefully in his sleep at home early Saturday morning. Mr. Davis was born in Warren County in 1936 to the parents of Edward Davis and Harriet Tharrington Davis. After graduating from John Graham High School in Warrenton in 1954, he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1954-1958, and was married
to Annice Perkinson, also of Warren County, in 1956. Upon returning from service, Mr. Davis attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he completed his degree in Pharmacy. He moved to Yanceyville and becaem a partner in Yanceyville Drug Company with his brother Tommy Davis in 1969.
As a member of Prospect United Methodist Church in west Yanceyville, Mr. Davis served in various capacities including Administrative Board Chairman, Missions Coordinator, Stewardship Committee, Student Intern Committee and Organ Committee. He was an active choir member and a Certified Lay Speaker. Mr. Davis traveled to Armenia in 1993 with the Project AGAPE Medical Team, and was selected as Propsect United Methodist Church and Burlington District Board of Laity for the United Methodist Church.
Mr. Davis was a past president of the Caswell County Chamber of Commerce and served 12 years on the Family Medical Center board of directors. He was a past president of Caswell County Ducks Unlimited and a past board member for the Cherokee Council of Boy Scouts of America.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Annice Perkinson Davis, of the home; a son, Tim Davis of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Bettye Barto of Greensboro; three brothers, Tommy Davis of Yanceyville, Charles Davis of Winston-Salem and William Davis of Reidsville; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Davis of Winston-Salem, a son-in-law, Harry Barto of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Rachel Davis and Hunter Davis of Winston-Salem, and Julianna Barto of Greensboro; and many nephews, nieces and other family members.
Funeral service wil be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Wilkerson, the Rev. Joe Lister and the Rev. Charles Davis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 3 to 6 p.m. at Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville.

Clarence Dixon
CHESAPEAKE - Clarence Dixon, 70, of 231 Old Greensboro Highway, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in Chesapeake General Hospital.
Born April 19, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of West Dixon and Evelyn Carter Dixon.
He was a retired truck driver for Taylor Ransom Trucking Co. and was a member of United Holiness Church.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Dixon, of the residence; two sons, Charles Dixon of Blairs and Mark Dixon of Danville; eight daughters, Texis Poteat, Marnise Fitzgerald, Clarise McCaine, Frances Dixon, Eloise Whitlock, Marie Carter, Katherine Carter and Dorothy Calloway, all of Danville; five brothers, Thomas Dixon of Chatham, Buck Dixon, Robert Lee Dixon, Bobby Dixon and Lonnie Dixon, all of Danville; four sisters, Gladys Webb, Stella Dixon, and Mary Lizzie Walker, all of Danville and Brenda Burge of Charlottesville; 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral for Dixon will be conducted 2:30 p.m. today from Christ Temple Holiness Church by Elder Z.B. Talley Jr. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will be at the residence. Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Johnnie David English
Johnnie David English, 62, of 300 Owen Mill Road, Gretna, died Saturday, January 24, 1998 in Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born May 19, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Jimmie Snow English and Beulah Wilkes English.
He was a member of Gretna Pentecostal Holiness Church and a retired employee of Klopman.
He is survived by three sons, Johnny E. English, William David English and Al English, all of Gretna; one daughter, Cindy English King of Gretna; one brother, Rufus English of Lynchburg; three sisters, Elizabeth English of Lynchburg, Relma Gilmore of Altavista and Mildred E. Owen of Gretna; and four grandhildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at gretna Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Jerry Blevins. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, Al English, 285 Azalea Drive in Gretna.
Minnie Willis Griffin
Minnie Willis Griffin, 83, of 861 Kentuck Church Road in Ringgold, died Saturday morning, Jan. 24, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a one year decline in health.
She was born in Danvile on May 9, 1914, a daughter of the late Robert Lee Willis and Claudia Lacy Willis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm "Mike" Wesley Griffin, who died June 21, 1984. She was also predeceased by a son, Aubrey L. Griffin.
She had spent all of her life in the Danville and Ringgold area. She was employed with Dan River Inc. as a shipping clerk at the Hylton Hall order department before retiring, and she was a member of Full Gospel Fellowhsip Church.
She is survived by one son, Bobby E. Griffin of Ringgold; one sister, Ethel Chapman of Lynchburg; three granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Full Gospel Fellowship Church by the Rev. Roger Ewing and Pastor David Cabel. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at 822 Kristen lane, off of Afton Road.
Naomi Hudson
Naomi Elliott Tate Hudson, 80, formerly of 610 Brightwell Drive, died Jan. 24, 1998, in Rocky Face, Ga. She had been in declining health for three years.
Born July 27, 1917, in Danville, she was a daughter of William Guster Elliott and Cara Buchannan Elliott.
Mrs. Hudson lived her life in the Danville area, where she worked at Dan River Inc. in the designing department prior to her retirement in 1982 and in 1995 Mrs. Hudson moved to Rocky Face, Ga., to reside with her family. She was a member of Keen Street Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the church choir and in her early years she traveled and sang with her family as a gospel trio.
She was first married
to Malcolm O. Tate, who died July 8, 1974, and was later married
to Otis Lee Hudson, who died Feb. 11, 1993.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy Raye Mahan of Rocky Face, Ga.; a son-in-law, Wayne Mahan, also of Rocky Face; a granddaughter, Teresa Jill Mahan and a grandson, Wesley Wayne Mahan, both of Rocky Face; a stepson, Henry Hudson, and a stepgrandson, Kevin Hudson, both of Alexandria; two sisters, Gladys Burns and Mary Carter, both of Danville; four brothers, Paul Elliott and Daniel Elliott, both of Danville, David Elliott of Hampton, and John Elliott of Newport News.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from the Westover chapel of Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home by the Rev. Michael Campbell and the Rev. George Rumney with burial in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 5 to 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Bernice S. Motley
NORFOLK - Bernice Slayton Motley, 72, of 2332 Wharton Court, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, in her residence after a year-long battle with kidney cancer. Mrs. Motley was a native of Windfall, and had resided in Norfolk since 1952. She was formerly employed as a note teller at Virginia National bank, and a customer service representative at both VEPCO and Virginia Natural Gas Co. She was a member of Norfolk Garden Baptist Church, the Local 80 I.B.E.W. Retirees Club, and the Virginia Natural Gas Retirees Club.
Mrs. Motley was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Samuel Slayton, and a brother, Julian C. Slayton. She is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Samuel L. Motley; two sons, the Rev. Phillip E. Motley and his wife, Jenny, of Roanoke, and Steven A. Motley of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Dr. Aubrey R. Salyton of Blacksburg; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Slayton of Blacksburg and Doris Slayton of Virginia Beach; two grandsons, Ian. C. Motley and Evan L. Motley, both of Roanoke.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at Norfolk Garden Baptist Church by the Rev. David Hillis and the Rev. Robert S. Guelich. Interment
will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Highland Burial Park, State Rt. 29, in Danville, by the Rev. Julian Motley. The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home in Virginia Beach, from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Sentara Norfolk Hospice or to the Missionary Fund of Norfolk Garden Baptist Church.
Mrs. Motley was a strong Chirstian, a loving wife, mother and granny who served her Lord best through her devotion to her family and friends. She left us a rich legacy of fond memories, good advice and warm feelings to comfort and guide us as we continue our own pilgrimmages of faith with hope and in love.
Eula Stroud
Eula Liner Stroud, 90, 3563 Westover Drive, died early Friday morning, Jan. 23, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 5, 1907, in Union, S.C., she was a daughter of George W. Liner and Hattie Mae Weathers Liner.
She was married
to Paul E. Stroud, who died Feb. 10, 1992.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son, Gearry Stroud of Danville; a brother, Lemuel Liner of Durham, N.C.; three sisters, Merzie Chenault of Durham, N.C., and Ruth Castevens and Vinnie Burton, both of Danville; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, George W. Stroud and James T. Stroud.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Duane O. Blevins. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Mattie Bowe
Mattie Allen Bowe, 66, of 1348 College Park Extension, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998 at her residence.
Born Feb. 2, 1931, in Blanch, N.C., she was the daughter of Curnel Albert Allen and Jennie V. Brown Allen. She was married
to Charlie Lee Bowe Jr., who predeceased her.
She was employed at Dan River Mills for many years and was a member of River Zion Baptist Church in Blanch.
Survivors include one son, Colonel L. Bowe of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, M. Delois B. Cabell of Danville and Sharon B. Cobb of Eden, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Irene Mobley of Crown Heights, Md., Catherine B. Chandler of Danville and Lucy B. Chandler of Mercede, Calif.; six sisters, Sally A. Lea of Blanch, Mary Samuels, Claire Coates and Barbara A. Swain, all of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Pauline Clark of Claxton, Ga., and Victoria Saunders of Blairs; one brother, George M. Allen of Danville; five grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home on today from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. All other times at the residence.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at River Zion Baptist Church in Blanch by Rev. Stephen Tyrone Thornton. Interment
will follow at the church cemetery.

Minnie Griffin

James Meissner II
James Robert Meissner II, 64, of 602 Lansbury Drive, died Sunday Jan. 25, 1998 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C..
Born on May 27, 1933, in Skipwith, he was the son of the late James Robert Meissner and Linda Thomasson Meissner Wilkinson.
He was a graduate of Danville Technical Institute and attended VPI. He worked as an associate professor in mechanical technologies for Danville Community College from 1960 to 1992, when he retired. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a trustee. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was married
on Sept. 28, 1955, to Judith Ramsey Meissner, who survives. He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara M. Shotwell.
Other survivors include one daughter, Linda M. Huggins of Danville; one son, J. Robert Meissner III of Danville; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at North Main Baptist Church by Dr. Eddie Davis. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 26, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
Carroll Owen
Deacon Carroll J. Owen, 49, of 1133 Birch-Elmo Road, South Boston, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, in Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
He was born in Halifax County on August 11, 1948, to Jefferson and Vernell W. Owen, who survive.
He was married
to Belva Terry Owen, who survives.
He was a member of the Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the board of deacons and board of trustees and was a member of the gospel chorus and usher board, Sunday school superintendent, assistant Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and youth mentor.
He graduated from Mary McCleod Bethune High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He was a member of the New Vernon Lodge #285. He was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
In addition to his wife of the residence and parents of South Boston, he is survived by two sons, Avery D. Owen of Memphis, Tenn., and Carroll D. Owen of the home; two grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Eldridge of Sutherlin; and two brothers, Jerry L. and Ronnie E. Owen, both of South Boston.
Funeral service will be Tuesday at noon at the Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church, by Rev. Arthur E. Crews. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be held at the Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Monday from 6-8 p.m. The family will be at the residence, 1133 Birch-Elmo Road. Howerton Funeral Home, Inc., is in charge of the arrangements.
Woodrow Williams
Woodrow L. Williams Sr., 77, of 81 Bishop Ave., died at his residence Sunday afternoon, Jan. 25, 1998, after a decline in health for four years.
He was born in Rockingham County, N.C., on March 31, 1920, a son of the late Joseph P. Williams and Lettie Bell Williams Williams.
He was married
to Bertha Handy Williams, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
He had spent most of his life in Caswell County, N.C., and Danville, where he worked at Dan River Inc., for 31 years before retiring in 1981. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the American Legion Memorial Post #325.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include one daughter, Annette W. Scearce of Danville; one son, Woodrow L. Williams Jr. of Danville; one step-son, Jimmy Handy of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; three brothers, Lawrence A. Williams of Danville, Joseph T. Williams Jr. of Yanceyville, N.C., and Howard L. Williams of Walnut Cove, N.C.; three sisters, Annie Bell Barnam of Greensboro, N.C., Sally Mae Williams of Walnut Cove, and Marie Williams of Kernersville, N.C.; four grandsons; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jim Kleinfelter, where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post #325 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home on Monday evening from 7-8:30 p.m, and at other time will beat the residence, 81 Bishop Ave.
Helen Williamson
Helen Ragsdale Williamson, 93, formerly of 785 Doe St., died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at her niece's residence, 153 Andes Drive.
Born Sept. 25, 1904, in Halifax, she was the daughter of the Lewis Ragsdale and Laura Jennings Ragsdale.
She was a member of Loyal Baptist Church and worked at Stratford College.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Williamson.
Survivors include two nieces, Elizabeth Price of Danville and Sally Reyes of Durham, N.C.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at L.H. Brooks and Brothers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Lovell Maxwell Jr. Burial will be in Danville National cemetery. The family will receive friends at 153 Andes Drive.
