Joseph Blankenship
Joseph Asbury Blankenship, 84, 124 Tamworth Drive, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several weeks of declining health.
Born Aug. 23, 1913, in Lynchburg, he was a son of Thomas L. Blankenship and Ella Catherine Gill Blankenship.
On Dec. 19, 1937, he was married
to Dorothy Davis Blankenship, who survives.
He worked in management for C & P Telephone for 40 years before retiring.
He was a member of Telephone Pioneers, and a past member of the Elks Club, Photography Club, Seminole Archery Club, Tuscarora Country Club, vice president of the Laurel Corporation and the Sertoma Club .
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ron and Brenda Blankenship Taylor of Conyers, Ga.; and a brother, Fred Victor Blankenship of Newport News.

Douglas Burton
SOUTH BOSTON - Douglas Eugene Burton, 29, of Wilborn Avenue, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at his residence.
Born Feb. 11, 1968, in Halifax County, he was a son of Robert B. Burton and Alice L. Boxley, who survive.
He served in the U.S. Army for three years.
In addition to his mother of Alton and his father of Blanch, N.C., survivors include three brothers, Allen Burton of South Boston, Robert Burton of Bland and Thomas Martin of Crystal Hill; a stepsister, Terri Kay of Bellville, Ill.; and two stepbrothers, Thomas Wade and Carson Wade, both of Yanceyville, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Halifax Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Roy Newton.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Powell Funeral Home.
Joseph Galloway
CHATHAM - The Rev. Joseph L. Galloway, 78, 435 Peach St., died Sunday night, Jan. 25, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 17, 1919, in Mt. Airy, N.C., he was a son of James and Delia Galloway.
He was married
to Rebecca K. Galloway, who survives.
He was a member of Corinth Christian Church, and pastored several churches.
He was a past mayor of the Town of Chatham, past chairman of Board of Pittsylvania County Community Action Inc., and treasurer of Pittsylvania County NAACP.
He was a retired educator for Pittsylvania County School System.
He was a U.S. Armed Forces veteran.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Gaylon R. Galloway Hopkins of Birmingham, Ala.; two sons, Elbert L. Galloway of Richmond and Julian V. Galloway of Danville; two sisters, Josephine Galloway of Mt. Airy, N.C., and Rebecca G. Olds of Virginia Beach; three brothers, James Galloway of Pittsburg, William Edward Galloway of Cleveland, and Donald Galloway of New York City; and three grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time with Howerton Funeral Home.
The family is at the residence.
Franklin 'Jack' Jones
MARTINSVILLE - Franklin "Jack" Delano Jones, 64, 708 Orchard St., died Monday morning, Jan. 26, 1998, at his home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel, Eden, N.C., by the Rev. Dr. Ed Kezar, pastor of Riverview Presbyterian Church in Eden. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Reidsville, N.C.
He was born June 29, 1933, in Rockingham County, N.C., to the late O.C. "Buster" Jones and Florence E. Lawson Jones.
He had lived in Martinsville and Henry County since 1958.
He was employed as a teacher and administrator at Henry County Public Schools for 17 years. He was principal of Fieldale Elementary, Ridgeway Elementary and Drewry Mason High schools. He retired from the school system in 1972.
He was the business manager of Children's Medical Center in Martinsville from 1973 to May 1996 and for Dr. Judith M. Szulecki Bunin in Martinsville until his death.
He was a graduate of Leaksville (N.C.) High School, High Point (N.C.) College and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he earned a master's degree in education.
He was a member of Fieldale Rotary Club, Martinsville Lions Club, Civitan Club and a chartered president of Ridgeway Lions Club.
He was a member of Riverview Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Brian Franklin Jones of Martinsville and Keith Delano Jones of Springfield; a daughter, Jeannie Jones Wright of Danville, two granddaughters, Rachel and Caroline Jones, both of Springfield; four sisters, Betty Murphy of Gibsonville, N.C., and Dorothy Knight of Eden, N.C., and Geary Sue Potler of Greensboro, N.C., and Mildred Black of Collinsville; long-time companion and dearest friend, Dr. Judith Szulecki Bunin of Martinsville and her two children, Chris Bunin of Blacksburg and Melissa Bunin of Chapel Hill, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Fair Funeral Home in Eden, N.C., and other times at the residence, 708 Orchard St., Martinsville.
James Meissner II
Funeral services for James Robert Meissner II, 64, of 602 Lansbury Drive, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at North Main Baptist Church by Dr. Eddie Davis. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
He died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
Born on May 27, 1933, in Skipwith, he was the son of the late James Robert Meissner and Linda Thomasson Meissner Wilkinson.
He was a graduate of Danville Technical Institute and attended VPI. He worked as an associate professor in mechanical technologies for Danville Community College from 1960 to 1992, when he retired. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a trustee. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
He was married
on Sept. 28, 1955, to Judith Ramsey Meissner, who survives. He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara M. Shotwell.
Other survivors include one daughter, Linda M. Huggins of Danville; one son, J. Robert Meissner III of Danville; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Archie Moore
CHESAPEAKE - Archie William Moore, 76, 800 block of Rutledge Road, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in Chesapeake.
Born in Pittsylvania County, he was a retired bus driver for Trailways Bus Service.
He was married
to Joyce W. Moore, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Anne Moore Combs of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Frances Farthing, Doris Booth and Hattie Myers; a brother, Billy Moore; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Otey Moore.
Funeral services and burial will be at a later date.

Kurt Sterner
CLERMONT, Fla. - Kurt Eric Sterner, 73, 13108 Anderson Hill Road, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998.
He was married
to Jean Sterner, who survives.
A native of New York, he moved to Clermont in 1980 from Orlando.
He was a member of First Christian Church in Leesburg.
After 27 years, he was a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He was a P-38 and F-86 pilot. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
He was a designer engineer for Martin Marietta, Electronic Warfare Associates and Educational Computer Corp., all of Orlando.
He was owner of Kes Miniatures, and was inventor and patent holder of an electrification system for miniature doll houses.
In addition to his wife of Clermont, survivors include a son, William Kurt Sterner of Danville, Va.; a daughter, Cheryl S. Barrett of Friendship, Maine; his mother, Greta Sterner of Tavares; a stepson, Scott A. McCord of West Palm Beach; two stepdaughters, Pamela J. Pusey of Ft. Belvoir, and Kathi S. Kretzer of West Palm Beach; and seven grandchildren.

'Bunky' Vuncannon
HURT - Adison Glen "Bunky" Vuncannon, 32, 3733 Grit Road, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998.
Born March 27, 1965, in Danville, he was a son of Shirley Power Vuncannon of Hurt and Addison W. Vuncannon and stepmother, Margie Vuncannon of Hurt.
He was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church and a carpenter with Scott Construction.
In addition to his parents, survivors include a brother, Ronald H. Vuncannon of Hurt; maternal grandparents, W. Holland Power and Ruth Tucker Power of Gretna; four stepsisters, Rita Hancock and Cindy Hancock, both of Altavista, Robin Scruggs of Hurt, Denise Moore of Augusta, Ga.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Roger Wilborn. Burial will be in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his mother, Shirley Power Vuncannon, 2221 Shula Drive, Hurt.
Woodrow Williams
Graveside funeral services for Woodrow L. Williams Sr., 77, of 81 Bishop Ave., will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jim Kleinfelter, where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post #325 Honor Guard.
He died at his residence Sunday afternoon, Jan. 25, 1998, after a decline in health for four years.
He was born in Rockingham County, N.C., on March 31, 1920, a son of the late Joseph P. Williams and Lettie Bell Williams Williams.
He was married
to Bertha Handy Williams, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
He had spent most of his life in Caswell County, N.C., and Danville, where he worked at Dan River Inc., for 31 years before retiring in 1981. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the American Legion Memorial Post #325.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include one daughter, Annette W. Scearce of Danville; one son, Woodrow L. Williams Jr. of Danville; one step-son, Jimmy Handy of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; three brothers, Lawrence A. Williams of Danville, Joseph T. Williams Jr. of Yanceyville, N.C., and Howard L. Williams of Walnut Cove, N.C.; three sisters, Annie Bell Barnam of Greensboro, N.C., Sally Mae Williams of Walnut Cove, and Marie Williams of Kernersville, N.C.; four grandsons; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

Thomas Woodson
CASCADE - Thomas Lee Woodson, 71, 114 Wilson St., died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at his residence.
Born April 29, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William R. and Mary Lizzie Glass Wilson.
He was married
to Gladys L. Woodson, who survives.
He was a retired contractor and a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church in Yanceyville, N.C.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five stepsons, Edward Martin, Garry Martin, Odell Martin, Charlie Martin and Darryll Martin, all of Cascade; a daughter, Patricia W. Scales of Greensboro, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Gladious M. Simmons of Axton; five brothers, Jessie W. Woodson, Curtis Woodson, Ira Irby, Raleigh E. Woodson and Bobby Woodson, all of Danville; six sisters, Annie M. Oliver, Viola Woodson, Lindey Saunders and Edna Irby, all of Danville, Lora Jackson of Newark, Del., and Mamie Ward of Baltimore; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Carl Bigelow. Burial will be in the Woodson Family cemetery, Keeling.
Mr. Woodson may be viewed from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

Phyllis Yeaman
Phyllis Kathleen Yeaman, 70, 600 Main St., Apt. 108, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at her residence after several years of declining health.
Born Jan. 16, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Joseph Dameron Yeaman and Lucille Shelton Yeaman.
Prior to her retirement, she worked at Howard Johnson's in Greensboro, N.C., for 20 years as a waitress.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sisters, Edith Doak and Marion Dalton, both of Danville; and a brother, Raymond Yeaman of Danville.
She was predeceased by a brother, J.D. Yeaman; and a sister, Rebecca Yeaman.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a great niece, 220 Skylark Drive.
