Nannie Alease Carter
DRY FORK - Nannie Alease Blair Carter, 81, 14132 Mount Cross Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she had been a resident for the past three years. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born Sept. 5, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Lucy Murphy Blair and James Lipscomb Blair.
Mrs. Carter lived most of her life in the Hinesville community, where she and Mr. Carter farmed.
She formerly worked for Thalhimers and Belks.
She was a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church.
She was married
to Ralph H. Carter Sr., who survives.
She was predeceased by a son, Ralph Halfred Carter, Jr., who died Dec. 30, 1970.
She is survived by a niece, Vernell Powell, who had helped care for her for the past 12 years; and a sister, Ernestine Mize of Danville; and several other nieces and nephews.
She was also predeceased by a brother, Norman Y. Blair; and two sisters, Pattie Blair and Nellie Coleman.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Jeffery Lee Cannon. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence, 14132 Mount Cross Road.
Joseph Galloway
CHATHAM - The Rev. Joseph L. Galloway, 78, 435 Peach St., died Sunday night, Jan. 25, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 17, 1919, in Mt. Airy, N.C., he was a son of James and Delia Galloway.
He was married
to Rebecca K. Galloway, who survives.
He was a member of Corinth Christian Church, and pastored several churches.
He was a past mayor of the Town of Chatham, past chairman of Board of Pittsylvania County Community Action Inc., treasurer of Pittsylvania County Community Action, Inc., and treasurer of the Pittsylvania County NAACP.
He was also a retired educator for the Pittsylvania County School System.
He was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Armed Forces, and was a member of Judah Masonic Lodge 205.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Gaylon R. Galloway Hopkins of Birmingham, Ala.; two sons, Elbert L. Galloway of Richmond and Julian V. Galloway of Danville; two sisters, Josephine Galloway of Mt. Airy, N.C., and Rebecca G. Olds of Virginia Beach; three brothers, James Galloway of Pittsburg, William Edward Galloway of Cleveland, and Donald Galloway of New York City; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at the Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Gary N. Page. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park with military rites by VFW Post 4165 and DVA Chapter 46 of Altavista and Masonic rites by Judah Masonic Lodge 205.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Howerton Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Aaron 'Big Ace' Hairston
Aaron "Big Ace" Hairston, 62, 355 Wendell Scott Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 3, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Edward and Limma Price Hairston.
He was a retired shift worker for Dibrell Tobacco Co., and was a member of North New Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Alvin R. Hairston of Danville and David Hairston of Atlantic City, N.J.; and five sisters, Marie Hairston of the residence, Floscelia Leftwich of Danville, Shirley A. Wattie of Pleasantville, N.J., and Mary L. Lea and Penny S. Ely, both of Atlantic City, N.J.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at North New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Willard Smith. Burial will be in Crooktown cemetery.
Mr. Hairston may be viewed from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will be at the residence.
Otto Holbrook
Otto Marvin Holbrook, 71, 322 Wrenn Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at his residence after several years of declining health.
Born Aug. 24, 1926, in Insko, Ky., he was the son of Lonnie Holbrook and Flossie Marie Sizemore Holbrook.
On Sept. 13, 1947, he was married
to Mary Lou Blakemore Holbrook, who died Oct. 2, 1997.
He was of the Catholic faith.
He lived his early years in Insko, Ky. From 1952 to 1977, he lived in Montclair, Calif., and had been a resident of Danville since 1978.
He was retired as a self employed building contractor, an excavator and an engineer. He had earned his master's degree in carpentry.
He was a member of Benevolent Protective Order of Elk, Danville Lodge 227.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include a son, Stephen S. Holbrook of Danville; and a sister, Andelene M. Holbrook Ward of Bracey.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. in Highland Burial Park by Father David McGuire with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.
Floyd Hogan
EVINGTON - Floyd Ramsey Hogan, 81, U.S. 1, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at his residence.
Born Sept. 9, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Elais Thomas Hogan and Millie Ann Shelton Hogan.
He was married
to Velma McGhee Hogan, who survives.
He was a member of Gideons and Penuel Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.
He was a retired carpenter with Frazier Construction Company.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Ryland B. Hogan of Madison Heights; three daughters, Gayle Gould of Forest, Judy Dawson of Evington and Cindy Hogan of Wilmington, N.C.; a sister, Sue Bullington of Evington; five grandchildren, Marty Hogan, Jessica Hogan, Janet Harris, Shannon Dawson and Tara Lancaster; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Stephanie Hogan.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Finch & Finch Chapel by the Rev. James McGhee and the Rev. Carl Burger. Burial will be in Altavista Memorial Park.

Bobby Matkins Sr.
FLORENCE, S.C. - Bobby John Matkins Sr., 58, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at McLeod Medical Center after an illness.
A native of Danville, Va., he was the son of Clarence Willard Matkins and Elbert Irene Ledford Matkins.
He was retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam.
He was a graduate of Florence-Darlington Tech and was a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church.
He was associated with Darlington County Sheriff's Department for seven years and was manager of Shoney's Restaurant in Raleigh, N.C.
Survivors include a son, Bobby John Matkins Jr. of Florence; a daughter, Sandra Sturkie of Darlington; two sisters, Agnes Pigg of Tarboro, N.C., and Peggy Schrum of Florence; a stepbrother, Wayne Webb of Washington, D.C.; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Mechanicsville Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 9 tonight at Kistler Funeral Home, Darlington.
Kurt Sterner
CLERMONT, Fla. - Kurt Eric Sterner, 73, 13108 Anderson Hill Road, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998.
Born June 9, 1924, he was a native of New York.
In 1945, he was married
to Ina Haviland Sterner, who died in Orlando in 1980. He was later married
to Jean Sterner, who survives.
He moved to Clermont in 1980 from Orlando.
He was a member of First Christian Church in Leesburg.
After 27 years of service, he was a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He was a P-38 and F-86 fighter pilot. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
He was a designer engineer for Martin Marietta, Electronic Warfare Associates and Educational Computer Corp., all of Orlando.
He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire in electrical engineering. He was owner of Kes Miniatures, and was inventor and patent holder of an electrification system for miniature doll houses.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, William Kurt "Bill" Sterner of Ringgold, Va.; a daughter, Cheryl S. Barrett of Friendship, Maine; his mother, Greta Sterner of Tavares; a stepson, Scott A. McCord of West Palm Beach; two stepdaughters, Pamela J. Pusey of Ft. Belvoir, and Kathi S. Kretzer of West Palm Beach; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in Leesburg by the Rev. Michael McCann. Burial was in Florida National cemetery, Bushnell, with full military honors.

Josephine Estes
Josephine Sneed Estes, 89, departed this life on January 24, 1998. She was a resident of Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg at the time of her death.
Born in Danville on April 10, 1908, the daughter of Oscar Peebles Estes and Mary Sneed Estes, she graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's College in 1930, and taught for many years in Danville at George Washington High School until her retirement in 1970.
She had been a member of Main Street United Methodist Church since 1920, and lived in Grove Park prior to moving to Lynchburg.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Leland Lloyd Estes, John Swanson Estes and Oscar Peebles Estes Jr.
She is survived by three nephews and their families, Leland Lloyd Estes Jr. of Nashville, John Swanson Estes and William Gannaway Estes, both of Richmond; and long-time friend, Rebekah Coppedge of Lynchburg.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 1998, at Main Street United Methodist Church in Danville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church.
Roland Reynolds Jr.
NEWPORT NEWS - Roland Blair Reynolds Jr., 35, of 6 Doe Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at his residence.
Born April 12, 1962, in Newport News, he was a son of Roland Blair Reynolds Sr. and Carol Rowland Reynolds, who survive.
He worked as a salesperson for the Exxon Corp.
In addition to his parents of Carrollton, survivors include a brother, Michael Wayne Reynolds of the residence; and his paternal grandmother, Recie Pickeral Reynolds of Chesapeake.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Robert Royal. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 6:30-8:00 tonight at the funeral home.
