Paul Rowland
GRETNA - Paul Grover Rowland, 83, 405 Henry St., died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Oct. 16, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Henry Rowland and Virginia Pugh Rowland.
He was married
to Katherine Crawley Rowland, who survives.
He was a member of Gretna Christian Church, and was a retired truck driver with Lane Company.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Darrell Rowland of Gretna; a daughter, Maxine R. Catron of Gretna; a brother, Rison Rowland of Gretna; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Gretna Christian Church by the Rev. Cecil O. Rhodes and the Rev. Cliff McCoy. Interment
will be on Gretna Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Ernest Westbrook Jr.
TROUTVILLE - Ernest E. Westbrook Jr., 71, formerly of Charlotte, N.C., died Wednesday morning, Jan. 28, 1998, in a Roanoke Hospital.
Born April 23, 1926, in Danville, he was a son of Ernest E. Westbrook Sr. and Laila Jones Westbrook.
He was married
to Betsy Riddle Westbrook, who survives.
He was a member of Bonsack Baptist Church.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force, and was a graduate in engineering from VPI.
After 38 years of service, he was retired from E.I. DuPont Company in Wilmington, Del.
He was a 33rd degree Mason and a member of Nur Shrine Temple in Wilmington, Del.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a stepdaughter, Tina Peters of Delta, Colo.; a stepson, Anthony Payne of San Leandro, Calif.; three sisters, Ramona Westbrook, Faye Westbrook and Florence Westbrook, all of Danville; two brothers, Bruce Westbrook of Florence, Ky., and Kenneth Westbrook of Puyallup, Wash.; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Gloria Turner.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakey's North Chapel, 6732 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, by the Rev. Dr. Robert W. Moore III. Burial will be in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens, Cloverdale.
The family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
James Browder
A graveside service for James R. Browder, 89, 248 Manor Place, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Fred Martin.
He died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born July 14, 1908, in Danville, he was the son of Andrew David Browder and Lydia Jarrett Browder.
In 1933, he was first married
to Irma Jefferson, who died in 1952. In 1955, he was later married
to Carol Edmunds, who died in 1994.
He attended the Danville schools. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
In 1926, he started working for the Register & Bee newspaper. From 1935 until his retirement in 1972, he was director of advertising for the newspaper.
He was a member of numerous civic clubs before his retirement.
He was also a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Irma Bagby of Annapolis, Md., and Helen Cheyney of Danville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Janie Davis
ALTAVISTA - Janie Nadine Davis, 63, 1914 Elm St.,Rockford, Ill., formerly of Pittsylvania County, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at her residence.
Born Dec. 28, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Robert Davis and Dollie Slayton Davis.
She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Kitty Callands and Dollie Davis, both of Rockford, Ill.; a son, Jimmie Davis of Rockford, Ill.; five brothers, John Henry Davis of Alexandria and Charlie Davis of Gretna and Robert Davis Jr. of Long Island and Jimmy Davis of Delaware and Joe Davis of Hurt; 12 sisters, Myrtle Gilbert of Altavista and Mary Davis and Lucille Davis, both of Alexandria and Betty Stone, Emma Lou Miller, Janita Craft and Irene Davis, all of Java, and Jerlean Davis and Ella Carter, both of Gretna, and Arlean Davis of South Boston and Dolly Davis of Long Island and Emma Jean Davis of Delaware; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Jones and the Rev. Cobble Poindexter. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Myrtle Gilbert, 901 9th St., Altavista.

Sallie Day
Sallie Walton Day, 80, 520 Madison St., died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at Bowman Gray Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Born Jan. 2, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Arthur and Anna Tarpley Walton.
She was a retired shift worker for Dan River Mills.
She was a member of First Baptist Missionary Church.
Survivors include two sons, James M. Day and Jimmy D. Day, both of Danville; two brothers, Robert Walton and Ross Walton, both of Dry Fork; and four sisters, Chestine McClam of Danville, Cella Day of Axton, and Rebecca Vick and Georgia Cade, both of Trenton, N.J.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Missionary Church by the Rev. J.P. Griffith Jr. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
There will be a viewing from 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

Sam Hairston
CASCADE - Sam Henry Hairston, 56, 4220 Cascade Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998.
Born March 29, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Peter Willie Hairston and Indinia Mules Hairston.
Survivors include his wife, Doris M. Hairston; a daughter, Maybelle Hairston of Cascade; a son, Kenneth O'Neal Hairston of Cascade; five sisters, Maybelle Tucker of Martinsville, Margaret Thomas of Danville, Anna Fontaine of Axton, Mary Price of Stokeland, and Ruby Hampton of Cascade; two brothers, Jack Hairston of Danville and Robert Hairston of Cascade; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Star of Bethlehem Way of the Cross Church in Cascade. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Della Heater
A graveside service for Della Hubbard Heater, 88, formerly of 131 Sunset Drive, will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. William Blalock.
She died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 29, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.
Born April 11, 1909, in Pelham, N.C., she was a daughter of William Allen Hubbard and Mattie L. Hubbard.
She was married
to Harry Gordon Heater, who predeceased her.
Most of her life was spent in Danville, where she was employed by Dan River, Inc., in No. 1A Weave before retiring.
She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, C.R. Heater of Urbanna and Jack Heater of Danville; a daughter, Shirley Chandler of Danville; a sister, Laura Helen Walton of Danville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Benny Heater.

Patrick Hogue
Patrick Henry Hogue, 67, 109 Ida St., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
Born Sept. 9, 1930, in Sutherlin, he was a son of Willie Henry Hogue and Fannie Whitlock Hogue.
He was married
to Eva Parker Hogue, who survives.
He was an employee with the City of Danville, working in the recreation department before retiring after 35 years.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Regina Farmer and Cathy Waller, both of Danville; a son, Ray Hogue of Danville; two brothers, Willie Hogue and Herman Hogue; two sisters, Virginia Logan of Sutherlin and Ocelia Hogue of Long Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Vance Street Baptist Church by Herbert Dickerson. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

She died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at her residence.
Born Sept. 21, 1917, in Fries, she was the daughter of George L. Spencer and Bessie Hooker Spencer.
She was first married
to Grover T. Hudgins, who predeceased her. On May 11, 1982, she was married
to Clarence Hudgins, who survives.
She was a salesperson for Thalhimers Department Store, and later, a salesperson for Dan River Cloth Store.
She was a member and past Sunday school teacher for St. Lukes United Methodist Church.
She was a volunteer and past president for the Auxiliary of the Salvation Army.
In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a stepson, Allen Hudgins of Danville.
She was also predeceased by two sons, Freddie Lee Hudgins and Grover Thomas Hudgins Jr.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Ocie Mitchell
Funeral services for Ocie Worley LaBiosa Mitchell, 71, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Clyde George. Interment

She died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health.
Born Nov. 12, 1926, in Gretna, she was the daughter of Sidney P. Worley and Tinnie Cox Worley Shelton.
She was first married
to Armand LaBiosa, who predeceased her. She was later married
to Gilliam Mitchell, who also predeceased her.
She was a member of North Danville Church of Christ.
She lived her earlier years in the Chatham area and her remaining years in Danville.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda L. Eaton of Chatham; an adopted daughter, Lisa W. Perrow of Danville; two sons, A. Wayne LaBiosa of Keeling and Richard A. Mitchell of Danville; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by two daughters, Ann Marie L. Herndon and Rita L. Wilson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of Lisa Perrow, 124 Vinton Place.
Hubert Taylor
CALLANDS - Hubert Taylor, 50, 1800 Mapleton Drive, died Thursday night, Jan. 29, 1998, at his residence.
Born Oct. 30, 1947, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James Taylor and Margaret Geneva Wooding, who survives.
He was married
to Marie B. Taylor, who also survives.
He was a member of Hopel Chapel Baptist Church in Dry Fork.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include a son, Bradley Taylor of Norfolk; a daughter, Kimberly Taylor of Norfolk; two brothers, Aubrey Taylor of Chatham and James Taylor of Danville; and two sisters, Felicia Stokes of Danville and Linda Echols of Dry Fork.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Delaware Clark. Burial will be in Hopel Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.
