Robert Elswick
DALE CITY - Robert Mitchell Elswick, 39, of 14507 Duran Drive, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, in Fairfax Hospital.
Born July 21, 1958, in Charlottesville, he was a son of Thomas Martin and Joan Davis Martin.
He was a dry wall finisher with Beltway Dry Wall.
Survivors include his wife, Beth Robertson Elswick of the residence; a son, Danny Elswick of the residence; two daughters, Candace Elswick and Melinda Elswick of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; a stepson, Kevin Keesee of Gretna; two brothers, Kevin Martin and Larry Martin, both of Charlottesville; a sister, Vicky Martin of northern Virginia.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Greenfield Baptist Church by the Rev. R.G. Rowland with burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Janie Robertson at 5788 East Gretna Road in Gretna.
Annie Giles
Annie Taylor Giles, 97, formerly of 1410 North Main St., died Friday night, Jan. 30, 1998, in Riverside Health Care Center after a two-year decline in health. She had been in the nursing home for a year.
Born Oct. 22, 1900, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of William Thomas Taylor and Isabelle Virginia Turner Taylor.
She lived her early life on Westover Drive and later moved to North Danville, where she lived until her health failed.
She was married
to Eddie T. Giles, who died July 21, 1946. She worked as an inspector at Dan River Inc. for 37 years. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church on North Main Street.
Survivors include a daughter, Naomi Giles Lowman of Richmond; a son, Edwin T. Giles of Locust Grove; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe Beck, the Rev. Kenneth Terry and Dr. James Gardner with burial in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home.
Louise Lane
Louise Widener Lane, 75, formerly of 222 Courtland St., Apt. 309, died Saturday morning, Jan. 31, 1998, in Stratford Health Care Center.
Born May 17, 1922, in Hiwaitha County, W.V., she was the daughter of Thomas Widener and Flora Reedy Widener.
Most of her life was spent in Danville, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, James A. Lane of Sharpsburg, Ga., and Thomas L. Lane of South Boston; one brother, Wilton Widener of Mt. City, Tenn.; four grandchildren also survive.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Wayne Hall. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Lura Wimmer
Lura Haskins Wimmer, 101, of Roman Eagle Memorial Nursing Home, died Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 13, 1896, in Gretna, she was the daughter of Flounory Reves Haskins and Nannie Kate Shelton.
She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Her husband, Carl C. Wimmer, died in March of 1964.
She was predeceased by four brothers, S. Leon Wimmer, Roy R. Wimmer, Ennis A. Wimmer and Grier C. Wimmer.
Survivors include three daughters, Elma W. Nunnery of Roanoke, Clara B. Bowman of Danville and Edith W. Coleman, also of Danville; four sons, Frank W. Wimmer of Danville, Carl C. Wimmer Jr. and the Rev. Mark F. Wimmer, both of Dry Fork, and Jerome L. Wimmer Sr. of Whitmell; 20 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. She was the last of her generation.
The family will be at 114 Bailey Place.
Services will be conducted from the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel on Monday at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 p.m. until 8:30.

E. Ballou Bagby
Edward Ballou Bagby, 89, 510 Linden Place, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at his residence.
Born Jan. 16, 1909, in Danville, he was a son of Jechonias Lovelace Bagby and Rosa Wilson Ballou Bagby.
He was educated in Danville public schools, graduated in 1925 from Danville Military Institute and was a graduate of Washington and Lee University in 1929.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and retired as lieutenant commander.
He joined First National Bank in 1930. In 1959, he became vice president and cashier, senior vice president and board member in 1963 and president in 1971. In 1973, he became chief executive officer and chairman of the board. He retired from First National Bank in 1975.
He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where he also served on the board of trustees and stewards.
He was a member and past president of Danville Red Cross Chapter, past president of Retail Merchants Association, past director of Goodwill Industries and former member of Danville School Board and the City Planning Commission.
He was also a former member of Kiwanis Club, German Club and the Young Men's Club. He was also a member of Danville Golf Club, Triad Orchid Society and Men's Horticulture Society.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa Elizabeth Jordan Bagby of the residence; Richard Jordan Bagby of Danville; and two granddaughters.
He was predeceased by his brother, James Lovelace Bagby.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Cobb. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, and the family will be at the residence.
Judy Brooks
Judy Scearce Brooks, 56, 1493 Mt. Cross Road, died Monday morning, Feb. 2, 1998, at her residence. She had been in declining health for the past 18 months.
Born Oct. 15, 1941, in Danville, she was a daughter of Raymond Irvin Scearce and Zelda Ferguson Scearce.
She was married
to Ralph Morgan Brooks, who survives.
A life long resident of Danville, she was employed by the Danville Police Dept. for six years as crossing guard at Schoolfield School. She was also a beautician for 15 years.
She was a member of Danville Bible Chapel.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Leigh Brooks and Shannon Renee Ragsdale, both of Danville; three brothers, Raymond W. Scearce of Clio, Mich., Arnold B. Scearce of Pelham, N.C., and Mark G. Scearce of Eden, N.C.; four sisters, Dale Harrell and Zelda Soyars, both of Pelham, N.C., Cheri Crouse of Danville and Patti Reynolds of Callands; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Don Harrell, Captain Paul Heffinger and Jim Pendry. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Otha Burnette
Otha West Burnette, 88, formerly of 1328 Aspen St., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after five years of declining health and eight months in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Jan. 2, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Joseph Burnette and Ethel Barbour Burnette.
On Dec. 24, 1932, he was married
to Lena Taylor Burnette, who died Nov. 10, 1996.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he was employed by the City of Danville Fire Department until his retirement from the Bridge Street Station after 34 years of service as a fire fighter.
He was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Bruce Burnette of Halifax; a daughter, Linda B. Lee of Galax; two brothers, Dallas Burnette and Wesley Burnette, both of Danville; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Design United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLain. Burial will be in Leemont cemetery.

Doris Gibson
Doris Arnell Wren Wilburn Saunders Gibson, 86, 26 Oakland Ave., died Monday morning, Feb. 2, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health. She had been in serious condition for a week.
Born Dec. 29, 1911, in Mercer County, W. Va., she was the daughter of Lewis Wren and Rosa Carter Wren.
She was first married
to Jimmy Wilburn, who predeceased her. She was later married
to Ivor L. Saunders, who also predeceased her. At the time of her death, she was married
to Claude A. Gibson, who survives.
For the past 50 years, she had been a resident of Danville, where she was a homemaker and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church on Halifax Road.
In addition to her husband of Danville, survivors include six sons, Lacey Wilburn of Salem, William Dan Saunders and Roger L. Saunders, both of Danville, Earnest Saunders of Callands, Ivor Steven Saunders of Fitzgerald, Ga., and James Wilburn of South Boston; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert S. Davis and the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her son, William Dan Saunders, 3296 Orphanage Road.
Ruth Jones
Ruth Gordon Jones, formerly of 145 Howeland Circle, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 2, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Oct. 25, 1909, in Guilford County, N.C., she was the daughter of Milton and Sallie Gordon.
She was married
to William F. Jones, who died March 10, 1973.
In 1938, she moved to Danville, when her husband opened Holsum Bakery.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star.
Survivors include two sons, Robert J. Jones and William F. Jones Jr., both of Danville; a daughter, Carolyn Morrison of Hartsville, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Mt. View cemetery by the Rev. Jack F. Heinsohn Jr.

Glenn Kirks
Glenn Allen Kirks, 52, 345 Harper Road, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 26, 1945, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Luther Kirks and Ethel Marshall Kirks, who survives.
He was married
to Faye Wilkes Kirks, who also survives.
A life long resident of Pittsylvania County, he worked for the City of Danville for 19 years as communications technician.
He was a lifetime member of Danville Life Saving Crew.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Callands, survivors include a son, Christopher Glenn Kirks of the residence; a sister, Phyllis K. Crabb of Manasas; and a brother, Donald Ray Kirks of Callands.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Clay Knick. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Lola Luther
FIELDALE - Lola Jane Myers Luther, 84, 1708 The Great Road, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 5, 1913, in Carroll County, she was a daughter of Benjamin Harrison Myers and Flora Belle Stilwell Myers.
She was married
to James Olen Luther, who died in 1985.
She was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Survivors include four daughters, Janice Wilson, Ineda Hart and Nancy Motley, all of Fieldale, and Lois Edwards of Ridgeway; five sons, James Clinton Luther, Benjamin Odell Luther, Homer Luther, Kennard Wayne Luther and Dennis Luther, all of Fieldale; two sisters, Laura Branscome and Pearl Myer, both of Hillsville; two brothers, Fred Myers of Hillsville and Rudolph Stilwell of Columbus, Ohio; 26 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Hillsville.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. today at the church.
