Prather Martin
Prather E. Martin, 87, died Monday morning, Feb. 2, 1998, at Beaufont Health Care Center in Richmond.
Born May 8, 1910, in Stuart, he was a son of James Samuel Martin and Ora Martin.
He was married
to Mabel Harnsberger Martin, who died Dec. 1, 1982.
He was raised in Martinsville. A decorated World War II veteran, he graduated from Armed Forces School in Ft. Knox and served under General George Patton as a chief tank mechanic completing tours in Africa, France, Germany, Belgium and in the Pacific.
After the war, he moved to Danville, where he managed the Danville Gulf Oil Co. Later he owned and operated Prather's Esso on West Main Street and retired from Abercrombie Oil Corp.
He was a past worshipful master of Morotock Masonic Lodge 210, a member of ACCA Temple Shrine Club and a charter member of Rivermont Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Jo Ann Martin Brown and Betty Martin Evans, both of Richmond; two sisters, Lubertie Martin Shelton and Maxine Martin Horsley, both of Richmond; a brother, Larry Martin of Martinsville; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mausoleum Chapel in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jack Waddell.
Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with Masonic rites by Morotock Lodge 210.
The family will receive friends following the service.

Hazel Musgrove
HAMPTON - Hazel Morgan Musgrove, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, after a short illness.
Born in Danville, she was the daughter of Joseph G. and Winnie Dee Morgan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, William R. Musgrove.
Survivors include three sons, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton.
Willie Peters
Willie Peters, 60, 418 Holbrook St., died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 26, 1938, in Danville, he was a son of Elizabeth Peters.
He was a shift worker for Dibrell's tobacco factory.
Survivors include two brothers, Namond Peters of the residence and Claude Peters of Newark, N.J.; and four sisters, Peggy Totten and Nancy Peters, both of the residence, Carolyn Bethel of Danville and Betty Knight of Buffalo, N.Y.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Jasper Watkins. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 4-8 today at the funeral home.
The family is at the residence.
Bess Tudor
MARTINSVILLE - Bess Prillaman Tudor, 90, 809 Parkview Ave., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Martinsville-Henry County Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 16, 1907, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Nathaniel Bacon Prillaman and Mary Ingram Prillaman.
She was married
to Elmer Sanford Tudor, who predeceased her.
She graduated from Bassett High School in 1924 and in 1927, she graduated from National Business College Roanoke.
She worked for Bassett Furniture Industries for 45 years before retiring in 1974 as supervisor for the secretarial pool.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville, where she was a member of W.M.U. and the Placide Mitchell Sunday School Class.
She was also a charter member of Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church.
She served as president group leader for Henry County Baptist Association.
She was a member and regent of Patrick Henry Chapter DAR, chaplain of Mildred Lee Chapter U.D.C., a member of Blue Ridge Garden Club and Beaver Creek Garden Club, and a member of Thursday Book Club.
She was also a member of Piedmont Arts Docents and Books & Arts Club and a volunteer of American Red Cross.
Survivors include a daughter, Marianne Tudor of the residence.
She was also predeceased by a sister, Lessie Prillaman; and a brother, John Grayson Prillaman Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Martinsville by Dr. Thomas McCann and the Rev. Nancy S. McDaniel. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the church.

Bessie Bohannon
Bessie Sue Dodd Bohannon, 73, 1584 Halifax Road, died February 4, 1998, at her residence after 23 months of declining health.
Born Sept. 21, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John David Dodd and Gracie Evans Dodd.
On Nov. 17, 1945, she was married
to Mark White Bohannon, who survives.
A life long resident of Pittsylvania County and Danville, she was retired from the Research Division of Dan River, Inc., after 38 years of service.
She was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church and a member of Sunshine Sunday School Class.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, Ronnie W. Bohannon and Steven M. Bohannon, both of Danville, and Donnie R. Bohannon of Sutherlin; two daughters-in-law, Robin Bohannon of Sutherlin and Penny Bohannon of Danville; a brother, Carroll Dodd of Sarasota, Fla.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Ryland Dodd; and a grandson, Roger Wayne Bohannon.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Rick Lancaster and the Rev. John Young. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

James Durham
CHATHAM - James A. Durham, 69, 380 Gilbert Road, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 4, 1998, at his residence after a lenghty illness from a neurodegenerative disease, progressive supranuclear palsy.
Born Nov. 24, 1928, in Henry County, he was a son of David Durham and Nannie Earles Durham.
He was married
to Hazel Bates Durham, who survives.
During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army.
A resident of the Danville area for most of his life, he was owner and operator of Northside Tire & Battery.
He was a charter member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, James Frankie Durham of Danville; a daughter, Joyce Estabrook of Danville; three brothers, Melvin Durham of Martinsville, Billy Durham of Danville and Joseph Durham of Pelham, N.C.; five sisters, Mary Gravley, Betty Bates, Barbara Snead and Faye Moore, all of Danville, and Frances Reynolds of Callands; and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Shirley Marlowe.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Full Gospel Fellowship Church by the Rev. Roger Ewing and the Rev. William Bates. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.

George Edwards
George William Edwards, 88, 11220 Mount Cross Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a year of declining health and 12 days in the hospital.
Born June 29, 1909, in Sandy Level, he was a son Olander Crispen Edwards and Dollie Lou Edwards.
On Oct. 8, 1934, he was married
to Lula Bowles Edwards, who survives.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he had been a resident of Mount Cross Road since 1955.
After 22 years of service, he retired from Dan River Mills, Inc., in 1974, where he worked in the weave room, Riverside Division.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, George William Edwards Jr. of South Boston and Alonza Lee Edwards of Dry Fork; four daughters, Fannie E. Herndon of Ringgold and Anne E. Bartley, Katherine E. Hamlett and Mary E. Johnson, all of Danville; an adopted granddaughter, Annette Jeter of Danville; two brothers, Gid Harris Edwards and Fletcher Clement Edwards, both of Danville; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Clyde F. George. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Ruth Hyler
KEELING - Funeral services for Ruth Marie McBride Hyler, 60, 404 Adams Trail, will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. James Albert and the Rev. Donald Mahan. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
She died Tuesday morning, Feb. 3, 1998, at Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., after a six month decline in health and four weeks in the hospital.
Born Dec. 28, 1937, in Patrick County, she was a daughter of Roy W. McBride and Maggie Lawson McBride.
She was married
for 44 years to Raymond B. Hyler, who survives.
She had lived in Danville for a number of years and in the Keeling community for 25 years.
She worked as a weaver in Dan River Mills for a number of years in her early life.
She was a member of Community Baptist Church on Iris Lane.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Jimmy R. Hyler of Dry Fork and Gary D. Hyler of Danville; two sisters, Mary M. Reindl of Virginia Beach and Ruby Louise Myers of Ringgold; a brother, Junior Franklin McBride of Bachelors Hall; and two grandchildren.

Dorothy Smith
RINGGOLD - Dorothy Bethea Braddy Smith, 58, 2419 Tom Fork Road, died Monday, Jan. 2, 1998, at Elder Care Nursing Home in Rocky Mount.
Born Oct. 4, 1939, in Mariam County, she was a daughter of Erion Bethea and Julia Smith Bethea.
She was employed by Dibrell Brothers, Inc., for many years.
Survivors include a son, Tony Smith of Danville; three brothers, Albert Bethea of Washington, D.C., and John West Bethea and Charles Bethea, both of Mullins, S.C.; a sister, Mable Lee of Washington, D.C.; and a grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at Troy Funeral Home, 247 N.E. Front St., Mullins, S.C. Burial will be in Carmichael cemetery.
There will be a viewing today at Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home. The family will meet at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Clarence Stowe
Funeral services for Clarence Gold Stowe, 83, 4688 Mount Cross Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Don Davidson and the Rev. Bennett Shelton. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

He was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Jimmie N. Stowe of Hazlehurst, Miss., and Garry W. Stowe and David W. Stowe, both of Danville; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his son, David W. Stowe, 920 Silver Creek Road, off of Mount Cross Road.
