Howard Hall
CASCADE - John Howard Hall, 91, 300 May Hardy Road, died Friday afternoon, Feb. 6, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 31, 1909, in Henry County, he was the son of John Hall and Cassie Ratliff Hall.
He was married
to Delia Stone Hall, who survives.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Apostolic Tabernacle Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include seven daughters, Maybell Bailey of Florida and Thelma Hall, Josephine Meeks and Inez Hardy, all of Eden, N.C., and Lois Delancey of Cascade and Dorothy Hardy and Kay Beck, both of Danville; five sons, Richard Hall of Eden, N.C., and Robert Hall and Willie Hall, both of Danville, and Burton Hall and Curtis Hall, both of Cascade; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Hubert Harris. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Edward H. Motley
Funeral services for Edward H. Motley, 83, 70 Parrish Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph Cypress. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
He died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in Stratford Medical Center.
Born June 15, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George and Celestia Lindsey Motley.
He was a cemetery technician for the City of Danville.
He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Edward Motley Jr. of Jersey City, N.J., and George Motley of Sumnter, S.C.; four daughters, Rosa Wilson of Danville, Anna Miller of New York, Sara Ferguson of the residence and Willie Mae Logan of Louisville, Ky.; three brothers, Ralph Motley, Stonewall Motley and John Motley, all of Blairs; two sisters, Odessa Valentine of Danville and Louise Steinback of New York; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. today at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Dorthy Pinnix
GLENN BURNIE, Md. - Dorthy Davis Pinnix, 69, 1005 Guy Drive, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 5, 1998, at Marnier Health Center in Glenn Burnie.
Born May 20, 1928, in Halifax County, Va., she was a daughter of Luther Davis and Maude Robertson Davis.
In 1944, she was first married
to Herman Hardy, who predeceased her. She later married
Charles Pinnix in 1952, who also predeceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Madej of Denton and Patricia Stancil of Owings; two sons, Steven Hardy of Seattle and Duane Pinnix of West Friends; four sisters, Pearl Yeaman, Essie Davis, Erma Shotwell and Vergie McGuire, all of Danville, Va.; a brother, Mathew Davis of Riverdale, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was also predeceased by a sister, Lessie Davis; and two brothers, Floyd Davis and Clark Davis.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Singleton Funeral Home Chapel in Glenn Burnie.
The family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today and Sunday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Irvin Carter
Irvin Walton Carter, 91, of 4100 Old Richmond Road, died Feb. 7, 1998, in Riverside Health Care Center. She had been in declining health and in the center for the past 18 months.
Born Jan. 25, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James Lester Walton and Georgia Mae Rice Walton.
She spent her entire life in the Kentuck community where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and the Philathea Sunday school class and a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Robertson Bennett Chapter #70 for 50 years.
On Dec. 3, 1927, she was married
to Hugh W. Carter, who died Feb. 6, 1987.
Survivors include two sons, James H. Carter and Cecil L. Carter, both of Danville; one brother, J. Howard Walton of Danville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Mary W. Fitzgerald.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main chapel by the Rev. David Henry. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Carlton Franklin
Carlton Franklin, 86, formerly of 700 Cardwell Lane in Ringgold, died at noon Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. He had been in declining health for eight years and had been in the nursing home for five years.
Born Oct. 7, 1911, in Ringgold, he was a son of John Henry Franklin and Annie Hudson Franklin.
He had lived his entire life in Ringgold. He was a member of Milton Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder.
A retired dairy farmer, he also worked for Emperial Tobacco Co. as a truck driver for 10 years.
In 1935, he was married
to Etta Milam Franklin, who died Nov. 28, 1977.
Survivors include one brother, J. Earl Franklin of Danville; and a sister, Elsie Maxie Collie of Danville.
He is predeceased by one daughter, Nettie Jean Franklin, who died July 15, 1955; one sister, Hortense Shumate Bliss; and two brothers, Clyde H. Franklin and Bennie V. Franklin.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday by the Rev. David Henry in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a brother, J. Earl Franklin, 6904 Old Richmond Road, in Danville.
Ruben Mayhew
Ruben Bennett Mayhew, 72, of 514 S. Woodberry Ave., died Feb. 7, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for three months.
Born July 2, 1925, in Gretna, he was a son of Charlie Wooding Mayhew and Elizabeth Rowland Mayhew.
He had lived most of his life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County area where he had worked for Dan River Inc. in the #2 spin in the maintenance department. He retired from Dan River after 42 years of service.
Mayhew was a member of Third Ave. Congregational Christian Church, Chapel Bible class and The Disabled American Veterans Archie Gammon Chapter.
During World War II, he was in the U.S. Army and served in the infantry in the European theatre.
On May 14, 1960, he was married
to Frances Russell Mayhew, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Russell Ruben Mayhew of Conyers, Ga., Charles Edward Mayhew of Raleigh, N.C., Paul Bennett Mayhew of Dry Fork and Benjamin Lewis Mayhew of Danville; two daughters, Vickie M. Burnett of Ringgold and Teresa M. Harris of Reidsville, N.C.; one brother, Percy Ramsey Mayhew of Danville; six sisters, Mary Lemuel Easome, Julia McGhee, Clara Davis and Estelle Bobbitt, all of Danville, Elsie Adams of Keeling, Gertie Neal of Chesapeake; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas Mayhew and James Mayhew.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Third Ave. Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Freddie Vicks. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. The American Legion Post 325 will conduct military rites.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover chapel and other times will be at the residence.
Wilsie Waller
CHATHAM - Wilsie Layne Waller, 86, of Tight Squeeze Road, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at Gretna Healthcare Center.
Born July 15, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Joel P. Layne and Betty Keatts Layne.
A member of Buffalo Baptist Church, she was married
to Melvin Richard Waller, who predeceased her.
Survivors include two sons, Richard W. Waller of Long Island and Floyd J. Waller of Gretna; two daughters, Alvarene W. McFadden of Appomattox and Ruby H. Jordan of Chatham; one brother, Jessie Layne of Altavista; two sisters, Elsie Barbour of Lynchburg and Margie Johnson of Burlington, N.C.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas L. Waller and a daughter, Betty B. Waller.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Buffalo Baptist Church cemetery by the Pastor Dean Lamphere.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Henderson Funeral Home in Brookneal and other times will be at the residence of her son, Richard Waller, at Wyatts Road, Long Island.
Pearl Webster
NEWPORT NEWS - Pearl H. Webster, 96, a native of Gretna and a Peninsula resident for more than twenty five years, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998. A former school teacher, Mrs. Webster taught in the Pittsylvania County School System from 1923 until 1933. She was a member of Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church.
The daughter of the late Elisha W. and Blanche Shelton Haden, Mrs. Webster was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, John S. Webster.
Survivors include two nieces, Charlene Pimentel of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Miriam Cattlet and her husband Wayne of Roanoke; and sister-in-law, Nettie Haden of Newport News.
A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 1998, in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, by Rev. Larry Adams.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, was in charge of arrangements.
Edward Dalton
GRETNA - Lewis Edward Dalton, 66, 221 Owens Mill Road, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born March 24, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Alva Dalton and Annie Hogan Dalton.
He was married
to Shirley Brumfield Dalton.
He was a member of Summersett Baptist Church and a retired employee of Klopman.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, Michael A. Dalton of Gretna; and five sisters, Myrtle Dove, Vennie Worley, Iola Gibson, Laura Shelton and Alyne Barley, all of Gretna.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Gatewood Dalton and Berkley Dalton.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Summersett Baptist Church by the Rev. Bert Johnson. Interment
will follow in Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Amanda Hanvey
Amanda Ragle Hanvey, 107, formerly of 1435 Claiborne Street, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998 at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born October 8, 1890, in Cherokee County, N.C., she was the daughter of A.L. Ragle and Mary Jane Evans Ragle.
She was married
to Edward Lee Hanvey, who died in 1942.
She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.
She spent most of her live in Danville. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary H. Gatewood of Hampton; 21 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by five sons, Norman Hanvey, Joe Hanvey, Edward Hanvey, Carl Hanvey and Richard Hanvey; two brothers, Andy Ragle and John Ragle; and two sisters, Nola Ragle and Vina Carr.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Tom Evans. The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Irene Hays
Irene Ainsworth Hays, 73, 175 Westmore Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Moorehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C. She had been in declining health for two years and in the hospital for nine days.
Born July 11, 1924, in Carpenter, Miss., she was the daughter of Monroe Calvin Ainsworth and Olabelle Anglyn Ainsworth.
In June, 1950, she married
William Baxter Hays, who died May 25, 1995.
She lived in Greenville, Miss., before moving to Danville in 1969.
She was a member of Shady Oak Baptist Church.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia H. Berger, of Eden, N.C.; three sons, Charles A. Peeples of Greenville, William C. Hays of Keeling, and Larry T. Hays of Danville; a sister, Agnes A. Lee of Queens, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Avery Marshall. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
