Garland Edward Carter

Garland Edward Carter, of 1111 Main Street, Stratford House, died Wednesday afternoon, February 11, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born Oct. 6, 1906, in the Chestnut Level community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Halcotte Townes Carter and Nannie Richardson Carter.

Mr. Carter was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy. In 1935, he was employed by J.M. Edmunds Company (now Virginia Tobacco Company). At his retirement in 1971, he was president and director of Virginia Tobacco Company.

Mr. Carter was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where he was a member of Class 20.

He was a past master of Carter Masonic Lodge 323 and former board member of First Virginia Bank South.

He was married to the former Catherine Bennett on May 29, 1928, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy Carter White of Montgomery, Ala.; two granddaughters, Cathy White Grogan of Danville and Julie W. Hirschberg of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a brother, Dr. Aubrey Carter of Everett, Wash.; three great-grandchildren, Kelly N. Grogan and Tommy Grogan, both of Danville, and Eric A. Hirschberg of Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jay Ashby. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery with Masonic rites by Carter Masonic Lodge 323.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be sent to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Aldophus Davis

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Aldophus Davis, 53, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at D.C. General Hospital.

A native of Pittsylvania County, Va., he had spent most of his life in Washington, D.C.

He attended the public schools in Virginia.

Survivors include a son, Michael Davis of Rocky Mount, Va.; three brothers, Ocie Davis of Washington, D.C., Leroy Davis of Martinsville, Va., and Acie Davis of Danville, Va.; and five sisters, Maria Lewis of Martinsville, Ruth Harris of Axton, Va., Janie Taylor of Danbury, Conn., and Dorothy Campbell and Geraldine Poole, both of Danville, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Tarpleys Chapel Baptist Church in Dry Fork, Va. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of the Rev. and Mrs. William M. Wilson, 27 Pasadena Knoll, Martinsville, Va.

Galloway's Funeral Home, Eden, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Woodrow Dix

Woodrow W. Dix, 84, 420 Southampton Ave., died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 12, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for a number of years.

Born May 18, 1913, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of William Dix and Maggie Purnell Dix.

He was married to the former Eula Willis, who survives.

A resident of Danville for most of his life, he worked at Dan River Inc., before retiring.

He was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Billy L. Dix of Rocky Mount, N.C.; Dexter D. Dix of Wilmington, Del.; Roger R. Dix of Dallas and Douglas W. Dix of Midlothian; two daughters, Barbara D. Oakes of South Boston and Patsy D. Robertson of Sumnter, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Dana Hunt. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Westelle Farley

Funeral services for Westelle Ritchie Farley, 74, 150 Westmoreland Court, will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jay Ashby. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

She died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 11, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born March 23, 1923, in Danville, she was the daughter of Dudley W. Ritchie and Sadie Shorter Ritchie.

On June 14, 1947, she was married to Andrew A. Farley Jr., who survives.

She was educated in the Danville Public School System and attended Averett College.

She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Farley Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; three sons, Andrew A. Farley III of Lincolnton, N.C., and W. Lee Farley and Thomas F. Farley, both of Danville; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Dudley W. Ritchie Jr.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 150 Westmoreland Court.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Samuel Hershman

GRETNA - Samuel Wilson Hershman, 85, 1944 Crown Road, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 23, 1913, in Mecklenburg County, he was a son of Samuel Moore Hershman and Annie Bell Callahan Hershman.

He was a retired foreman for R.W. Love Construction Inc., and a retired truck driver for James Gibson.

Mr. Hershman was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Delma Rowland Hershman of the residence; three sons, Ray Wilson Hershman, Kenneth Lee Hershman and Leonard John Hershman, all of Gretna; two brothers, Arthur Hershman of Boydton and J.B. Hershman of Keysville; a sister, Eva Campbell of Indiana, Pa.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Greenfield Baptist Church by the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, from 7-8 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be sent to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, Va. 24557 or to the Greenfield Baptist Church cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 875, Gretna, Va. 24557.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Viola Loftis

Viola Hundley Loftis, 79, 1602 Westover Drive, died Wednesday night, Feb. 11, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after 10 years of declining health and a day in the hospital.

Born May 24, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Chesley M. Hundley and Hallie Cousins Hundley.

She was married to David K. Loftis, who died Nov. 22, 1990.

A resident of the Sandy River community and Westover Drive for most of her life, she worked for a number of years in 4A weave room at Dan River Inc. and retired at age 62.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald Glenn Inman and Morris L. Inman, both of Danville, and Kenneth R. Inman of Axton; a daughter, Janice Dillard of Danville; three stepsons, Jeff Loftis and Tommy Loftis, both of Pelham, N.C., and Danny Loftis of St. Louis; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jimmy Hussey.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence, 1602 Westover Drive, Moorefield Trailer Court, Lot F.

Hattie Loney

Funeral services for Hattie Watkins Loney, 65, 103 Barrett St., will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Jones Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Hayes McCornell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

She died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at her residence.

Born Aug. 12, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Woodson and Helen Noble Watkins.

She was married to Julious Loney Sr., who survives.

She worked for Southern Process Tobacco Co.

She was a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church, senior choir and missionary circle. She was also a member of Queen Victoria Tents Lodge.

In addition to her husband of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Cheryl L. Coleman of Danville; two sons, Julious Loney Jr. and Thomas Loney, both of Danville; and five grandchildren.

There will be a viewing this afternoon at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence, 103 Barrett St.

Hazel Owen

CHATHAM - Hazel Mattox Owen, 86, 472 Gandy Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at the residence of her daughter, Patsy Hubbard, 1505 Guess St., Greensboro, N.C.

Born July 20, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Hubert Mattox and Mary Smith Mattox.

She was married to Herman Odell Owen, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Payneton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Marie O. Bushley of Chatham and Patsy O. Hubbard of Greensboro; five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a grandson, Charles O. Strunk.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, in Hillcrest Burial Park by the Rev. James Siddons.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times at the residence, 472 Gandy Road in the Whittles community.

Thelma Prillaman

CHATHAM - Thelma Wardell Prillaman, 85, 604 S. Main St., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 5, 1912, in Greenville, S.C., she was a daughter of Robert Wardell and Ella Bobo Wardell.

She was first married to Claude Cook Duncan, who predeceased her. She was later married to Robert E. Prillaman, who also predeceased her.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty D. Meadows and Nancy D. Lee, both of Chatham, and Lynn Hipp of Blairs; a stepson, Robert E. Prillaman Jr.; a sister, Pauline W. Kelly of Newberry, S.C.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn and the Rev. Donald Bowden. Interment icon will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Verna Spencer

Verna Lewis Spencer, 90, 214 Kenmore Drive, died Wednesday night, Feb. 11, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 3, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Luther Scott Lewis and Virginia Ann Lewis.

She was first married to Louis Gravely Martin, who died in 1940. She was later married to Harry Edward Spencer, who died in 1986.

She had been a resident of Danville since 1983, and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a brother, Linwood Lewis of Danville; and a sister, Elizabeth L. Everett of Danville.

A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Bruce Wilson.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ottie Walker

Ottie Greene Walker, 84, 157 Sherwood Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 18, 1913, in Starr, N.C., she was a daughter of Hiram Greene and Ursula Crisco Greene.

She was first married to Marcus J. Edmonds, who predeceased her. She was later married to Robert Jimmy Walker on May 14, 1949.

A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was formerly employed by Sears and later, in the shoe department at Thalhimer's.

She was a charter member of Rivermont Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Glenda E. Sanders of Sutherlin; a sister, Flossie Ida Poole of High Point, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Rivermont Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Waddell. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
