James Yancey
James Albert Yancey, 75, 111 Spruce St., died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at his residence.
Born June 30, 1922, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Albert Yancey and Bessie Withers Yancey.
He was married
to Juanita Bigelow Yancey, who survives.
He was employed with Dan River Inc. for more than 46 years and served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include two sons, James Albert Yancey Jr. of Atlanta and Michael Lewis Yancey of Danville; two daughters, Nancy C. Yancey and Pamela Denita Brown, both of Danville; two sisters, Addie B. Hall of Hampton and Elizabeth Brown of Washington, D.C.; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Emma H. Burnett
Emma H. Burnett, 90, 122 Saunders Drive, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at her residence.
Born March 4, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Thomas Hall and Emma Riddle Hall.
On Oct. 30, 1935, she was married
to Carlton Nathaniel Burnett, who died Oct. 27, 1969.
She lived most of her life in Danville and the Ringgold community.
Survivors include two sons, Donald G. Burnett and Herman H. Burnett, both of Danville; a sister, Irene Major of Danville; and a brother, Nolan Hall of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Kyle Flora.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her son, Donald Burnett, 912 Vicar Road, Danville.
Garland Edward Carter, of 1111 Main St., Stratford House, died Wednesday afternoon, February 11, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born Oct. 6, 1906, in the Chestnut Level community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Halcotte Townes Carter and Nannie Richardson Carter.
Mr. Carter was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy. In 1935, he was employed by J.M. Edmunds Company (now Virginia Tobacco Company). At his retirement in 1971, he was president and director of Virginia Tobacco Company.
Mr. Carter was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where he was a member of Class 20.
He was a past master of Carter Masonic Lodge 323 and former board member of First Virginia Bank South.
He was married
to the former Catherine Bennett on May 29, 1928, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy Carter White of Montgomery, Ala.; two granddaughters, Cathy White Grogan of Danville and Julie W. Hirschberg of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a brother, Dr. Aubrey Carter of Everett, Wash.; three great-grandchildren, Kelly N. Grogan and Tommy Grogan, both of Danville, and Eric A. Hirschberg of Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jay Ashby. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery with Masonic rites by Carter Masonic Lodge 323.
Memorial donations may be sent to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Willie Carter
DRY FORK - Willie Green Carter, 71, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 1, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Lester Carter and Sally Womack Carter.
A lifelong resident of the Danville area, he was employed at Fuquay Pontiac for 40 years.
He was a member of White Oak Baptist Church in Dry Fork.
Survivors include two sisters, Audrey C. Culberth and Parthenia C. Lea, both of Washington, D.C.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. H.L. Dickerson. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park, Danville.

Rudene Munday
MARTINSVILLE - Rudene Hix Wheeler Munday, 728 Beechnut Lane, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at the home of her daughter in Danville.
She was born in Bogart, Ga., to James O. Hix and Mae Barnette Hix.
She moved to Martinsville in 1953 with her late husband, Dr. J. Fred Wheeler Sr., to start his practice in veterinarian medicine. She worked with him for 25 years until his death in 1977.
She was a member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband, E.L. Munday Jr. of King's Grant in Martinsville; a son, James F. Wheeler Jr. of the home; two daughters, Freda Wheeler Moore of Danville and Jerri Wheeler Drewery of Wake Forest, N.C.; a stepson, Trey Munday of Roanoke; a stepdaughter, Marylynn Robinson of Hedgesville, W. Va.; five grandchildren, Rachel, Lindsey and Allison Moore, all of Danville, and Jay and Sarah Wheeler of the home; a step-grandson, Christopher Robinson of Hedgesville, W. Va.; a brother, James Hix of Hull, Ga.; a sister, Dorothy H. Brown of Dalonega, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville.

Clarence Neal
RINGGOLD - Clarence Owen Neal, 84, formerly of 2528 Airview Drive, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at Stratford Health Care Center after eight years of declining health and two years at Stratford.
Born Jan. 25, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Walter F. Neal and Ida Mae Compton Neal.
On April 11, 1936, he was married
to Bertha Inez Neal, who died Dec. 29, 1989.
A resident of Danville and Pittsylvania County for most of his life, he had worked for Parrish-Johnson Electric Co., prior to his retirement after 34 years of service.
He was a member of the Tabernacle and the Senior Saints of the Tabernacle.
Survivors include a son, Jimmie Edison Neal of Trinity, N.C.; a daughter, Ida Jane Neal Bowyer of Bristol; two brothers, Junior Edward Neal of Danville and Stuart Woodrow Neal of Madison, Ala.; two sisters, Hazel Jackson and Ila Mae Cunupp, both of Danville; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Tabernacle by the Rev. Larmar Mooneyham. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Lee Shelton
CHATHAM - Robert Lee "Bobby" Shelton, 57, 1237 Banister Road, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at his residence.
Mr. Shelton was born Dec. 10, 1940, in Pittsylvania County.
He is survived by his wife, Dawne Powell Shelton of the residence.
He was a member of Marion Baptist Church and retired from the Virginia Highway Department.
He was the son of the late Monroe W. Shelton and is survived by his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Haskins Shelton Powell of Chatham.
He is also survived by two daughters, Karen S. Cifers and her husband, Richard Cifers of Chatham and Dianne S. Sulter and her husband, Randolph Sulter of Cocoa, Fla.; a brother, Ronald M. Shelton of Blairs; two sisters, Joan D. Shelton of Chatham and Jane S. Lewis of Blairs; a stepsister, Clara P. Cooper of Chatham; four grandchildren, Kristi Cifers, Wesley Cifers, Casey Sulter and Ashley Sulter.
He was predeceased by a brother, Ray Shelton; and two sisters, Kay Shelton and Anne S. Edwards.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Marion Baptist Church by the Rev. Edward L. Earl and Preston Owen. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Verna Spencer
Verna Lewis Spencer, 90, 214 Kenmore Drive, died Wednesday night, Feb. 11, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 3, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Luther Scott Lewis and Virginia Ann Lewis.
She was first married
to Louis Gravely Martin, who died in 1940. She was later married
to Harry Edward Spencer, who died in 1986.
She had been a resident of Danville since 1983, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a brother, Linwood Lewis of Danville; and a sister, Elizabeth L. Everett of Danville.
Graveside service were conducted 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Bruce Wilson.

Frances Camp
Frances Rogers Camp, 66, 230 Mesa Drive, Georgetown, Texas, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, in Seton Hospital, Austin, Texas.
Born Feb. 13, 1932, in Danville, she was the daughter of Edward Lee Rogers and Norma Eanes Rogers.
She had lived her early years in Pittsylvania County and then moved to Austin and Bryan, Texas. She had attended the St. John's United Methodist Church in Georgetown for the last eight years.
She married
Thomas H. Camp Sr. on March 20, 1953.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Thomas H. Camp Jr. and Landon G. Camp, both of Austin; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. John H. Meadows. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Wilbur Daniels
Wilbur Edward Daniels, 84, 707 Jefferson St., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at Stratford Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 12, 1913, in Timmonsville, S.C., he was the son of Ed Daniels and Gussie Brown Daniels.
He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church where he was active in the men's chorus and was a trustee. He worked on Southern Railway and was a cement contractor, pouring most of the cement at Goodyear. He also was associated with L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home.
Survivors include three daughters, Pearl D. Harris, Jossette D. Griffins and Wilber Lynn Daniels, all of Danville; a son, Fredrick Daniels of Danville; a step-son, Harry Walters Sr. of Danville; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Chapel by the Rev. James Cabell and the Rev. Frankie Jones. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The remains may be viewed Monday afternoon at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 707 Jefferson St.
Evelyn Evans
Evelyn Frances Scruggs Evans, 92, 714 Lee St., died Friday night, Feb. 13, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 9, 1905, in Danville, she was the daughter of James Edward Scruggs and Grace Keaton Scruggs.
Education in the Danville Public Schools, she was a former resident of Washington, D.C., where she worked as a secretary with the Washington Times Herald. She later moved to Miami where she was employed with the Realtor Association of Miami Inc. She had been a resident of Danville since 1970 and was a member of the Mosely Memorial Methodist Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was married
to Charles Noel Evans, who died Oct. 1, 1976.
Survivors include two grandsons, Charles Noel Evans III of Martinsville and John Evans of Inverness, Fla.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Richard Cobb.

David Kelly
RINGGOLD - David James Kelly, 62, of 256 Albert Edmonds Drive, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for several years.
Born Feb. 1, 1936, in Rochester, N.Y., he was the son of Frank Kelly and Zenobia Luckhurst Kelly Bickel.
He had lived in Key West, Fla., before moving to the Ringgold community to live the past four years. He had retired from construction work as a dry wall finisher for health reasons.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a Christian.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements. A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
