Ray Booker
Ray Jackson Booker, 82, of 229 Rocklawn Ave., died on Feb. 14, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in the hospital for 10 days.
Born on Dec. 9, 1915, in the Long Island community of Campbell County, he was the son of George Norman Booker and Lelia Ruth Jackson Booker.
He moved to Danville in 1936, where he was co-owner of Booker and Wimmer Radio and T.V. Service until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church, where he had served on the Deacon Board for many years. He was a long time member of the Virginia Electronics Association of Danville.
On Dec. 18, 1937, he was married
to Evelyn Ludwick Booker, who survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife, of the residence, include a son, Jan Norman Booker of Danville; a daughter, Bonnie B. Kinzer of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Pauline B. Power of Richmond and Elizabeth B. Hutcherson of Burke; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother, Carroll Preston Booker.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. from Moffett Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Ellison. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and at other time at the residence, 229 Rocklawn Ave., Danville, off North Main Street.
Frances Camp
Frances Rogers Camp, 66, 230 Mesa Drive, Georgetown, Texas, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, in Seton Hospital, Austin, Texas.
Born Feb. 13, 1932, in Danville, she was the daughter of Edward Lee Rogers and Norma Eanes Rogers.
She had lived her early years in Pittsylvania County and then moved to Austin and Bryan, Texas. She had attended the St. John's United Methodist Church in Georgetown for the last eight years.
She married
Thomas H. Camp Sr. on March 20, 1953.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Thomas H. Camp Jr. and Landon G. Camp, both of Austin; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. John H. Meadows. Interment
will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
Mary Carter
Mary Rudd Carter, 64, of 541 Third Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 3, 1933, in Danville, she was the daughter of Robert Rudd and Sarah Rowe Rudd. She was married
to Lafayette Carter, who survives.
She was a dietician at Gibson Elementary School for many years.
Survivors include her husband, of the residence, one son, Recus Devon Carter of Williamsburg; one step-daughter, Gloria Jones of Philadelphia; one step-grandson and one brother, James Rudd of New York.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Loyal Baptist Church by Rev. Lovell Maxwell Jr. Interment
will follow at Highland Burial Park.

Wilbur Daniels
Wilbur Edward Daniels, 84, 707 Jefferson St., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at Stratford Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 12, 1913, in Timmonsville, S.C., he was the son of Ed Daniels and Gussie Brown Daniels.
He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church where he was active in the men's chorus and was a trustee. He worked on Southern Railway and was a cement contractor, pouring most of the cement at Goodyear. He also was associated with L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home.
Survivors include three daughters, Pearl D. Harris, Jossette D. Griffins and Wilber Lynn Daniels, all of Danville; a son, Fredrick Daniels of Danville; a step-son, Harry Walters Sr. of Danville; and five grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Chapel by the Rev. James Cabell and the Rev. Frankie Jones. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Garden.
The remains may be viewed Monday afternoon at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 707 Jefferson St.
Joseph Power Sr.
Joseph Quinby Power Sr., 77, a curent resident of Chesterfield County, Virginia, died Sunday morning, Feb. 15, at Chippenham Medical Center after a recent illness.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Pauline Booker Power; a daughter and son-in-law, Carroll J. and J. Daniel Burke; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey B. and Jodi P. Power; six grandchildren, Lisa Power Stanga, Christopher Michael Power, Catherine Quin Burke, Joseph Tyler Burke, Rylie Kaitlin Power and Austin Parrish Power; and one great-grandchild, Chase Michael Stanga.
Mr. Power's first son, Mr. Joseph Q. Power Jr., died in 1981.
Mr. Power is also also surived by three sisters, Mildred P. Cliborne of Richmond, Kathryn P. Jones of Burlington, N.C., and Jane P. Snider of Waynesboro, Va., and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Power was born in Pittsylvania County. He served in the Eighth Air Force during World War II, stationed in England as a B-17 crew member, flying over 30 missions into Germany, including the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, 1944. After completing his tour he returned to the states, married
and moved to Richmond in 1945. He worked at American Tobacco Co., Allied Chemical Corp., and Southern States Coop. before founding his own company, Chesterfield Feed and Seed Co. in 1979. After his retirement he enjoyed gardening and restoring his wife's family farm near Altavista, Va.
His remains rest at the Morrisett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road (Rt. 10) where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Covenant Presbyterian Church. Interment
at Sunset Memorial Park.
Casper Rook
Casper Herman Rook, 84, of 402 Bryant Ave., died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998 at his residence after a month of declining health.
Born on Feb. 13, 1914, in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., he was the son of the late Julian Augusta Rook Sr. and Carrie Jordan Rook.
He had lived most of his life in Danville, and he was retired from Southern Railroad where he had worked as a clerk. He also worked after his retirement as a shipping clerk for Virginia Tobacco Company and Davis Storage Company. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia M. Rook of the residence; a half-brother, J.A. Rook Jr. of Caswell County, N.C., and a half-sister, Elizabeth Massey, also of Caswell County, N.C.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Kendall Jenkins. The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and at other times will be at the residence, 402 Bryant Ave.
Ramsey Shelton
Ramsey Tyler Shelton, 78, of 140 Zion Road, Gretna, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at his residence.
Born Jan. 10, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Ewell W. Shelton and Mary Huffman Shelton. He was predeceased by three brothers, Harold J. Shelton, Haile W. Shelton and Ewell Shelton Jr. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and was retired from BGF Industries Inc. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Meadows Shelton of Penhook; two sons, Carlton T. Shelton and Jay R. Shelton, both of Gretna; one daughter, Cheryl S. Conner of Gretna; one step-daughter, Kathy M. Francis of Gretna; one brother, Carlton "Collie" Shelton of Chatham; four sisters, Virginia Lewis of Gretna, Nannie Shields of Pittsville, Mary Vosburg of Lynchburg and Ora Mann of Danville; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. R.G. Rowland and Ramsey Taylor.
Burial with military honors by V.F.W. Post 4165 and DAV Chapter 46 will follow in Gretna Burial Park.

George Townsend
George W. Townsend, 79, of 834 Ferry Road, died Saturday evening, Feb. 14, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
He was born in Washington County on July 18, 1918, a son of Edward Townsend and Amanda Belle Ewing Townsend.
He was married
to Edith Andis Townsend, who survives. He had spent his earlier years at Abingdon and had lived in Danville since 1951 where he was a supervisor for Dan River Inc., before retiring. He was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and a member of the Men's Bible Class. He was also a member of the Woodman of the World and the Odd Fellows.
Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include one son, George "Tommy" Townsend of Gloucester City, N.J.; five brothers, Richard Townsend, Floyd Townsend, Herbert Townsend, Jesse Townsend, and Johnny Townsend, all of Bristol; two sisters, Rachel Moore and Audrey Goodman, both of Danville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Daryl Joyce and Rev. Homer Bowman. Interment
will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7-8:30 p.m.and at other times will be at the residence.
La Rue Carter
CHATHAM - La Rue Overton Carter, 71, 14512 U.S. Highway 29, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville.
Born May 17, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Henry Eugene Carter and Sue Overton Carter.
She was a member of Watson Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary M. Carter of Chatham.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Watson Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. William C. Thomas. Interment
will be in Hillcrest Burial Park, Chatham.

Helene Harris
BRONX, N.Y. - Helene Holt Harris, 2975 Bainbridge Ave., died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Cabrina Hospital in Manhattan.
Born March 15, 1943, in Danville, she was a daughter of Herman Holt Sr. and Dorothy Hundley Holt.
She was married
to Charlie L. Harris, who predeceased her.
She was a production worker and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Bronx.
Survivors include three brothers, Herman Holt Jr., Marvin Holt Sr. and Gary Holt Sr., all of Danville, Va.; and four sisters, Jean Young of Bronx, Stacy Stewart of Leander, Texas,
Evelyn Miles of Alexandria, Va., and Novella Cabin of Austin, Texas.
Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cunningham & Hughes Memorial Chapel in Danville, Va., by the Rev. Walter Tinsley. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Nannie Holley
Nannie M. Holley, 86, 231 S. Ridge St., Apt. 201, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 9, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Benjamin H. Matherly and Minnie Steele Matherly.
She was married
to Sam Holley, who died in 1962.
She was a member of Christians United Baptist Church and worked for Dan River Inc.
Survivors include a daughter, Faye Hedrick of Danville; a stepdaughter, Peggy Sprague of Milton, N.C.; two sons, Wilford Matherly of Danville and Raymond G. Matherly of Mannasas; five sisters, Kathleen M. Payne of Danville, Mary M. Musser of Florida, Bertha M. Crouch of Yanceyville, N.C., Dorothy M. Merricks of Kernersville, N.C., and Esther M. Rigney of Chatham; two brothers, Jimmy T. Matherly of Martinsville and Frankie R. Matherly of Callands; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Virginia Hunt
Virginia Scearce Hunt, 73, 302 Girard St., died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 27, 1924, in Danville, she was a daughter of James Jeffress Jones and Maude Penn Jones.
She was married
to Harold Hudgins Hunt, who survives.
She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
For 30 years, she worked as a battery filler at Dan River Inc.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Linda Scearce LaPrade of Danville and Kay Scearce Rakes of Greensboro, N.C.; two sons, Forrest Scearce and Douglas Ray Scearce, both of Danville; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Inez Jones; and two brothers, Alvis E. Jones and James J. Jones Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLain. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
