John Millhiser
SOUTH BOSTON - John Henry Millhiser, 72, 1185 Deer Ridge Trail, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at his residence.
Born May 24, 1925, in Halifax County, he was the son of Michael Millhiser and Virginia Smith Millhiser.
He was married
to Laura Lewis Millhiser, who survives.
He was a member of Arbor Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his wife of South Boston, survivors include two daughters, Janet M. Gent of Great Falls and Dale M. Smith of Danville; a sister, Rosa M. Davis of Lynchburg; and two granddaughters and three step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, John Ray Millhiser.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Arbor Baptist Church by the Rev. Averette Witcher. Burial will be in Oak Level Presbyterian Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Bessie Stowe
DRY FORK - Bessie Worley Stowe, 91, 149 Pleasant Gap Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville.
Born March 7, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Worley and Emma Liggion Worley.
She was married
to Oscar Raymond Stowe, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Raymond Stowe of Dry Fork; a daughter, Elizabeth S. Sharp of Dry Fork; three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Roger Collins and the Rev. Clay Knick. Burial will be in Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Carrington Tucker Jr.
Carrington Lee Tucker Jr., 67, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 16, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center, where he had resided since April 1984.
Born Nov. 6, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Carrington Lee Tucker Sr. and Elizabeth Custer Tucker.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he worked at Laramore Construction Company for several years before going to work at Thompson Redi Mix, where he worked for 22 years.
Survivors include a son, Dollie Lee Tucker of Dry Fork; and three sisters, Dorothy T. McCubbins and Elizabeth T. Vukadenvic, both of Danville, and Janice T. Ware of Garner, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Steven W. Greer.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Dorothy T. McCubbins, 647 Jackson Heights.

Margaret Herndon Brumfield
A graveside service for Margaret Herndon Brumfield, 63, of Prince George, was conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George.
She died Feb. 12, 1998, at MCV Hospital.
She was born in Danville. She was a retired patient care technician at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.
preceded in death by her father, M.H. "Pap" Herndon, she is survived by her husband, Arthur L. "Ott" Brumfield of the home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Douglas Brumfield of Chester and Audie and Paula Brumfield of Prince George; her mother, Virginia Herndon of Danville; a brother, M.H. Herndon Jr. of Danville; and a sister, Sandra Kay Ray of Raleigh, N.C.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in her memory to the Jack W. Hall Memorial Fund of Danville, P.O. Box 251, Danville, Va 24543.
Doris Crutchfield
Doris Boaze Crutchfield, 81, 125 Annhurst Drive, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 14, 1917, in Danville, she was the daughter of Daniel Benjamin Boaze and Virginia Lacey Boaze.
On July 24, 1948, she was married
to James "Jimmy" Garnett Crutchfield, who survives.
A lifelong resident of the Danville area, she was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ira Yeatts and the Rev. Tommy Deal. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Frances Hubbard
Frances Vaughan Hubbard, 91, formerly of 154 Sunset Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Stratford Health Care Center after two years of declining health. She had been a resident of Stratford Health Care Center for a year.
Born April 29, 1906, in Danville, she was a daughter of Robert A. Vaughan and Mary DuBose Vaughan.
She was married
to Percy Harry Hubbard, who died Dec. 16, 1987.
A lifelong resident of Danville, she was a graduate of Danville High School.
She was a charter member of Rivermont Baptist Church and Rivermont W.M.S., and had taught Sunday school for a number of years.
Survivors include two sons, Frank J. Hubbard of Aylett and Charles E. Hubbard of Roxboro, N.C.; a daughter, Mary Ann H. Shelton of Danville; a sister, Virginia V. Spruill of Matthews, N.C.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Louise A. Vaughan and Agnes V. Wright.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Jack Waddell and the Rev. Jack F. Heinsohn Jr.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Mary Ann H. Shelton, 649 Timberlake Drive.
Suegenia Kympton
RICHMOND - Suegenia Demaree Kympton, widow of Howard Wellford Kympton Jr., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998.
Born in Winchester, Ky., she was the daughter of Denzil C. and Katharyn S. Demaree.
She received a BA degree from the University of Louisville.
She was a tireless volunteer in both Louisville and Richmond.
In 1990, she retired from the Volunteer Gift Shop manager position of Chippenham Hospital with over 10,000 hours of volunteer service.
She was active in American Red Cross as a volunteer nurse while in Louisville and with Virginia Museum Gift Shop in Richmond.
She also served as treasurer of Virginia Federation of Women's Club. She was also active in Alpha Xi Delta sorority.
She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Survivors include two sons, David D. Kympton and wife, Connie P. Kympton, of Midlothian, and Howard W. Kympton III and wife, Sherry G. Kympton of Hunt Valley, Md.; and two grandchildren, 1st Lt. Spencer T. Kympton, U.S. Army, and Demaree K. Kympton.
A private graveside service will be held in Highland Burial Park in Danville at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998.

Mildred McBride
Mildred Haley McBride, 171 S. Hunter St., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 26, 1917, in Draper, N.C., she was a daughter of Alonza Haley and Larmie Ayers Haley.
She was married
to Clarence Wyatt McBride, who died Oct. 27, 1980.
She was a member of Forestlawn Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Smith of Danville; a son, Bobby McBride of Danville; a sister, Eva McHaney of Danville; a brother, Jesse Haley of Danville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Hazel O'Neal.

Elder Merion 'Sam' Merricks
Elder Merion C. "Sam" Merricks, 86, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, formerly of Blairs, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Sept. 9, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Rufus Hayes Merricks and Lizzie Evans Merricks.
He was married
to Annie Garland Giles Merricks, who died Feb. 2, 1991.
A lifelong resident of Pittsylvania County, he was a route salesman for Pepsi Cola Bottling Co.
He was a member of Old Center Primitive Baptist Church in Stuart, and was an elder of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Marion M. Evans of Blairs and Shirley M. Vaughan of Chatham; three half sisters, Lemma Powell of Danville, Louise Carter of Stoneville, N.C., and Ola Bashaw of Richmond; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Larry Crotts, Elder Richard Aldman and Elder Winford Young. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Rebecca Mitchell
Rebecca Maxie Mitchell, 64, 2549 Mount Cross Road, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 17, 1998, at her residence after a brief illness.
Born July 13, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Joseph Raymond Maxie Sr. and Elsie Franklin Maxie Collie, who survives.
On May 4, 1963, she was married
to Robert Edward Mitchell, who survives.
A resident of the Mount Cross community for most of her life, she was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church.
She worked as a customer service clerk for the city of Danville in the water, gas and electric department for a number of years.
In addition to her mother of Danville and her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Carlton Mitchell and Stan Mitchell, both of the residence; and three sisters, Evelyn M. Pena and Naomi M. McDaniel, both of Danville, and Margaret M. Hearp of Dry Fork.
She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph R. Maxie Jr, who died Aug. 28, 1996.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. J. Wayne Crews.
The family will be at the residence.

Dr. Luke Smith
RICHMOND - Dr. Luke B. Smith, former minister of First Baptist Church of Danville, and professor of religion and director of in-service ministerial programs at Averett College, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at his residence.
He served the church from 1965 to 1971 and at Averett from 1977-1979. From 1979 to 1990, he taught and supervised ministry students at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Before his service in Danville, Dr. Smith was assistant secretary for missionaries through what is now the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for three years.
His pastoral service also included a number of churches in Georgia and South Carolina.
A native of Carrollton, Ga., he was a graduate of University of Georgia and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and earned his doctor of philosophy degree from University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
Though Dr. Smith retired in 1990, he continued to teach part-time at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond.
Survivors include his wife, Janie W. Smith and a daughter, Cherry Seagraves, both of Richmond; a son, Mark W. Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at Northminster Baptist Church, Westwood and Moss Side avenues, Richmond.
