Doris Turpin
Doris Hayden Turpin, 71, 104 Turpin St., died early Tuesday morning, Feb. 17, 1998, at Stratford Health Care Center after several years of declining health.
Born April 14, 1926, in Danville, she was the daughter of Lonnie Lewis Hayden and Myrtle Gee Hayden.
She was married
to James Aubrey Turpin, who predeceased her.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she worked for Dan River Inc.
She attended Riveroak Church of God.
Survivors include a daughter, Audrey T. Moss of Danville; three sons, Lawrence Turpin, Carl Kelly Turpin and Mark James Turpin, all of Danville; and four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Tim Nuckles. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Audrey T. Moss, 104 Westridge Drive.
Clara Angle
MARTINSVILLE - Clara Hopkins Angle, 87, 511 Monroe St., died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Aug. 3, 1910, in Henry County, she was a daughter of Austin Morris Hopkins and Susie Crews Hopkins.
She was married
to James A. Angle, who predeceased her.
She was a retired employee of Clearview Elementary School.
She attended Wilson Street Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include a son, the Rev. James Morris Angle of Christiansburg; a daughter, Betty Angle Hager of Martinsville; a sister, Georgia Hopkins Franklin of Martinsville; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Wilson Street Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. James M. Angle and the Rev. Barry Crumpton. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at McKee-Stone Funeral Chapel.
John Carter
FAIRFAX - John William Carter, 76, 3911 Egan Drive, died Monday evening, Feb. 16, 1998, at Henrico Doctor's Hospital in Richmond.
Born Feb. 3, 1922, in Henry County, he was the son of Brula K. Carter and Mary Virginia Riddle Carter.
He was married
to Mary Lee Miller Carter, who survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Paciffico.
Since 1946, he had made his home in Fairfax, where he was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
He worked as a steamfitter in Washington, D.C., before retiring at age 62.
He was also a member of Disabled American Veterans.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Stellman of Greenville, S.C., and Claudia L. Brown of Richmond; a son, John William Carter Jr. of Fairfax; four sisters, Beatrice Miller of Eden, N.C., and Mary Sue Little of Drumpoint Beach, Md., and Maderia Kovach of Seaford, Del., and Maxine Ely of Alexandria; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John Bonds. Burial will be in County Line Christian Church cemetery in Axton.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Dottie Chandler
Dorothy Bailey Chandler, 80, 320 Northmont Blvd., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and two days in the hospital.
Born March 26, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Walter Shepherd Bailey and Mamie Hines Bailey.
On Nov. 12, 1949, she was married
to Ralph Lee Chandler Sr., who died Dec. 31, 1987.
A life long resident of Pittsylvania County and Danville, she was a graduate of Danville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.
She had retired from the Dan River Medical Department of Dan River, Inc., after several years of service as a nurse.
She was a member of Melville Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Ralph Lee Chandler II of Danville and Henry Bailey Chandler of Norfolk; two sisters, Chloe Bailey Slayton and Ida B. Bailey, both of Danville; and a brother, James G. Bailey of Gretna.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Don Preston Bailey; and a grandson, Jason Stuart Chandler.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Charles Swanson. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 320 Northmont Blvd., off of North Main Street.
Frances 'Pampy' Doss
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Frances Motley "Pampy" Moss, 82, died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 17, 1998, at Heather Hill Nursing Home in New Port Richey after two years of declining health and 11 months in the nursing home.
Born April 21, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of L.A. Motley and Minnie Shelton Motley.
She was married
to Drewie C. "Shorty" Doss, who died May 23, 1993.
A resident of Danville, Va., for most of her life, she was the personnel director at Health Tex, Inc., for a number of years.
She was a member of Thalia Garden Club and Bannister Springs Primitive Baptist Church in Pittsylvania County, Va.
Survivors include a son, Donald C. Doss Sr. of New Port Richey; a sister, Helena Cox of Danville, Va.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Melvin Shelton and Elder H.P. Sommers. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Thomas Hawker
Thomas W. Hawker, 57, 402 Melrose Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 7, 1941, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Edwin Lester Hawker and Nancy Wyatt Hawker, who survives.
On Sept. 30, 1960, he was married
to Geraldine Elizabeth Niday Hawker, who also survives.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was co-owner and operator of Tightsqueeze Golf Shop and Driving Range, and had co-owned H & H Logistics. Earlier, he had been employed by Disston for 30 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Keeling, survivors include three daughters, Lori J. Hawker and Kristi H. Robertson, both of Danville, and Ronda C. Hawker of Ringgold; a son, Gary S. Hawker of Los Angeles; three brothers, Jesse Carroll Hawker of Danville, James Edwin Hawker of Keeling and Allen L. Hawker of Ringgold; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Jennie Clarkson
Jennie Bell Clarkson, 104, 231 Spruce St., died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born April 8, 1893, in Pelham, N.C., she was a daughter of Jack Doe and Belle Anderson Doe.
She was married
to Clarence Clarkson, who predeceased her.
Survivors include a brother, Johnny Doe of Baltimore; and a sister, Lizzie Pearl Doe of Richmond.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. John Doe. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Georgia Hudson
SOUTH BOSTON - Georgia Permelia Hudson, 79, 502 Philpott Road, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born July 4, 1918, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Charlie Jasper Hudson and Jewel Cole Hudson.
She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, Giles Hudson of Goose Creek, S.C.; and four sisters, Glenn Daniels of Roxboro, N.C., Elsie Jones of Cluster Springs, Marie Couch of Halifax and Theresa Smith of South Boston.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Grover Stevens and the Rev. Michael Phillips. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

David Martin
David Joseph Martin, 58, 213 Robertson Ave., died Thursday afternoon, March 19, 1998, at his residence.
Born Sept. 1, 1939, in Spangler, Penn., he was a son of Joseph Martin and Rebecca Buchanan Martin Dillon, who survives.
He was married
to Cathie Tompkins Martin, who also survives.
He had served in the U.S. Marines for four years.
Since 1991, he had been a resident of Danville, where he was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church and the Moose Club.
He worked in construction jobs with the union local 1240, working in the oil fields.
In addition to his mother of Bradenton, Fla., and his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Sharon Martin of Durham, N.C.; two sons, Steven G. Martin and Joseph William Martin, both of the residence; a sister, Jo Ann St. Lawrence of Bradenton; and two brothers, Edward Martin and Les Martin, both of Bradenton.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Woodberry Hills Baptist Church by the Rev. Lewis Harris and the Rev. Wade Leonard. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery with military honors performed by the American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.

George Evans
George E. Evans, 86, 40 Baltimore Ave., died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 19, 1998, at his residence after a decline in health for 16 months and in serious condition for the past two weeks.
Born Oct. 22, 1911, in Coopers, W. Va., he was a son of Mr. Evans and Laura Craddock Evans.
He was formerly married
to Willie Mae Eanes, who survives of Danville. He was later married
to Oneida Woods Evans, who survives.
A resident of Danville for most of his life, he had been owner and president of Schoolfield Lumber & Plywood Corporation for 46 years.
He was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church on Davis Street.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Nancy Jane Brown of Danville; four sons, Daryl Keith Evans and David Wayne Evans, both of Danville, and Billy Randale Evans of Reading, Penn., and Maynard Evans of Denver; two sisters, Elizabeth Holliday and Helen Loudermilk, both of Martinsville; two brothers, Thomas C. Craddock of Alexandria and Ralph W. Craddock of Florida; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters and a brother.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Danville Memorial Gardens by Elder Ed Komorowki and Elder Charles Hutcherson.
