Curtis Barksdale
Funeral services for Curtis Barksdale, 82, 1026 Halifax Road, will be conducted 12 p.m. today at East New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerome Morris. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
He died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 26, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Barksdale and Essie Holmes Barksdale.
He was married
to Ruth Foster Barksdale, who survives.
He was a member of East New Hope Baptist Church and was retired from Southern Railway Co.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Louise B. Dabbs of Richmond; a brother, George Barksdale of Baltimore; a sister, Jessie Murriel of Philadelphia; and three grandchildren.
The family will be at the residence.

Dera Johnson
Funeral services for Dera Cooper Johnson, 85, 1097 Franklin Turnpike, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Grace Design United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Holcomb-McLain. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
She died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at her residence.
Born Jan. 13, 1913, she was a daughter of Henry A. Cooper and Eugenia Kendrick Cooper.
She was married
to Henry T. Johnson, who died May 11, 1962.
A lifelong resident of Pittsylvania County and the Danville area, she worked as a teacher for the Pittsylvania County School System and retired after 38 years of service.
She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Daniel Johnson of Danville; and two grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by five brothers and a sister.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Shirley Lewis
Shirley H. Lewis, 62, 600 Ingram St., died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 12, 1935, in Kentuck, she was the daughter of Harry L. Hobbs and Nettie Virginia Bailey Hobbs.
She was married
to Nathan W. Lewis, who survived.
She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband, survivors include four brothers, Harry L. Hobbs Jr. of Ruffin, N.C., and Willie P. Hobbs of Danville, Robert L. Hobbs of Radford and Charles H. Hobbs of Roanoke.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Jimmy Turner.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.
Etta Logan
JAVA - Etta Mae Logan, 68, 141 Petty Lane, died Thursday morning in the Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.
Born in Pittsylvania County on July 29, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Dillard Logan and the late Ollie Coleman Logan.
She received her B.S. degree from Virginia State College in Petersburg and she received her master's degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Pittsylvania County School System as a teacher for 39 years.
She was a member of Riceville Baptist Church in Java, where she served as a pianist and as president of senior choir.
She is survived by a son, the Rev. Alvin Kurt Williams of Danville; three sisters, Pinkie Sue Williams of Danville and Oatrice Logan and Clara L. Dixon, both of Java; a brother, Clevester Logan and his wife, Mattie of Charlottesville; two sisters-in-law, Lizzie K. Logan of New York and Thelma F. Logan of Philadelphia; an aunt, Otelia Womack of Java; and a host of other relatives.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Fred Logan and Birdie Logan.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Riceville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Wilson Oliver
Wilson Woodron Oliver, 82, 275 Grant St. Ext., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 25, 1915, in Yanceyville, N.C., he was the son of Abe and Maggie Oliver.
He was married
to Gloria Lee Oliver, who survives.
He was a self-employed carpenter.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Woodron Oliver of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and Langston Oliver of Raleigh, N.C., and Douglas Oliver and DeWayne Oliver, both of Danville; three daughters, Tina Williams, Creola Oliver and Mildred Oliver, all of Danville; a sister, Mary Mills of Yanceyville, N.C.; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Sinai Glorious Church of God by Bishop Arthur Linder. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Gurline Thompson, 51, 687 E. Stokes St., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at her residence.
Born June 20, 1946, in Danville, she was a daughter of Samuel Thompson and Odell Chattin Thompson, who survives.
In addition to her mother of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Jessica Thompson and Dannette Charles, both of Danville; two sons, Larry Thompson and Frank Thompson, both of Danville; a sister, Ardell Thompson of Danville; a brother, Ezell Thompson of Danville; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Hattie Chatham
Hattie Austin Chatham, 84, of the Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Martinsville and formerly of Axton, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, at the Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center.
Born Feb. 11, 1914, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Thomas King Austin and Nannie B. Bowles Austin.
She was cafeteria manager of the Axton Elementary School for many years. She was a member of the Axton Baptist Church and was active in the Martinsville-Henry County Senior Citizens prior to her illness.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Theodore C. Austin.
Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl C. McFadin and Betty C. Branch, both of Martinsville; one brother, Thomas B. Austin of Ruffin, N.C.; two grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at McKee-Stone Funeral Services by the Rev. Charles Haley. Burial will follow in Mountain View cemetery in Rocky Mount.

Theresa Critz
Theresa Motley Critz, 83, of Martinsville, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, in Kings Grant.
Born Jan. 10, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Uriah Taylor Motley and Lilly Mae Gardner Motley.
She was retired from DuPont and had been a charter member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Fred Hampton Critz.
Survivors include two brothers, Uriah T. Motley Jr. of Danville and the Rev. Jullian M. Motley of Wake Forest; and three sisters, Lynwood Snead of Danville, Burnice Lacks of Clover and Janell Robbins of Martinsville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Startling Avenue Baptist Church by Dr. David Adkins and the Rev. Jullian Motley. Interment
will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Carolyn Ann Martin, 44, of 103 Pleasant View Apt. F, Danville, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 6, 1953, in Danville, she was the daughter of Bobby McCain and Catherine Williamson McCain.
In addition to her mother, survivors include two daughters, Saundera Martin and Cindy Martin, both of Danville; two sons, Anthony Martin and Clarence Martin Jr., both of Danville; two brothers, Charles McCain and Elbert McCain, all of Danville; five sisters, Patricia McCain, Brenda McCain, Bobbie McCain, Vanessa McCain and Theressa McCain, all of Danville; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Saundra McCain, 115 Pleasant View, Apt. C.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Samuel Griffith. Interment

Arch O. Griggs
PORTSMOUTH - Arch O. Griggs, 79, of the 5000 block of Deep Creek Blvd., died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, in a Portsmouth hospital.
A native of Draper, N.C., he was married
to Jean South Griggs, who predeceased him.
He was a retired member of the U.S. Navy and a survivor of Pearl Harbor during World War II.
He was a retired foreman for Shop 38 in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
He was a member of the Vicksville Hunt Club.
Survivors include two sons, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John R. Griggs of Florida, and Gary G.
Griggs of Portsmouth; three brothers, Pete Griggs, Archie Griggs, and Philip Griggs; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be held 1 p.m. Thursday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Sturtevant Funeral Home Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel.
John C. Miller Jr.
RICHMOND - John Clifford Miller Jr., 90, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, in Warrenton.
He was born Feb. 5, 1908, in Richmond.
He was a retired chairman of the board of Miller Manufacturing and former president of the board of visitors of Virginia Military Institute.
He was married
to Lizora Schoolfield Miller, who was born in Danville.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter and her husband, Lizora Miller Yonce and Samuel McClay Yonce; and four grandsons, Samuel McClay Yonce Jr., Logan Hanes Yonce, Clifford Miller Yonce, and J. Clifford Miller IV; and one granddaughter, Laura Swift Miller; one great-grandson, Samuel McClay Yonce III; and one sister, Mrs. Collins Denny.
He was a member of the Class of 1928 at VMI and graduate of the Harvard School of Business, Class of 1931.
He also owned and operated two dairy farms for 50 years - Mount Vernon at Sperryville, and Beauregard at Brandy Station.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Richmond. Interment
will be in the Hollywood cemetery in Richmond. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. at the residence of J. Clifford Miller, III, 372 Lexington Road, Richmond.

Irene P. Patterson
HURT - Irene Perkins Patterson, 77, 5300 Scott Jacobs Memorial Road, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born Nov. 4, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John William Perkins and Hattie Parsons Perkins Irby.
She was married
to Roy James Patterson, who predeceased her.
She is survived by one sister, Mabel Perkins Patterson of Gretna.
She was predeceased by five brothers, Russell Perkins, W.R. "Boots" Perkins, Lloyd Perkins, Lee Perkins and John Raymond "June" Perkins, Sr.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Spring Road Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Ashworth, the Rev. Shelby Royal and Ronnie Simpson. Interment
will follow in Rebecca Jane Parsons Family cemetery.
