Nancy Rowland Satterwhite Matherly
DANVILLE, Va. - Nancy Rowland Satterwhite Matherly, 69, of 677 Arnett Blvd., Apt. 2A, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 at 9:05 p.m.
Born June 9, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Claude Swanson Rowland and Mattie Barker Rowland, both deceased.
She was founder and operator of Danville Sitting Service for 28 years. She was manager of Royal Terrace Apts. and Danberry Apts. until her health failed. She was a former member of ABWA and a member of the Board of Directors for Goodwill Industries. She was a former member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
She first married George Satterwhite on Jan. 9, 1954, who predeceased her. She later married James Matherly on March 3, 1981, who also predeceased her.
She is survived by three daughters: Margaret L. Satterwhite and Donna S. Parker, both of Richmond, and Beth Laleman of Tennessee; and one son, Wayne Laleman of South Carolina; four sisters: Margie R. Petty and Ruth R. Williams, both of Danville, Evelyn R. Ferguson of Swartz Creek, Mich. and Faye R. Poteat of Providence, N.C.; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Claude S. Rowland, Jr. and Millard C. Rowland.
A private service will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home, Inc., 2025 N. Main St., Danville.

Anne Jamison Powell
DANVILLE, Va. - Anne Jamison Powell, 83, of 161 Canterbury Road, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Nov. 20, 1918, in Bryan, Texas, she was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. H.B. Jamison.
She was married on Aug. 27, 1941 to A.C. Powell, who survives.
She was educated in the Richmond City Schools and was a 1941 graduate of Danville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for a number of years at the hospital until retirement in 1990. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany and the Wednesday Club.
In addition to her husband of Danville, she is survived by a son, A. Carter Powell II of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Gayle C. Powell of Danville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Roberta Watson.
The funeral wil be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. James Mathieson officiating.

Myrtle M. Sampson
BOWIE, Md. - Myrtle M. Sampson of Bowie, Md., died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002. The wife of William H. Sampson; she is also survived by six children, Catherine Sampson, Carol Colon, Linda Goette, Nancy Agee, Glen Sampson, and Timothy Sampson; one sister, Emma Gurule; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Lucille Stanley Strader
DANVILLE, Va. - Lucille Stanley Strader, 88, of 209 Ashlyn Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 30, 1914, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Stanley and Rosie Allen Stanley.
She lived her entire life in the Danville area, worked for Dan River, Inc. and also farmed.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She was married to William Strader, who predeceased her in 1984.
She is survived by a son, Bobby G. Strader; two sisters, Pearl Garrett and Manerva Pruitt, all of Danville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the son's residence, 804 Holland Road.

Nancy Andrews
HURT, Va. - Nancy Farmer Andrews, age 60, of 148 Sheffy Drive, Hurt died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born June 28, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Elizabeth Dillard Arthur of Hurt and the late Luther Irvin Farmer. Mrs. Andrews was an active member of Zion United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, a former youth worker and a member of the Spiritual Life Singers. She was a retired employee of Altavista Family Physicians.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Herman O. Andrews, of the residence; one son and daughter-in-law, H. Jason and Jessica Andrews of Gretna; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Barry Wyatt of Gretna; one brother, Steve Farmer of Hurt; three sisters, Gaye Bray of Danville, Judy Williamson of Lynchburg and Mary Pickrel of Hurt; four grandchildren, Jacob Wyatt, Meghan Wyatt, Rebecca Andrews and Emily Andrews.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Monday, July 22, 2002, at Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Harold Thornton and Ramsey Taylor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 148 Sheffy Drive, Hurt.

Louise Bradner
CHATHAM, Va. - Louise Taylor Bradner, 86, of Guildfield Heights, Apt. 19, Chatham, Va. died peacefully Friday, July 19, 2002, at 9:30 p.m. at Gretna Health Care Center after three weeks of declining health. She was the last member of her immediate generation. Mrs. Bradner was born September 15, 1915, in Pittsylvania County and was the daughter of the late James Neal Taylor and Mrs. Beatrice Craft Taylor.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, George Bradner, a daughter, Lorraine Bradner, three sisters, Prince Anna Taylor, Marion Venable and Georgia Fuller and a brother, James Taylor.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed at Oak Grove Lodge, was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and the XYZ Senior Citizen Club.
Surviving are ten daughters, Irene Reynolds and Beatrice Logan of Springfield, Mass., Virginia M. Reynolds and husband, L.E. and Linda Gilbert and husband James all of Gretna, VA., Vernell Jones and husband, Douglas of Danville, VA, Sheva Green and husband, Cleveland of Martinsville, VA, Janice Daye and husband, Bobby of Callands, Pearl Vaden and husband, Charlie and Frances Coles and husband, Jessie, Jr. and Joann Davis and husband, Walter, Jr. all of Chatham, VA; two sons, Jim Neal Bradner of Seat Pleasant, MD and George Bradner, Jr. of Chatham, 46 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. from Macedonia Baptist Church, Chatham, VA by Rev. Damon Hairston and Rev. Hubert White with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Viewing will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home.

Roy Eanes
DANVILLE, Va. - Roy Bernard Eanes, 76, of 177 Starling Ave., died July 18, 2002, at his residence. He had been in declining health for more than two years.
Born July 1, 1926, he was the son of William Abner Eanes and Delma Edwards Eanes Clay.
He was married Nov. 15, 1944 to Elizabeth Ann Barksdale Eanes, who survives. He had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville and worked for 41 years in maintenance at Durham Hosiery Mills as a fixer. He was a member of Glenwood Memorial Baptist Church and was a life member of the Improved Order of Red Men, Poquoson Tribe #124.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include, one son, Michael David Eanes of Danville; and one sister, Beulah Eanes Holley.
He was predeceased by one daughter, Carolyn Ann Eanes and one brother, William Coleman Eanes.
The graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Carl Burger and the Rev. Mac Burgess officiating.
The family received friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and will receive friends at other times at the residence, 177 Starling Ave.

Dorothy Fitzgerald
DANVILLE, Va. - Dorothy Fitzgerald, 89, of 206 Beavers Mill Road and formerly of New York, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at the Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.
Born April 28, 1913 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Ellis and Nannie Jones.
She was married to Wyatt Fitzgerald, who predeceased her, and she was the last survivor of her immediate family.
She is survived by one daughter, Rosley Dixon of Danville; and one son, Jesse Fitzgerald of Blanch, N.C.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at White Oak Grove Baptist Church in Dry Fork with the Rev. Edward Pope officiating. Interment will follow at Greater Triumph Baptist Church Cemetery in Chatham.

William Harris
BLAIRS, Va. - William Nathaniel Harris, 18, of 193 Mac Road, died Friday, July 19, 2002, due to an automobile accident in Pittsylvania County.
Born April 6, 1984, in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of Charles Bruce Harris and Leshia Shay Boothe Adkins, who both survive.
He lived most of his life in Pittsylvania County and was a student at Chatham High School and was attending summer school at Gretna High School. He also attended the Pittsylvania County Vo-Tech School studying Heating and Air-Conditioning. He was a member of the Chatham High School F.F.A. and worked at Motley Dairy. He was of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one stepmother, Celine Harris of Danville; one sister, Wendy Nicole Harris of Blairs; one stepbrother, Alan DeAndrea of Danville; one stepsister, Alexandria DeAndrea of Danville; paternal grandparents, Eugene and Wanda Smith, both of Danville; maternal grandparents, Harry and Nan Boothe, both of Danville; and great-grandmother, Witcher B. Boothe.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

SUTHERLIN, Va. - Catherine Howard Milam, 29, of 1944 Laurel Grove Road, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Jan. 23, 1973, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of William Edward Milam and Peggy H. Milam, who both survive.
She attended the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Danville and Laurel Grove Baptist Church in Sutherlin.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include, one brother, William E. "Billy" Milam Jr. of Sutherlin; five sisters, Myra Ann Milam and Margaret Milam Sexton, both of Sutherlin, Elizabeth Milam Beggarly of South Boston, Shirley Jo Milam Hite of Ringgold and Ann Marie Milam Thackston of Halifax.
The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, at Milam Family Cemetery in Sutherlin with the Rev. Bill Owsley, Rev. Kenneth Benson and Rev. James Ward officiating.

Virginia Oswalt
CHATHAM, Va. - Virginia Nenon Oswalt, 78, died July 15, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Ms. Oswalt, who resided in Chatham as a child, returned to her family home here from Mobile, Ala., almost 35 years ago, enjoying Chatham's hospitality and charm.
Over the years her great love of animals led her to adopt many cats and dogs, bringing them back to full health and enabling them to live full lives. Her interests also included Duke University basketball and University of Alabama football. She was employed for 20 years at the Danville Golf Club.
Ms. Oswalt was the only daughter of Gladys Hargrave Nenon Brown and Thomas Ulmer Nenon. Her beloved brother, Hunt Nenon, had previously passed away.
Survivors include two nieces, Emily Nenon of Anchorage, Alaska, and Julie Nenon of Alexandria; one nephew, Eric Nenon of Arlington; one sister-in-law, Eloise Folkers Nenon of West Palm Beach, Fla., and her dear friend, Thelma Craft of Chatham.
A family graveside service will be conducted Monday, July 22, 2002, in the Chatham Burial Park by the Rev. Charles Wickham. Plans for the memorial service are yet pending. Henry Seamster
NATHALIE, Va. - Henry Lee Seamster, 78, of 2031 Cousin Lane, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 16, 1923, in Halifax County, he was the son of Jessie J. Seamster and Nettie Paul Clay Seamster.
He was married to Virginia Pierce Seamster, who survives, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Republican Grove.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Nathalie, include, two sons, Elwood Lee Seamster of Clover, S.C. and Paul Lewis Seamster of Nathalie; one sister, Gracie S. Newcomb of Gretna; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with the Rev. Dr. Elwood Seamster and the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Aubrey Shelton
WAVERLY, Va. - Aubrey Green Shelton, 78, of Waverly, died June 25, 2002, at Waverly Healthcare Center following a brief illness.
He was born June 19, 1924.
He is survived by one sister, Sarah S. Maifield of Waverly; one brother, C. Easley Shelton of Hopewell; five nieces; and seven nephews.
The memorial service was held June 28, 2002, at Waverly United Methodist Church.
Charles Smith
CHATHAM, Va. - Charles Wade Smith, 85, of 449 Smith Road, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem.
Born Oct. 7, 1916, in Museville, he was the son of William Irvin Smith and Mary Virgie Pearson Smith.
He was married to Lois Reynolds Smith. He lived all of his life in the Callands Community. Prior to retirement, he was associated with a mens clothing store. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the Army.
He is survived by one son, Harold L. Smith of Mebane, N.C.; one brother, Douglas Smith of Danville; one sister, Virginia S. LaPrad of Newport News; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Strawberry Church with Elder Thomas Soloman officiating. Interment will follow at Smith Family Cemetery.
