Katie Mae Stevenson, 47, 113 North Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, at her residence.
Born Feb. 8, 1951, in Danville, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Stevenson Sr. and Mary Robertson Stevenson, who survives.
She attended the Danville Public Schools and was employed with Hooker's Furniture Company for many years.
She was a member of Bibleway Worldwide Church.
In addition to her mother of Danville, survivors include a daughter, D'Andrea Denise Stevenson of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Stella Gunter and Mary Louise Fitzgerald, both of Danville, and Irene Ford of Washington, D.C.; and a brother, Thomas Stevenson Jr. of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Bibleway Worldwide Church by Apostle Lawrence G. Campbell Sr. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Juanita Waddell
Juanita Davis Waddell, 83, 1050 Walter Beavers Road, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 16, 1914, in Bluefield, W. Va., she was the daughter of William Davis and Lula Ferguson Davis.
She was married
to Frank Waddell, who predeceased her.
She was employed by P. Lorillard Tobacco for many years.
Survivors include six daughters, Nancy Crews, Pastor Louise Hayes, Margaret Harris, Hazel Scott, Judy Cosby and Priscilla Walters, all of Danville; five sons, Marvin Waddell, Bishop William Waddell and Richard Waddell, all of Danville, and Tony Waddell of Blairs and Roy Waddell of Dry Fork; and a brother, Obery Davis of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Kentuck Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Jesse Fitz. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Mary Apple
Mary Apple, 56, 127 Warren St., died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 24, 1941, in Danville, she was a daughter of Henry Apple and Viola Harrison Apple, who survives.
In addition to her mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Mark Apple and Kenneth Apple, both of Danville; a sister, Barbara Apple of Danville; two brothers, Henry Apple of Lebanon, Penn., and John Apple of Danville of Danville; and a granddaughter, Kenya Elliott of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Mary Christian
CHATHAM - Mary Rhabe Christian, 89, 1368 Moses Mill Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 8, 1909, in Mayodan, N.C., she was the daughter of Fredrick Robert Rhabe and Nora Lee Hemings Rhabe.
She was married
to Maurry Maddox Christian, who predeceased her.
She was of the Episcopal faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Sylvia C. Gillispie of Chatham; two brothers, Fred Rhabe Jr. of Arizona and Nick Rhabe of North Carolina; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Hillcrest Burial Park by the Rev. Frank Fuller.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1368 Moses Mill Road, Chatham.

Sudye Ellis
BRIDGEWATER - Sudye Landrum Ellis, 95, of Route 3, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 24, 1998, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
She was married
to Charles M. Ellis Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg.
Survivors include two sons, Macon Ellis Jr. of Bridgewater and Eldridge E. Finch of Staunton; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Allison B. Landrum of Bedford and William Hart Landrum of Luray.
Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. today at Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home by the Rev. L. Douglas Hill and the Rev. James M. John. Graveside services will be conducted 12 p.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park in Danville.
The family will receive friends following the funeral service.
Johnny Jones
Johnny William Jones, 65, 2310 Franklin Turnpike, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., after three years of declining health.
Born Jan. 19, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Samuel Price Jones and Jennie Hall Jones.
He was married
to Waynell Burke Cassidy Jones, who survives. He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Walker Jones.
A life long resident of the Danville area, he was engaged in the tire business until he retired.
He was a member of North Main Baptist Church and American Legion Post 325.
He was a veteran of the Korean War.
In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include three daughters, Teresa Jones Walker, Jennifer Jones Brumfield and Susan C. Faw, all of Danville; three sons, Johnny D. Jones, Victor S. Jones and Timothy Shawn Cassidy, all of Danville; two brothers, Malcolm P. Jones of Danville and Harvey Neal Jones of Staten Island, N.Y.; two sisters, Frances Jones Giezentanner of Ponca City, Okla., and Alice J. Wrenn of Boydton; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by twin grandsons.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, by Dr. Eddie Davis, the Rev. Kyle Flora and the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Oscar Martin
RINGGOLD - Oscar Martin, 82, 756 Cedar Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at the residence of his son.
He was born April 6, 1915, in Virginia.
He was married
to Elizabeth Burnett Martin, who predeceased him.
Survivors include three sons, Roger Martin of Phoenix, David Martin of Ringgold and John Martin of Danville; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Raymond Quick. Burial will be in Arbor Baptist Church cemetery.

Blanche 'Nanny' Richardson
Blanche Carr "Nanny" Richardson, 85, 764 Westridge Drive, died suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 29, 1912, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Willie Paul Carr and Rosa Bond Carr.
In 1930, she was married
to George Stewart Richardson, who died in 1957.
She worked as a bookkeeper in the family business, the Airport Supermarket, for many years. She later worked in the nursery at Memorial Hospital of Danville.
She attended Averett College and after the age of 60, received her CNA from Danville Community College.
At the time of her death, she was employed by Commonwealth Home Nursing as a sitter and CNA.
She was a life long member of Disabled American Veterans Archer T. Gammon Auxiliary, and she was also a member of Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janet Hamilton and Robert Hamilton, both of the residence; two granddaughters, Kathryn Whitney Hamilton of residence and Sherri Donahoe Francisco of Danville; a grandson, Daniel Stewart Hamilton of Harrisonburg; two great-grandsons, Austin Tyler Francisco and Joshua Taylor Francisco, both of Danville; three sisters, Lessie Setliff, Elise Slayton and Hallie Searcey, all of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Robert Hamilton. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.

Jeanette Ricketts
Grace "Jeanette" Burke Ricketts, 60, Stratford Health Care Center, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Stratford Health Care Center after 10 years of declining health and a year at the center.
Born June 6, 1937, in Helen, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Emily Carolynn Edwards and B.D. Burke, who survives.
On June 2, 1956, she was married
to John Daniel Ricketts, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
A resident of Newport News for most of her life, she had been a resident of Danville for the past seven years.
In addition to her father of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Connie Ricketts Heath of Hampton; two sons, Dennis Ray Ricketts of Newport News and Keith Wayne Ricketts of Dry Fork; two brothers, Roger D. Burke and Ronald E. Burke, both of Danville; a sister, Jeanelle B. Boaze of Virginia Beach; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Ross L. Range Sr. and the Rev. Daryl Joyce. Interment

Wilbert Scearce Sr.
DRY FORK - Funeral services for Wilbert Hoover Scearce Sr., 68, 557 Tunstall High Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. today by the Rev. Don Davidson at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
He died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, in the emergency room at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born June 14, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Walter T. Scearce and Elva Samuels Scearce.
On Oct. 24, 1951, he was married
to Annie Mae Patterson Scearce, who survives.
A resident of Pittsylvania County for most of his life, he retired in July of 1997 from Chatham Oil Company, where he worked at Express Mart, Airport, in the maintenance department.
He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict as a sergeant first class.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Wilbert "Buster" Scearce Jr. of Dry Fork and Tom Scearce of Danville; three daughters, Susan Pyron of Blanch, N.C., and Wendy Flinchum of Dry Fork and Wanda Ingram of Danville; a sister, Peggy Starling of Durham, N.C.; two daughters-in-law, Terri Scearce of Dry Fork and Monica Scearce of Danville; three sons-in-law, Gerald Pyron of Blanch, N.C., and Wesley Flinchum of Dry Fork and Randy Ingram of Danville; grandchildren, Michael Dodd, Bradley Flinchum, Shane Ingram, Travis Ingram, Lucas Scearce, Michael Holt, Kayla Scearce and Bethany Scearce; a great-grandchild, Madison Dodd; and a granddaughter-in-law, Melanie Dodd.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Carson T. Scearce and James Scearce; and a granddaughter, Katie Flinchum.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
George Soyars
CASCADE - Funeral services for George Allen Soyars, 71, 513 Huntington Trail, will be conducted 11 a.m. today at the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Thomas Wright and the Rev. Thomas Allgood. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
He died Monday afternoon, Feb. 23, 1998, at his residence after six months of declining health.
Born May 31, 1926, in the Cascade community of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Cove Allen Soyars and Lillian Soyars Soyars.
A lifelong resident of the Cascade community, he was a well-known farmer, cowboy and a well- known baseball player in the county.
He worked for the Santa Fe Pipe Line for a number of years before retiring in 1990.
He was a life time member of Cascade Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Anne Haley Soyars of the residence; three daughters, Sheila S. Martin, Tammy S. Wilson and Kimberly S. Hudson, all of Danville; a son, Ricky Allen Soyars of Danville; a sister, Loraine S. Harris of Cascade; three brothers, James W. Soyars, Burton Soyars and Bailey "Doc" Soyars, all of Cascade; and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Cody Allen Soyars.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Sheila Martin, 991 Moorefield Bridge Road, on State Road 863.
