Estelle Mayhew Bobbitt
Estelle Mayhew Bobbitt, 78, formerly of 411 Melrose Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after more than three years of declining health and 14 months in the nursing home.
Born June 13, 1919, in Gretna, she was a daughter of Charles Woody Mayhew and Elizabeth Rowland Mayhew.
On Nov. 23, 1936, she was married
to Riley Edward Bobbitt, who died in July 1975.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she had retired from No. 5 spinning room of Dan River, Inc., after 35 years of service.
She was a member of Melrose Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, B. Donald Bobbitt of Danville; a brother, Percy Ramsey Mayhew of Danville; five sisters, Mary Lemuel M. Eason, Clara M. Davis and Julia M. McGee, both of Danville, and Elsie M. Adams of Keeling and Gertie M. Neal of Chesapeake; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by two sons, Gene Randolph Bobbitt and Daryl Wayne Bobbitt; and three brothers, Rueben Mayhew, Thomas Mayhew and James Mayhew.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Charles Swanson and the Rev. Ronald Graham.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of her son, B. Donald Bobbitt, 167 Melrose Avenue, Danville.
Patsy Booth
Patsy Evans Booth, 52, 336 Cedarbrook Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, in an automobile accident.
Born Aug. 24, 1945, in Danville, she was a daughter of George Dewey Evans and Mary Elizabeth Evans Evans.
On Feb. 20, 1965, she was married
to Paul Edsel Booth, who also died on Feb. 26, 1998.
A life long resident of Caswell County, N.C., and Danville, she was employed by Health Tex for several years prior to being employed by Big Lots, where she was a sales clerk.
She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula Ann Tolley of Roanoke; five brothers, Hubert Evans and Edward Evans, both of Pelham, N.C., and Sam "Mike" Evans of Providence, N.C., and Carl Evans of Greensboro, N.C., and Kenneth Evans of Danville; three sisters, Vera E. Land and Nancy E. Layne, both of Pelham, and Edna E. Trammell of Gretna; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Kenneth Hall. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Paul Booth
Paul Edsel Booth, 58, 336 Cedarbrook Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, in an automobile accident.
Born March 10, 1939, in Danville, he was a son of the Annie Meadows Booth and Robert Thomas Booth, who survives.
On Feb. 20, 1965, he was married
to Patsy Evans Booth, who also died on Feb. 26, 1998.
A life long resident of Danville, he was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., where he worked as a store room manager.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He had served in the U.S. Air Force.
In addition to his father of Danville, survivors include a daughter, Paula Ann Tolley of Roanoke; a brother, Carl V. Booth of Danville; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Kenneth Hall. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Bertha Eastridge
AXTON - Bertha H. Bledsoe Eastridge, 78, 3731 Irisburg Road, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation Center.
Born Aug. 15, 1919, in Danville, she was a daughter of Mary Isabelle Quarter Bledsoe and William Turner Bledsoe.
She was married
to Ellis D. Eastridge, who survives.
She was a retired private duty nurse at Martinsville Convalescent.
She attended Word of Life Church in Axton.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Betty Thomas of Axton and Dorothy Taylor of Danville; a son, Randy R. Eastridge of Axton; two sisters, Ella Sigmon of Danville and Beulah Haynes of Axton; three brothers, Thomas Bledsoe of Danville, Jimmy Bledsoe of Eden, N.C., and Eugene Bledsoe of Richmond; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter and a brother.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Tomlinson Funeral Home Chapel in Ridgeway, by the Rev. Buford Collins, the Rev. Harry Vance and the Rev. Eugene Powell. Burial will be in Henry Memorial Park in Bassett.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Edith 'Eddie' Whitfield
HURT - Edith "Eddie" Motley Whitfield, 85, 8146 Blue Ridge Drive, died Wednesday night, Feb. 25, 1998, at her residence.
Born Dec. 22, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John B. Motley and Mary B. Easley Motley.
She was a homemaker and a member of Altavista Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors include three daughters, Lois Davis of Hurt and Ruth White and Lizzie Whitfield, both of the residence; two sisters, Mildred Fitzgerald of Chatham and Ruby Bradford of Newport News; two half sisters, Pollie Ann Motley of Danville and Eller Carter of Chatham; a half brother, John Motley of Danville; five grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Mararee Motley and Mary Motley; and two brothers, Garfield Motley and J.B. Motley.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Thomas Motley. Burial will be in New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery in Hurt.
Katie Brown
FOREST - Katie Virginia Brown Brown, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, after a long illness.
Born in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee Brown and Eva Harvey Brown.
She was married
for 44 years to Clinton Nelson Brown, who predeceased her.
Survivors include three daughters, Hilma Lacy and her husband, Robert, of Lynchburg, Linda North and her husband, Gary, of Forest and Nancy Bennett and her husband, Lynn, of Clemmons, N.C.; a son, Nelson Brown of Forest; three sisters, Elsie Davis and Marion Southern, both of Danville, and Gracie Robertson of Hampton; a brother, Harold Brown of Axton; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, Lynchburg, by Bishop Roger Young. Interment
will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg.

R. Robert Cadmus
FOLEY, Ala. - Rynier "Bob" Cadmus, 74, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at his residence.
Born March 27, 1923, in Bayonne, N.J., he was the son of Rynier and Olive Cadmus.
He was married
for 51 years to Natalie Zirkle Cadmus, who survives.
A veteran of World War II, he landed on Omaha Beach on D Day with the 747th Tank Battalion attached to the 29th Infantry Division.
On Sept. 11, 1944, he was the driver of the first tank to enter German soil at Winterspelt.
He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and American Service, Good Conduct and Victory medals.
For 18 years, he was the owner and operator of Bayville Boat Works and Dick's Landing in Bayville, N.J.
In addition to his wife, formerly of New Market, Va., survivors include three daughters, Shirley Cadmus of Milton, N.C., and Nancy Franklin of Houston and Betty Cadmus of Downingtown, Penn.; and a grandson.
The family will receive friends 2-4 today at the residence, 7470 Helton Drive, Foley.

Oscar Love
CHASE CITY - Oscar Daniel Love, 79, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at his residence.
He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force and a retired farmer.
He was first married
to Dorothy C. Love, who predeceased him. He was later married
to Thelma P. Love, who survives.
In addition to his wife of Chase City, survivors include three sons, Paul C. Love of Baskerville, John A. Love of Lynchburg and Phillip H. Love of Rustburg; two daughters, Ida C. Allgood of Boydton and Ruth L. Dillion of Danville; two stepsons, Keith Love of Fayetteville, N.C., and Leonard Love of Richmond; two stepdaughters, Jean L. Tharpe of Chase City and Kathleen L. Clark of Boydton; a sister, Nancy Hazelwood of Chase City; 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by two sons, Sam A. Love and Daniel B. Love.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Concord Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. David Blakely.

James Edward Lynch
RINGGOLD - James Edward Lynch, 71, 1253 Countryside Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, in his residence, following one year of declining health.
Born Oct. 31, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Reuben James Lynch and Fannie Hudgins Lynch.
On Sept. 18, 1947, he was married
to Mary Louise Barber Lynch, who died May 12, 1994.
He spent his entire life in Pittsylvania County, where he was a graduate of the former Whitmell Farm-Life School.
He retired as district manager from Independent Life & Accident Co., where he received numerous awards for outstanding service. He also had previously worked with the former Citizens Home Insurance Co.
He was a member of Glen Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and on the deacon board.
In 1964, he became a member of the Barber Shopper Quartet for several years.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by two sons, Rodney D. Lynch of Ringgold and Dave A. Lynch of Goochland; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Glen Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Wallace, the Rev. Gilmer Setliff and the Rev. Rodney Barker. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence, on State Route 730, off Route 726.

Buck Haskins
CHATHAM - Daniel Richard "Buck" Haskins, 80, of 4196 Banister Road, died Saturday evening, Feb. 28, 1998 at Riverside Health Care Center.
Born March 20, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son Charlie Hoskins and Mary Crews Hoskins. He was a retired farmer and a member of Salem Church of Christ.
He is survived by a sister, Villa Haskins Estes of Victoria.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 11 a.m. at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. C. Steve Crews and Rev. J. Haywood Alcorn.
The family received friends Sunday at Scott Funeral Home, and at other times will be at the residence of Sanford and Nancy Heath, 4196 Banister Road, Chatham.
