Everett Motley Sr.
Everett L. Motley Sr., of 130 Canterbury Road, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born May 2, 1909, in Chatham, he was a son of Mercer C. Motley Sr. and Effie Fuller Motley. A graduate of Danville public schools, he received his B.A. degree from Lynchburg College and later received his Master of Arts degree from Duke University.
He started teaching at the Brosville High School as a teacher and basketball coach. He served as a teacher at Clifton Forge High School before moving to Danville in 1936. After returning, he taught at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School and later G.W. High School. He served as principal at Bellevue Elementary School, Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, Robert E. Lee Junior High School and G.W. High School. Following retirement from the Danville public school system, he served as the principal of the Danville Christian Schools.
He was an active member in the Danville Kiwanis Club. He was a past president and served as Secretary Treasurer for 17 years. He received the Hixson Award (a Kiwanis International Award) for his service in the Kiwanis Club. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, a member of the official board and Sunday School teacher of Class 20.
He was married
on June 26, 1941, to Margaret Ferguson Motley, who survives. He is also survived by a son, E.L. Motley Jr., of Richmond, and a brother, Mercer C. Motley Jr., of Gatewood, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church by Rev. Jay Ashby. Burial will be at Mountain View cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, 7-9 p.m., at Townes Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence, 130 Canterbury Road.
J.C. Plowden Jr.
J.C. "Cliff" Plowden Jr., died Sunday, March 1, at 12:20 p.m. in the Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Greenville, S.C., a son of Jessie Clifton and Estelle Youngblood Plowden. He was educated in the Greenville Public School System and Furman University, where he earned a B.A. degree in 1948. He served in the United States Army 1945-1946. On October 9, 1948, he and Patricia Henson were married
in Greenville.
Mr. Plowden held a position of Public Accountant with the S.D. Leidesdorf and Co. Greenville, S.C., from 1948-1955. He held different positions in the textile industry including Spring Mills, Lancaster, S.C., Woodside Mills, Greenville, S.C., as Vice President and Secretary, Dan River Mills, Inc., both in Greenville and Danville as an Assistant Vice President and retired as Vice President and Controller.
The Plowdens moved to Danville in November 1982 with Dan River, retiring in 1986. Mr. Plowden was deeply interested in genealogy and did extensive research in family history publishing "Plowdens in History" (an overview of 800 years) copywritten in 1996. An active member of The First Baptist Church both in Danville and Greenville, he had served on the Boards of Deacons and in Greenville he served as Sunday School Superintendent.
He is survived by his wife Pat; three sons, David Wilson Plowden of West Union, S.C., Thomas Youngblood Plowden of North Augusta, S.C., John Edward Plowden of Greenville, S.C.; eight grandchildren; one brother, J.D. Plowden of Greenville, S.C.; and one sister, Gladys Plowden Kennedy of Due West, S.C.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, Danville. A similar service will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, Greenville, S.C. The family will receive friends at the churches at the conclusion of the services.

Annabel Smart
Annabel Hudson Smart, 86, of 112 Oakwood Circle, died Sunday morning, March 1, 1998 at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 3, 1911, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of William Frank Hudson and Elizabeth Wells Hudson. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan Smart Bradford, of Danville; a son, William Ray Smart of Blackstone; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Ernest Smart, who died in 1974.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Townes Memorial Chapel by Rev. Richard Cobb and Rev. Rebecca Yaw. Burial will be at Mountain View cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight 7-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home and at other times will be at the daughter's residence, 112 Oakwood Circle.
Annie Kate Hairston
Annie Kate Hairston, 79, 10773 Martinsville Highway, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at Stratford Health Care Center.
Born March 30, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Thomas Smith and Malissia Law Smith.
She was married
to Charlie Spencer Hairston, who predeceased her.
She was a retiree from American Furniture Company.
She is survived by a nephew, Roger Smith of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. John W. Tinsley. Burial will be in Silver Creek Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Norman Moss
Norman Wayne Moss, 62, formerly of the Vandola community, died Monday, March 2, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health since birth. He had been an invalid since birth.
Born Nov. 21, 1935, in Danville, he was the son of James Roy Moss and Mary Emma Gammon Moss.
A resident of Vandola Road for most of his life, he had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past two years.
He was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Moss Matherly of Vandola Road and Elga Moss Deboe of Cascade.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Westover Hills Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Cecil Coates and the Rev. Byron Jones. Burial will be in the Gammon Family cemetery on Vandola Road.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Barbara Matherly, 2573 Vandola Road.

Blanche Ricketts
Blanche Gilbert Ricketts, 80, 200 Major Court, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 21, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Grover Cleveland Gilbert and Ella Cox Gilbert.
She was first married
to Howard Samuel Mitchell, who was killed during World War II. On May 23, 1951, she was married
to Oscar Daniel Ricketts, who died Dec. 3, 1981.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She lived her early life in the Danville area and had also lived in the Washington, D.C., and southern Maryland areas prior to her retirement.
Survivors include two sisters, Nellie Lancaster of Danville and Arlene Netzer of Silver Spring, Md.; and two brothers, Jesse Gilbert of Virgilina and Jimmy Gilbert of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack Robertson.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Marie Barber
Marie Barber, 61, 165 Nelson Ave., died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 9, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Letcher Parsons and Eva Oakes Parsons.
On July 1, 1968, she was married
to Cecil E. Barber, who survives.
She was of the Baptist faith and was employed as a clerk in the dispatch office at Healthtex.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Bonnie S. Elliott of Dry Fork and Rhonda S. Barker and Susan D. Hardy, both of Danville, and Vickie A. Shelton of the residence; three sons, Johnny Ray Shelton and Brian K. Barber, both of Danville, and Michael D. Barber of Philadelphia; a sister, Faye Motley of Chatham; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Stephen K. Shelton; a sister, Frances Emerson; and a brother, Lawrence Parsons.
The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Doug Barber. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
Dorsey Bray
Dorsey Thomas Bray, 94, of King's Grant Retirement Community, died Tuesday night, March 3, 1998, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Feb. 14, 1904, in Henry County, he was the son of John Wesley Bray and Sarah Elizabeth Holcomb Bray.
He was married
to Ellen Shearin Bray, who predeceased him June 11, 1997.
Mr. Bray was educated in the Danville Public Schools. He worked in the furniture business for 55 years at Bledsoe Furniture and Clements and Parker Furniture.
He was a member of the Hosts Lions Club. He was a life long member of First Presbyterian Church of Danville, where he served as an elder and deacon.
Mr. Bray is survived by one son, Stuart W. Bray and his wife, Shirley B. Bray of Danville; a daughter, Dale B. Castiglione and her husband, Pete Castiglione of Danville; five grandchildren, Shearin M. Light and her husband, John P. Light. David W. Bray, Keith D. Bray, Anna Marie Castiglione and Peter A. Castigilone III.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 6, 1998, at 11 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn. Interment
will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends Thursday night 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his daughter, Dale B. Castiglione, 13 Chestnut Place.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church capital improvement fund.
Luke Reynolds
Luke Hill Reynolds, 92, 217 Hampton Drive, died Wednesday afternoon, March 4, 1998, at his residence.
Born April 12, 1905, in Callands, he was the son of Rufus Edward Reynolds and Myrtle Barbour Reynolds.
In 1937, he was married
to Myrtle Francis Reynolds, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Danville, where he was employed as a watch repairman for Kingoff Jewelry and later was employed with Hodnett and Speer for more than 20 years until he retired in 1969.
He was of the Christian faith.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Gordon Francis Reynolds Sr. of the residence; a sister, Rufus Myrtle Reynolds of the residence; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by Paul D. Reynolds Sr. and Silas B. Reynolds.
Graveside services will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. Wayne Crews.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the residence, 217 Hampton Drive.

Ada Thornton
Ada Cates Thornton, 103, of Roman Eagle Memorial Home, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at the home.
Born Dec. 9, 1894, in Durham County, N.C., she was the daughter of Andrew Cates and Nannie Couch Cates.
On Oct. 15, 1917, she was married
to James C. Thornton Jr., who died March 24, 1971.
She was a member of Second Baptist Church.
A resident of Danville for most of her life, she was a homemaker. She had been a resident at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past 10 years.
Survivors include a son, James C. Thornton III of Danville; two daughters, Lillian T. Hardy and Julia T. Carter, both of Danville; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Ann T. Winn.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. J.B. Baldridge.
