Christopher Myers

CHATHAM - Christopher White Myers, 1580 Banister Road, died Tuesday morning, March 10, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 27, 1996, in Pittsylvania County, he was the infant son of Cynthia Ann Myers and Christopher Coy White.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Donovan Myers of Chatham; a sister, Nancy White Myers of Chatham; his maternal grandfather, Clyde Myers of Washington, D.C.; his paternal grandmother, Elna White of Chatham; his maternal great-grandmother, Ora Myers of Chatham; and his paternal great-grandparents, Goode and Frances White of Chatham and Geraldine Richardson of Java.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Howerton Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Reginald Goods. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ronald Roe-CUSTOM

HOUSTON - Ronald W. Roe, 54, died in Houston on March 11, 1998, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

A native of Queens, N.Y., Ron distinguished himself in service to his country before beginning a successful career in the cable television industry, where his innovation and leadership contributed to a legacy of excellence in customer service.

After graduating from Montana State University, Ron became a captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1965 until 1969, where he received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in the Vietnam War.

In 1970, he began a career in cable television, where he set industry standards serving as vice president and general manager for cable systems in three states - Virginia, Connecticut, and Texas - as national customer operations director for TCI Corporate in Denver, Colo.

Early in his career, Ron made history as the first general manager to offer HBO and Ted Turner's TBS. He also opened the first movie rental and computer store in a local mall.

Career honors include: gubernatorial appointee and commissioner of the Virginia Telecommunications Council; president of Virginia Cable Television Association; president of Southern Cable Television Association; board member of Connecticut Cable Television Association; recipient of the Bill Daniels Manager of the Year Award in 1988; and manager of the United Artist System of the Year Award in 1990.

Ron Roe was a man of honor, integrity, dignity and perseverance. He will be remembered for his dedication to work and family. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

Ron is survived by his loving and devoted family that includes his wife, Linda Mumpower Roe and daughters, Angela Leigh Roe of Americus, Ga., and Heather Roe Thompson and her husband, Patrick, of Stockbridge, Ga.; his parents, Peter and Edith Roe of Commack, N.Y.; two sisters, Kathy Giles of Arlington, Texas, and Nancy Rapp of East Northport, N.Y.; and two brothers, Peter Roe of Dallas, and Michael Roe of Berwyn, Pa.

Ron's final resting place will be in Danville, Va. A prayer service will be held at the Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville on Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m.

In celebration of Ron's life, a funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 14, at noon at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A burial with military honors by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 will be in Mountain View cemetery.

A scholarship fund has been established in Ron's memory. Contributions can be sent to the Ron Roe Memorial Scholarship Fund, Montana State University Foundation, 1501 South 11th Ave., Bozeman, Mont., 59717.

Mary Scearce

Mary Oakes Custer Scearce, 71, 227 Baugh Street, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, in her residence, following one year of declining health.

Born Dec. 6, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Joseph Green Oakes and Mary Woodson Oakes.

She was married to Ashby M. Custer, who predeceased her.

She spent her entire life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas, where she was a homemaker. She was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include five sons, Garrett Custer and Larry Custer, both of Danville, David Custer of Chatham, Jerry Custer of Blairs, and Clyde Thomas Scearce Jr. of Lynchburg; three daughters, Susie C. Adkins of Blairs, Arline C. Scearce of Cascade and Margaret "Tiny" C. Brumfield of Dry Fork; two sisters, Gertrude Oakes Banes of Clover and Ruby Oakes Hammock of Danville; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Richard Wayne Custer.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Steven Greer and the Rev. James Albert. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Katie Stephens

LARGO, MD. - Katie Maude Stephens, 93, 817 New Orchid Place, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, in Manor Care Nursing Home.

Born July 24, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John and Annie Waldren.

She was married to Claude Stephens, who predeceased her.

Survivors include three sons, John Stephens of Largo, James Stephens of Greensboro, N.C., and Claude Stephens Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Margaret Pipkin of Baltimore; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from Camp Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. George H. Pass. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Geraldine Stephens, 240 Jordan Street, Danville.

Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie Childress

JAVA - Charlie Childress, 87, of Java, died Wednesday night, March 11, 1998, in the Gretna Health Care Center.

Born June 11, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Tom Childress and Teach Childress.

He was a farmer and a member of the Riceville Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Charles White of Salisbury, N.C., Les Barley of Java and James Hamm of Gretna; and one daughter, Jeanetta Grasty of Java.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Roxie Ann Butler; four brothers, Mack Childress, William Childress, Willie Childress and Richard Childress; and three sisters, Lora Childress, Cora Childress and Pearl Childress.

A funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday from the Riceville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Walker with burial in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of a granddaughter, Lois Grasty, on state road 2888 in Java.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Dexter Holley

A funeral for Dexter L. Holley, 39, 6573 Irish Rd., Chatham, will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Bill Motley and the Rev. Roger Collins. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He died Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at his home.

Born June 18, 1958, in Danville, he was a son of Henry Morris Holley and Naomi Herndon Holley, who survives.

He was a member of Abundant Life World Outreach Church and worked as an equipment operator at Laramore Construction and Roy Ford Construction.

In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include his fiancee, Sharon King of Chatham; three sisters, Sandra H. Yeatts of Altavista, Donna H. McGhee of Martinsville, and Bonita H. Dodd of Dry Fork; and two brothers, Thomas Ray Holley and Terry Lynn Holly, both of Chatham.

The family will receive friends 3-4 p.m. today at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church and

other times at the residence.

Queen Jones

Queen Elizabeth Pinchback Jones, 86, of 182 Graymont Place, died Wednesday, March 11, 1198, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 26, 1911, in Danville, she was the daughter of Jerry Pinchback and Emma Henderson Pinchback. She was married to Alvis F. Jones, who predeceased her.

She was owner of Queenie's Beauty Shop.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Jones of Danville; three sisters, Bernyce Oliver, Ada P. Lee and Juanita Drake, all of Danville; and two brothers, Warner Pinchback and Charle Pinchback, both of Danville.

A funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. today at Trinity Baptist Church by the Rev. Brandon Smith. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

"Sandy" Saunders

Elven "Sandy" Saunders, 61, of 1528 Fall Creek Road, Ringgold, died at 11:55 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 1998, at his residence.

Born July 21, 1936, in New Brunswick, N.J., he was the son of Elven Lindsey Saunders and Barbara Cop Saunders.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and Elks Lodge in New Jersey, and also a former member of the American Legion in Metuchen, N.J. He had served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army.

He had lived in the Danville area since 1986.

He was married to Elizabeth Majaros Saunders on May 20, 1967.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Debra S. Plymale of Richmond; and three sisters, Dorothy S. Ignacki of Chatham, and Joan S. Thurman and Clara S. Charmello, both of Danville.

A funeral mass will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father David V. McGuire.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Clifton Turner

Clifton Henry Turner, 72, of 125 Wildflower Road, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 23, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Lewis Turner and Sally Leftwich Turner.

He was married to Carrie Dickerson Turner, who survives.

He was a self-employed carpenter most of his life.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include one brother, Preston Turner of Dry Fork.

A funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. today at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home by the Rev. Harold Vann II. Burial will follow in the Dickersom family cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the resident.

Duane Arnold

Duane Kevin Arnold, 32, of 549 Parker Road, Danville, died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 17, 1965, in Danville, he was the son of Garnett "Leon" Arnold, who survives, and Patricia Robinette Arnold.

He was a construction worker and of the Baptist faith.

Hwas married to Bonnie Hyler, who survives.

In addition to his wife and father of the residence, survivors include two sons, Kevin Leon Arnold and Joshua Nathaniel Arnold, both of the residence; a paternal grandmother, Mary Martin Arnold of Danville; and two brothers, Wesley Worley of Lawrenceville and Timothy Arnold of Danville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Duane Blivens. Internment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of his father, 549 Parker Rd.

Roxie Gibson

Roxie Shorter Gibson, 74, of 2077 Kentuck Road, Danville, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at Brian Center in Yanceyville, N.C., after three years of declining health.

Born Oct. 29, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Lewis Shorter and Lila Mitchell Shorter. She had lived her entire life in Pittsylvania County and was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was married to James A. Gibson, Sr., who survives.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, James A. Gibson Jr., of the residence, Steve Gibson of Callands, and Michael Gibson of Nashville, N.C.; a daughter, Linda G. Martin of Savannah, Ga.; two sisters, Janice Austin and Bernice McCubbins, both of Danville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Howard C. Green. The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times will be at the residence, 2077 Kentuck Road.

Charles Heldreth

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Charles Alvin Heldreth, 71, of 36th Ave. North, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at his residence.

Born March 5, 1927, in Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of Herman Moore and Ollie Gay Vaught Heldreth. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific and after the war attended Bluefield College. He spent most of his life working in the office machines industry, where he was part-owner of Southern Office Machines Company in Danville, Va., for 20 years and later owner of Coastal Business Machines, Inc., in Myrtle Beach until his retirement. He was a member of St. Philips Lutheran Church.

He was married to Betty Blanch Blume Heldreth, who survives.

In addition to his wife of Myrtle Beach, survivors include two sons, Larry A. Heldreth and Michael E. Heldreth, both of Dry Fork, Va.; a daughter, Laura Lynn Sawyer of Conway, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Philips Lutheran Church with Pastor Dennis Setzer officiating. Burial will follow in Ocean Woods Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the residence.

McMillan-Small Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
